UNIT 27 Session 5 Use Week of: Jesus Ascended to Heaven BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 1:4-14 MAIN POINT: Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. KEY PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 15:4 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. INTRODUCE THE STORY (15 20 MINUTES) PAGE 146 TELL THE STORY (10 15 MINUTES) PAGE 148 EXPERIENCE THE STORY (20 25 MINUTES) PAGE 150 Leader BIBLE STUDY 5 After Jesus crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus showed His followers that He is alive. He taught them about Himself and about God s kingdom. (Luke 24:25-27,44-48) Jesus told them that He would soon return to the Father. (John 20:17) Jesus directed the Eleven to go a mountain. When they arrived, Jesus appeared. Some of them wondered if Jesus was finally going to overthrow the Roman government and set up His kingdom on earth. Jesus said, It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive 142 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 27 Session 5

power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:7-8). Jesus told them to remain in Jerusalem until they received the Father s promise the Holy Spirit. Those who repented of their sins and trusted in Jesus death and resurrection would be baptized by the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:5) The Holy Spirit would give them power to live holy lives and take the gospel to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8) After Jesus told the disciples these things, Jesus was taken up into the sky right in front of their eyes! (Acts 1:9) Suddenly two men stood on the mountain next to the disciples. Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? they asked. They said Jesus would return the same way. (Acts 1:11) Jesus is alive in heaven, waiting to return for His people. Jesus told the disciples He was going to prepare a place for them, and when we die, we will be with the Lord. (John 14:1-3) In the meantime, Jesus has not left us alone. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us and help us do God s work. One day Jesus will return to make all things new and to rule as Lord over all. 5 Additional resources for each session are available at gospelproject.com. The BIBLE STORY Bible Storytelling Tips Demonstrate the story: Print the Bible story picture onto heavyweight paper. Cut out Jesus, His friends, and clouds. Laminate the figures or cover with clear contact plastic. Place strips of double stick tape on the back of each figure for easy attachment and removal. Affix the images to a firm surface as they are mentioned in the story. Sit on a cloud: Gather white sheets, blankets, and pillows. Arrange materials in the Bible story area to resemble a large cloud. Scatter quilt batting or cotton balls throughout the cloud. Invite preschoolers to gather on a cloud to hear the Bible story. Jesus Ascended to Heaven Acts 1:4-14 Forty days had passed since Jesus rose from the dead. He had spent time with His friends. He had eaten with them and given them a very important mission. Jesus friends were back in the city of Jerusalem. Jesus told His friends not to leave the city, but to wait. God was going to send the Holy Spirit. Jesus reminded the disciples about John the Baptist. John the Baptist baptized people with water. Jesus said, In just a few days, you will be baptized too not with water, but with the Holy Spirit. When Jesus and all His friends were together, His friends asked, Lord, are You giving the kingdom back to Israel now? His friends still did not understand. God s kingdom is so much bigger than Israel. Jesus said, That is not for you to know, but you will get power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. You will tell people about Me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Jesus knew His friends could not do God s work on their own. The friends needed the Holy Spirit s power so they could tell people all across the world about Jesus. Then something amazing happened! Jesus friends saw Jesus go up into the sky! A cloud took Him out of their sight. As the disciples looked into the sky, two men in white clothes stood beside them. The men said, Why are you staring up into the sky? Jesus has been taken into heaven. One day, He will come back again in the same way. 144 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 27 Session 5

Introduce THE STORY SESSION TITLE: Jesus Ascended to Heaven BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 1:4-14 MAIN POINT: Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. KEY PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 15:4 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. The Glory song offering basket Allergy Alert download favorite toys related to the Bible story theme Shadow Matching activity page, 1 per child pencils or crayons LOW PREP blocks people figures (optional) transportation toys (optional) Welcome time Play the unit theme song in the background as you greet preschoolers and follow your church s security procedures. Set an offering basket near the door to collect at an appropriate time. Post an allergy alert, if necessary. Set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity page Guide preschoolers to draw a line from each cloud to its matching shadow. SAY Jesus returned to heaven. Jesus friends saw Jesus go up into the sky, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. Build a city Encourage preschoolers to use blocks to build a city. Set out people figures and transportation toys as well if available. SAY In today s Bible story, Jesus friends were back in the city of Jerusalem. Forty days had passed since Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus had spent time with His friends and given them a very important mission. Jesus told His friends not to leave the city, but to wait. God was going to send the Holy Spirit. 146 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 27 Session 5

Experiment with power Before the session, cut a string of Christmas lights into sets of two bulbs. Throw away the plug. Trim about one centimeter of the plastic wire casing off the ends of each set by gently cutting through the plastic and leaving the wire intact. Set out the sets of lights and several 9-volt batteries. Explain to preschoolers that they will use the batteries and lights to make the lights turn on. Allow time for preschoolers to experiment before showing them what to do. Then demonstrate how to touch one wire to one battery prong and the other wire to the other prong to make the bulbs light up. Make sure preschoolers do not leave lights on so long that they get hot. SAY These lights were made to glow for people to enjoy, but the lights need power to glow. These batteries gave the lights the power they needed. Jesus gave His friends a mission: to tell all people in all places about Him. The friends could not do this on their own. They needed God s power to do their mission. In today s Bible story, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to help His friend accomplish the mission He gave them. Transition to tell the story To gain the attention of all the preschoolers to move them to Bible study, show the countdown video, flip off the lights, or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Invite preschoolers to walk powerfully to Bible study. They may make strong arms, puff out their chest, or take big, purposeful steps. string of inexpensive Christmas lights (not LED) scissors or wire cutters 9-volt batteries countdown video (optional) Jesus the Risen King 147

Bible bookmark Jesus Ascended to Heaven video Bible Story Picture Poster Main Point Poster Giant Timeline or Big Story Circle Introduce the Bible story Gather non-functioning toddler toys in need of new batteries from a younger classroom. Show preschoolers how the toys function with the addition with new batteries. SAY These toys remind me of today s Bible story. The toys need battery power to work. In today s Bible story, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to give His friends power to complete the mission He gave them. Watch or tell the Bible story Place a bookmark at Acts 1 in your Bible. Invite a preschooler to open it. Reverently display the open Bible. SAY God talks to us through the Bible because the Bible is God s Word. Everything God says is true! Today s Bible story comes from the Book of Acts. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling tips. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. Talk about the Bible story SAY Jesus told His friends to wait in Jerusalem for God to send the Holy Spirit. The friends needed the Holy Spirit s power to do the mission Jesus gave them. 148 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 27 Session 5

Then Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. One day, Jesus will come back again in the same way. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline or big story circle as you ask the following review questions: 1. For whom did Jesus tell His friends to wait? (the Holy Spirit) 2. What would the Holy Spirit give to the friends? (power to tell people all across the world about Jesus) 3. Where did Jesus go after speaking to His friends? (into the sky in a cloud) 4. What did the two men in white clothes say about Jesus? (He had been taken into heaven and would come back again one day in the same way.) Learn the big picture question SAY Our big picture question is, What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. God gives the Holy Spirit to His people. The Holy Spirit helps us complete our mission of telling others about Jesus while we wait for Him to come back and make everything new. Practice the key passage Open your Bible to 1 Corinthians 15:4. Read the key passage aloud several times. Sing together the key passage song, He Was Raised. SAY Our key passage tells us that Jesus came back to life on the third day just like God said He would do. One day Jesus will come back to earth and make everything new just like He promised. When the music stops, the preschooler holding the crown gets to ask the big picture question while the rest of the group responds with the answer. SAY Jesus friends thought Jesus might sit on a throne as the King of Israel, like King David or King Solomon. Jesus is King, but God s kingdom is so much bigger than Israel. What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. One day Jesus will come back as King over everything, but until then the Holy Spirit helps us do God s work on earth. today s Bible story, Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. Jesus left earth and returned to heaven, but He did not leave us alone. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us do God s work on earth while we wait for Jesus to come back and make everything new. Create a cloud viewer Print a Cloud Viewer printable on heavyweight paper for each preschooler. Fold the paper along the middle. Use scissors to cut out the center of each half using the dotted lines as a guide. Show a preschooler how to place a craft stick in the bottom center of the viewer between the top and bottom layers. Secure the handle and sides with tape. Offer stickers for preschoolers to decorate their viewers. Lead preschoolers outside or to a window. Point out different types of clouds in the sky. Demonstrate how to hold the viewer toward the sky and compare clouds to the pictures on the viewer. SAY What types of clouds are in the sky today? In today s Bible story, we learned that Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. Jesus did not leave His friends alone though. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would help Jesus friends do the mission He gave them. Just like we have the same mission as Jesus friends, God also gives us the Holy Spirit to help us do our mission. Roll a preschooler s completed message and tie it to the ribbon of a helium-filled balloon. Lead preschoolers outside to a safe, open area. Pray for the people who will receive the good news balloons. Release the balloons and watch them float away. SAY Jesus friends watched Jesus go up into the sky until He was out of sight like we watched our balloons. Jesus went up to heaven in a cloud. One day, Jesus will come again and make everything new. Until Jesus comes back, we have a job to do: Tell everyone that Jesus died on the cross and rose again to rescue people from sin.
