The Office of the Chaplain and the School of Music Present An Order for Compline Bel Canto Dr. Nicholle Andrews, Director of Choral Studies Dr. Joseph Modica, Associate Professor of Choral Music Philip Hoch 16 18, organ Hyunju Hwang, organ Sunday, March 11, 2018, 7:30 p.m. Memorial Chapel

The Office of Compline is rooted in the daily cycle of prayer observed by the early Christian monastic communities. By the 6th century, St. Benedict had codified the rule for his followers, setting forth a formula for the recitation of psalms, hymns, prayers, and readings seven times a day. Compline was the final prayer hour before retiring for the evening. The service incorporates plainsong and diverse choral styles and genres creating thus a unique blend of new and older musical traditions. As was customary in medieval chapels, Compline is offered by candlelight and much of the music is unaccompanied. The unifying thread throughout the Compline service is quiet meditation and reflection led and inspired by music.

The Order for Compline PREPARATION Prelude No. 2 from Three Liturgical Preludes George Oldroyd (1887-1956) Philip Hoch, organ Anthem The Dawn is not Distant Christine Donkin (b. 1976) Look at the Heavens and count the stars. The Dawn is not distant, nor is the night starless. Bel Canto Anna Forgét, soloist The Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end. Brethern, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist, steadfast in the faith. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. 1 Peter 5.8,9 Thanks be to God But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Thanks be to God Anthem: Ohtul Pärt Uusberg (b. 1986) The little bird grows silent as the wind blows. The small flower falls asleep caressed by the dew. Twilight blushed as she kisses the night. The forest trees sleep in memory and silence, They are wistful for my song, now a silent memory, as it paddles far away.

Officiate and Almighty God, our heavenly Father: We have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. For the sake of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us all our offenses; and grant that we may serve you in the newness of life, to the glory of your Name. May the Almighty God grant us forgiveness of all our sins, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Before the ending of the day. Creator of the world we pray, That with thy wonted favor thou wouldst be our guard and keeper now. From all ill dreams defend our eyes, from nightly fears and fantasies; tread under foot our ghostly foe, that no pollution we may know. O Father, that we ask be done, Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son; Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee, doth live and reign eternally. Anthem O Frondens Virga Drew Collins (b. 1975) O verdant branch, Based on a chant by Hildegard von Bingen standing in your nobility as dawn advances: now rejoice and be glad and deem us, helpless ones, worthy of freeing us from evil habits and even stretch forth Your hand to lift us up. THE WORD OF GOD Psalm 31.1-6 Have mercy upon me, O God, and hearken unto my prayer. 1. In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: Let me never be put to confusion, deliver me in thy righteousness. 2. Bow down thine ear to me: Make haste to deliver me. 3. And be thou my strong rock, and house of de fence: That thou mayest save me. 4. For thou art my strong rock, and my castle Be thou also my guide, and lead me for thy name s sake.

5. Draw me out of the net, that they have laid privily for me: For thou art my strength. 6. Into thy hands I commend my spirit: For thou has redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth. Officiant: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and forever shall be. SCRIPTURE READING Officiant: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden in light. Matthew 11.23-30 Thanks be to God. Hymn: Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. For Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth. I commend my spirit. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

Keep me as the apple of an eye. Hide me under the shadow of Thy wings. Musical Interlude Siciliano from Flute Sonata in E flat major, BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Philip Hoch, organ GOSPEL CANTICLE The Nunc dimittis Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Which thou has prepared; before the face of all people: To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Luke 2.29-32 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Anthem: Lux Aeterna Michelle Roueche (b. 1964) Let eternal light shine on them, Lord, As with Your saints in eternity, Because You are merciful. Grant them eternal rest, Lord, And let perpetual light shineon them, As with tour saints in eternity, Because You are merciful. PRAYERS Bel Canto Olivia Serb, soloist Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Officiate and THE LORD S PRAYER Abun D Bash Maiyo Mark D. Templeton (b. 1974) Our Father, who art in heaven, In the Syriac dialect of Aramaic Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Blessed art Thou, Lord God of our fathers: To be praised and glorified above all forever. Let us bless the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost: Let us praise and magnify Him forever. Blessed art Thou, O Lord in the firmament of heaven: To be praised and glorified above all forever. The almighty and most merciful Lord, guard us and give us His blessing. Anthem; Muusika Pärt Uusberg (b. 1986) Somewhere the original harmony must exist, hidden somewhere in the vast wilds. in Earth s might firmament, in the far reaches of swirling galaxies, in sunshine, in a little flower, in the song of a forest, in the music of a mother s voice, or in teardrops somewhere, immortality endures, and the original harmony will be found. how else could it have formed in human hearts music?

COLLECT Let us pray Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may respose upon thy eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen THE CONCLUSION Officiant: Abide with us, O Lord For it is toward evening and the day is far spent. As the watchmen look for the morning So do we look for thee, O Christ. Come with the dawning of the day And make thyself known in the breaking of bread. The Lord be with you And with Thy spirit. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. The almighty and merciful Lord, Father Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us. Anthem: Blessing in the Leaving Susan LaBarr (b. 1981) In the leaving Text by Jan Richardson in the letting go let there be this to hold onto at the last: the enduring of love the persisting of hope the remembering of joy the offering of gratitude the receiving of grace the blessing of peace.
