More than a cult of the Arts, Hay Festival stands as an ode to freedom, an homage to intelligence and a tribute to the creativity of human minds. Revista Semana

HAY FESTIVAL Cartagena de Indias, since 2006 "Hay is a Renaissance-style festival focused on solving humanity's problems through literature, science and philosophy while Davos is a more technocratic affair," said Mauricio Rodriguez Munera, Colombia's former ambassador to Britain. "Hay is a richer experience and perhaps a more lasting one." "Of course the real power is in Davos" said El País editor Javier Moreno, who has attended both events in the past. "But in Hay, as in a good newspaper, you have the sense of a nation in dialogue with itself. Davos is all about capitalism in dialogue with itself." Over the long term, he said, the ideas expressed at Hay may prove more influential.

HAY FESTIVAL CARTAGENA 2016: some numbers Audience of 55.000 (events in Cartagena, Riohacha and Medellín), including 800 children 150 guests from 19 countries 25% of the audience had free access to the events 144 events in 4 cities (Cartagena, Medellín, Riohacha and Bogotá) Events in 6 municipalities from Bolívar, La Guajira and Magdalena 34 venues 400 journalists 600 trees of native species where planted after the festival to offset its carbon foot print

HAY FESTIVAL CARTAGENA: kids events and community work Hay Festivalito Comunitario is the children and young adults programme that we run together with the NGO Plan International. The events are organised at community centres of the barrios (deprived areas on the outskirts of Cartagena). The programme of events during festival days is the culmination of a year round work done with the children and their families. We run a reading skills programme called Crecer Leyendo (Reading whilst growing) that has benefited more than 15.000 children from the barrios since 2010. We have a dedicated programme for university students (Hay Joven) and give away 20% of available tickets free to students. We also work with SENA, a government training programme for adults, organising tailored event for them

THE 39 PROJECT: Bogotá, Beirut, Port Harcourt As one of the leading literature festivals in the world, Hay Festival has always been always been interested in highlighting and promoting new literary talent, and to this end, has collaborated with the UNESCO World Book Capital project so far in Bogotá, Beirut and Port Harcourt. The 39 Project consists of the selection of 39 writers under the age of 40 who have the potential and the talent to define the trends that will mark the future development of literature in a certain language or region. The Project materialized for the first time in Bogotá (2007), the second time in Beirut (2010), and most recently for the third time in Port Harcourt (2014). In both Bogota and Beirut, dedicated festivals were held to celebrate the project, and in Port Harcourt, the selected writers were invited to the Port Harcourt Book Festival for four days of literature, conversation and the love of books.

Selection of the 39 writers For Bogotá39, Beirut39, and Africa39, the selection of the 39 writers was made following these criteria: The writers were chosen by a panel of well known judges. The selected writers had to be under the age of forty. The selected authors needed to have at least one work published and show a potential for development. Publishers, literary agents and critics from all over the world are consulted to create the longlist of authors.
