S E I R E S N O SERM with Rev. Gregory Seltz Sharing the Savior s Unchanging Message of HOPE in a Changing World

SESSION FIVE: Today s the Day for God s Grace for All POMPEII Opening Prayer: Lord God, heavenly Father, we get so preoccupied with the day to day details of our lives that we often forget to step back and consider the eternity that stretches out before us all when this life ends. Guide our discussion of that future, that we may apply our hearts to Your wisdom and to faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. We pray in His holy name. Amen. Gone in an Instant Pastor Seltz said, In an instant you can hear a cancer diagnosis that changes your life. In an instant, you can receive relationship news that is absolutely heartbreaking. In an instant, someone you love can suddenly die. Just like the citizens of Pompeii, we don t know what might happen in an instant from now. What might happen in your life? Describe an event in your life that instantly changed everything. Were there any warning signs that you didn t recognize until afterwards? What would you have done differently if you would have had prior warning? Warning Signs Sometimes huge disasters and life changes come on us completely out of the blue with no warning. But often God gives us subtle warning signs we don t notice. That s what happened to the citizens of Pompeii. Seventeen years before Vesuvius blew, the region was struck by a major earthquake; Pompeii suffered significant damage. Minor tremors and smaller earthquakes continued throughout the following seventeen years. The final warning occurred four days before the eruption as small earthquakes began striking the region. Each passing day they grew more frequent. But with no knowledge of the link between volcanoes and earth tremors, the citizens of Pompeii failed to recognize the volcano was awakening. The catastrophic eruption finally struck on August 24, 79 AD. But even then there was still time to flee from Pompeii. That morning little fissures appeared on the volcano and a small amount of ash and smoke was released. Around 1:00 p.m. the massive explosion occurred, hurling a huge column of dust, ash, and pumice miles into the air. Many fled, but others took shelter in their homes. It wasn t until around midnight that the fatal pyroclastic flow came roaring down the mountainside. Discuss the kinds of natural disasters that give little or no warning to victims. Which natural disasters give plenty of warning but people become so accustomed they fail to heed them? Jesus taught His disciples that God would give us warning signs to remind us Judgment Day is drawing near. Read Matthew 24:1-8 1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when His disciples came to point out to Him the buildings of the temple. 2 But He answered them, You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

3 As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the close of the age? 4 And Jesus answered them, See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, I am the Christ, and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. Discuss how war, famine and earthquakes clearly show how fragile we are and how quickly our life can end. What experiences in your life have made you realize your earthly life will not continue forever? What can you say to try to awaken your family, friends, and neighbors who have grown accustomed to ignoring the warning signs all around them? What would you say to someone who asks you what they must do to be ready for Jesus return? Temporal Vs. Eternal It is easy for us to become engrossed in the here and now of our short earthly lives, and forget that eternity stretches out beyond us. Paul urges us to constantly be mindful of our heavenly, eternal life which Jesus Christ has won for us by His life, death, and resurrection. Read Colossians 3:1-10 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. What other earthly attachments would you add to the list Paul gives us beginning in verse 5? How does setting our minds on heavenly things also help us through the unexpected changes in our earthly life (lost jobs, health crises, death of loved ones)? Brief Lives Our youth is often like the early part of a game in sports. Until we are down to the last minutes or outs of a game we don t feel any real urgency. Then suddenly every play becomes extremely important. Before we are in those last minutes, James reminds us how brief our earthly life really is. Read James 4:13-15

13 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that. King David picks up this same theme in Psalm 39, Read Psalm 39:4-7 4 O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! 5 Behold, You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! 6 Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! 7 And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. How comfortable are you facing the fact that one day you will die? Stop to think that in the end you will stand face to face with your Judge, Jesus Christ. How does that make Him rise above all other things as your only Hope? How does contemplating death and judgment change your priorities in this life? How does it affect your relationships with the people God has brought into your life? What Lies Beyond? The Bible makes clear that all people will be raised at Christ s return and stand before His judgment throne no exceptions. Read Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46 31 When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 Before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And He will place the sheep on His right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 41 Then He will say to those on His left, Depart from, Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Not a single one of us will escape His return, each of us must stand before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ and receive His verdict of eternal life or eternal punishment. This is why it is so urgent for us to consider the end of our earthly life and look to Jesus Christ as our Savior. When we know we are safe in Him, He fills us with love and the urgency to share that same warning and gracious offer of salvation with each person He brings into our lives. What are some reasons we might hesitate to share Jesus salvation with people in our lives? Name someone who unexpectedly disappeared from your life leaving you no further opportunity to share God s love and forgiveness. Why is it urgent that we not wait to share the message of Jesus with our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers?

For those who put their trust in Jesus Christ and His salvation, a great and glorious future awaits. Read Revelation 7:14-17; 21:3-5a 7:14 And he said to me, These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will shelter them with His presence. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. 5 And He who was seated on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new. Which of these promises is most meaningful to you? Why? CLOSING PRAYER: Holy Father, thank You for providing a way of salvation through faith in Your Son Jesus Christ. Impress upon me how short my life really is, that I may recognize the urgency of sharing Your great salvation with everyone in my life before it is too late. I pray in Jesus holy name. Amen. with Rev. Gregory Seltz 800-876-9880 WWW.THELUTHERANHOUR.ORG
