Is Your Heart in It? Matthew 18:21 28, 32 33 Background Scripture: Matthew 18:21 35 Lesson 1 07.01.18 Then came Peter to to him, and said, Lord, how oft oft shall my my brother sin sin against against me, me, and and I forgive I forgive him? him? till seven till seven times? times? 22 22 Jesus saith unto him, I I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? Then Peter came and said to him, Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times? 22 Jesus said to him, Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times. 23 For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; 25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything. 27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay what you owe. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you? The Art of Forgiving Before we can begin to exercise forgiveness, we need to understand its importance, its requirement for all Christians, and what must take place for it to happen. In today s lesson, Jesus teaches His disciples a valuable lesson on forgiveness. He uses the illustration of a man who owes his master an enormous amount of money but has no means to repay this debt. Jesus had just finished teaching on loving one s neighbor when Peter asked: How often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive? Until seven times? Jesus answer must have startled Peter and the other disciples: Not seven times, but seventy times seven. In order for true forgiveness to take place, the heart must be in it. Our hearts must first be willing to forgive. In His illustration to His disciples, Jesus pointed out that there should not be a limit to how many times we forgive. The slave owed a large sum of money to the king. Knowing he did not have the money, he asked for more time to repay. The importance here is not the size of the debt, but the size of one s heart and its capacity to express compassion. The king showed compassion and mercy to the slave and forgave his debt entirely. However, the slave did not respond in the same manner to the man who owed him money. He chose to hold on to another man s debt and demanded payment. Because the man was unable to pay, he was thrown in prison until he could pay back what he owed. Because he had been forgiven, the forgiven slave should have inspired to have compassion, mercy, and grace for his debtor instead of vindication. The Benefits of Forgiving We forgive because it is the right thing to do for those who have wronged us, and also because it benefits us. Forgiving others means we don t carry around the heavy load of anger, frustration, and evil thoughts. When we hold animosity against another, we often feel worse than the person who wronged us. They Exactly what does it mean to forgive? Who says that I have to do it, and why? Why do I always have to be the first one to forgive? 6 Third Quarter 2018 Teen Scene

may no longer even remember the situation that caused you to be angry and are going on happily with their everyday lives. When we let go of unforgiveness and stop looking for ways to vindicate ourselves, God is pleased, and we too are forgiven. Remember, in Mark 11:25, it specifically says, And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any; that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Jesus expects us to be forgiving, yet it is not a commandment. However, if we choose not to forgive others, our heavenly Father will not forgive us. So, let s forgive and enjoy the blessings of God. This story reminds us of Jesus, our King, who like the king in this story, extends to all equally compassion, mercy, and grace. Jesus is the perfect picture of forgiveness, and when Christians follow His instructions, we can acquire the art of forgiving as well. What does a promise gone wrong do for us? In this parable (story), Jesus is sharing with Peter, the man had no way to pay back his creditor. He simply petitioned for forgiveness of the loan; He fell to his knees before him. Be patient with me, he begged, and I will pay you back everything. (Matthew 18:26, NIV). The creditor had compassion on him, and forgave him, and yes! Canceled the debt altogether! This is something Jesus exercised often which is an example of how we are to respond. This could have been a very happy ending, but wouldn t you know it, the debtor also knew someone who was in his exact same shoes, which now made him the creditor. When the debtor made petition to him, he expressed no mercy, assaulted him, and threw him in prison. Now that was no way to repay the forgiveness he had recently received. When others got word of this mans merciless act toward his debtor, and shared with his master/creditor, in his anger, the master handed the original debtor over to the jailers to be tortured. The Experience of a Forgiveness Episode We often get upset and form negative opinions, positioning ourselves to attack others both verbally or physically. Instead of a negative response, look to Jesus example and have compassion and mercy which will always lead to forgiveness. Pray regularly that God will create in you a loving heart that remains ready to forgive. Is it important for me to forgive someone who has not or will not forgive me? What do I do if someone doesn t forgive me when I ask to be forgiven? Teen Scene Third Quarter 2018 7

Jesse and Joe were chosen as co-chairs of a church program. They had worked together briefly before. But this time they shared an assignment that would be pretty significant as it affected the entire congregation. Their management styles were very different. Jesse liked to meet frequently and ask lots of questions. Joe enjoyed receiving the assignment, pointing out best practices of similar programs, and developing an approach for an improved program, then bringing it to the team for a combined review. Both strategies are acceptable, but neither Jesse or Joe seemed happy working together. With this in mind, they both began to work more with the individuals on the team who were more inclined to work with them. So, instead of having one team, they actually had two. This was very disheartening to the people on the team and confusing to the congregation. Realizing the situation, Jesse made the decision to yield to Joe s leadership. He took the high Has God forgiven me for the wrong I ve done in my life? How can I tell? road and shared with the pastor that pairing them had brought about an appearance of strife. The leader accepted Jesse s resignation and left it to Joe to move forward with the program. Jesse requested the leader bring he and Joe together, and explain what was being attempted. Jesse apologized to Joe for all the confusion and unfair appearance to the team and congregation, and asked for forgiveness. Joe smiled and accepted his apology. Jesse agreed to assist, in any capacity that was needed for the success of the program.
