THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPER 5 June 10, 2018 AS WE GATHER Not all news is good news. Not every story is a happy story. But the Scriptures tell us of the grace God has shown to His people, even in their sinfulness and rejection of Him. God does not give up on His creation. The seeds He has planted will bear fruit according to His promise. There will be a happy ending! In this season of growing things, we renew our hope in the Lord, who is our health and salvation. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC THE WELCOME THE RITE OF FRIENDSHIP PREPARATION OPENING SONG/HYMN As the Deer As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. You re my friend and You are my brother even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, so much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver and the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. 3

INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Let us now make confession of our sins to God, our heavenly Father. C: Merciful Father, we confess our sinfulness. We are sinful from our birth and since that time have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. Our actions have brought injury to others. We have left undone those things we ought to have done; we have done those things we ought not to have done. We sincerely repent of our sins. Graciously hear this our confession, O Lord, and grant us Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit within us, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that each day we grow in righteousness and in hope to the glory of Your holy name. P: Jesus, our Redeemer and God s greatest gift, promises forgiveness, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be. WORD INTROIT Psalm 16:8 11; antiphon: Liturgical Text P: Blessed be the Lord! For He has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy. C: The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him. P: The Lord is the strength of His people; He is the saving refuge of His anointed. C: Oh, save Your people and bless Your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Blessed be the Lord! For He has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy. KYRIE p. 152 ALL Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. 4

C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, Your Son, Jesus, triumphed over Satan and freed us from our bondage to sin. Rule our lives, enable us to do Your will, and help others to see that we belong to You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 5

OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 3:8 15 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? 10 And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. 11 He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 12 The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL ALL: Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. On your wondrous works, I will meditate, and I will declare your greatness. EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 4:13 5:1 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, I believed, and so I spoke, we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 6

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 5 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE ALL: Alleluia. Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 3:20 35 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the third chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, He is out of his mind. 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, He is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons. 23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. 28 Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin 30 for they were saying, He has an unclean spirit. 31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you. 33 And he answered them, Who are my mother and my brothers? 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 7

CREED The First Article C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. P: What does this mean? C: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. HYMN OF THE DAY Built on the Rock LSB 645 1 Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Even when steeples are falling. Crumbled have spires in ev ry land; Bells still are chiming and calling, Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the souls distressed, Longing for rest everlasting. 2 Surely in temples made with hands God, the Most High, is not dwelling; High above earth His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling. Yet He who dwells in heav n above Chooses to live with us in love, Making our bodies His temple. 3 We are God s house of living stones, Built for His own habitation. He through baptismal grace us owns Heirs of His wondrous salvation. Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell With all His grace and His favor. 8

4 Here stands the font before our eyes, Telling how God has received us. The_altar recalls Christ s sacrifice And what His Supper here gives us. Here sound the Scriptures that proclaim Christ yesterday, today, the same, And evermore, our Redeemer. 5 Grant, then, O God, Your will be done, That, when the church bells are ringing, Many in saving faith may come Where Christ His message is bringing: I know My own; My own know Me. You, not the world, My face shall see. My peace I leave with you. Amen. Public domain SERMON OFFERING SONG Create in Me Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence, O Lord, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence, O Lord, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: As dear children ask their dear Father, let us bring to the Lord our prayers, knowing He will hear us and respond to our petitions. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 9

P: As citizens of our blessed land, we pray for the world in which we live and for the leaders of every nation, including our own, that peace would prevail around the globe and that we live without fear in our times. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: In this season of growth, we pray for the Church, that it grow and flourish even in those places where persecution for our Lord s sake is known. Let the light of the glory of God be reflected in every place. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Gathered in heart and mind, we pray for those in need of special petitions, including those who are ill, those dealing with special challenges, the shut-in, the unemployed, and those who grieve this day, [including...]. According to Your good and gracious will, bring strength to the weak, assurance to the fearful, and hope to those in peril. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: With thankfulness, we remember those whose earthly lives have been completed, including relatives, friends, and members of this household of faith and so many others. Bless us by the memory of all who have fallen asleep in Jesus, as in blessed hope we await the resurrection to life eternal. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Confident of our identity in Christ and assured that our heavenly Father hears our petitions, we say with hopeful hearts and voices: C: Amen. SILENT PRAYER The congregation is encouraged to take a few moments to pray silently for anything that weighs heavily on our hearts. We are also encouraged to pray for those in our lives who do not know Christ that the Holy Spirit may work powerfully to bring them to saving faith. SACRAMENT We believe, teach and confess that in the Lord s Supper, Christ comes to us and his body and blood are really present to forgive our sins and assure us of everlasting life and salvation. We, as baptized believers, prepare for Communion by examining ourselves, repenting of our sins, anticipating our Lord s forgiveness and drawing on Christ s power in the Sacrament to help us live an amended life for Christ. To those who share this confession with us, we invite you to join us as we welcome you to the Lord s Table. 10

PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. [Colossians 3:1] C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is truly good, right, and proper that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, because we know that our true identity is in You. Grant that we ever trust in the graciousness of Your plan for our lives and cling to the hope of eternity in Your glorious presence. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS p. 208 11

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING p. 161 P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have delivered us from death and the power of Satan. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness, that we live rejoicing in resurrection hope. Receive our prayers and thanksgiving, and grant us Your abiding peace. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 12

Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3. We will lift up each other in prayer in all that we do by turning to God for guidance and support, showing our gratitude and thanksgiving, and realizing we depend on Him for our entire existence. 4. We will offer a hand of hospitality welcoming all people by acknowledging the presence of others, greeting everyone with concern for them and openly sharing our biblical faith with everyone in word and deed. 5. We will be positive and joyful sharing openly our happiness in the Lord with fun, positive humor and inclusive fellowship always defending each other, speaking well of each other, and putting the best construction on everything.
