KNOW THE MASS, ONE ONE WORD AT A TIME KNOW THE MASS, ONE ONE WORD AT A TIME Invoke Invocar Just before the priest pronounces the words of consecration over the bread and wine, he invokes the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to come upon the gifts. "Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall." This invocation envisions the Spirit transforming the gifts of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. At the same time, because we bring ourselves to Mass to give ourselves over to the Lord in our selfgift, the prayer also invokes the Holy Spirit to come upon us and transform us as well into the Body of Christ. The double invocation of the Holy Spirit on bread and wine and on us and the double transformation of both into the Body of Christ show us the power of God at work in our worship. Far from a common gathering of like-minded people or friends, our celebration of Mass is an extraordinary experience. In today;s feast of Corpus Christi, we celebrate that Jesus feeds us today with his Body and Blood. Have I truly appreciated this sustaining and life-giving presence of the Lord in my life as an unfailing resource? TIFF (LZW ) decompressor Body and Blood of Jesus Christ Celebrating the Real Presence The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ reflects the Church"s developing understanding of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Origi nally called the Feast of Corpus Christi, this celebration grew out of a controversy in the Middle Ages over the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Some made the claim that Christ was physically present in such a way that the consecrated Host became human flesh. Others said Christ was present in the Eucharist only in a spiritual way. The Feast of Corpus Christi, established throughout the Church in 1264, proclaims faith in the full yet mysterious Eucharistic presence of Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas, author of Liturgy for the Feast, argued that we know Christ is fully present in the Eucharist by faith, not by our senses or by human understanding alone. Traditional Corpus Christi celebrations included Eucharistic processions, Benediction and the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Today, the feast is known as the Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. Vatican Council II emphasized the importance of the Eucharist as a communal liturgical celebration, but also reaffirmed the Church s teaching about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Since the Council, the popes have urged a continued devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Lord Jesus Christ, we worship You living among us in the Sacrament of Your Body and Blood. May we offer to our Father in heaven a solemn pledge of undivided love. May we offer to our brothers and sisters a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom where You live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and Ever. Amen
