with Father Bill Immaculee Ilibagiza, the New York Times best-selling author of Left to Tell; Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Genocide will be at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Friday & Saturday, February 23-24, 2018 (Fri: 5-9 p.m., and Sat: 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Immaculee will share her experiences as a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide where members of the Hutu tribe in Rwanda took up arms against the Tutsi tribe. In 100 days, they slaughtered over 800,000 Tutsis using only spears, clubs and machetes. It was genocide, and few Tutsis survived - Immaculee was one of the few as she hid with seven other women in a cramped bathroom for 91 days while killers lurked outside the door. Turning to her faith and the Rosary, it was that turning point towards God and away from hate that saved Immaculee. Don t miss this rare opportunity to experience Immaculee s powerful journey through her remarkable personal testimony, inspirational music and prayer. This event is expected to fill to capacity and tickets will be sold after all the Masses on November 18 and 19 th in the church foyer. You are encouraged to make your reservation early. Tickets are also on sale at the Parish Office, or can be purchased online at www.immaculee.com, click on Shop/Events and then select Retreats (Las Cruces, New Mexico). Please call Martha at the Parish Office, 575/524-8563 for additional information. Dear Families, Thanks to all who helped your children dress as saints for our all Saints Day Mass. SAINT ALBERT the GREAT (1206-1280) Patron Saint of Scientists Feast day - November 15 As a young man, Albert studied at the University of Padua, in 1223 he entered the Dominican order, and in 1225 he went to Cologne. At that time, he was thinking of leaving religious life, but the Holy Virgin Mary appeared to him to promise her support if he continued to walk the spiritual path. In 1241, he went to the University of Paris, where he lectured in theology. In 1248, he set up a house of studies for the order in Cologne, where he took his small band of budding theologians, the chief of whom was Thomas Aquinas, who became his greatest pupil. In 1260, he was appointed bishop of Regensburg, but he resigned after three years. In his later years, he resided in Cologne and he took part in the Council of Lyons. It was in Cologne that his reputation as a scientist grew. He carried on experiments in chemistry and physics in his makeshift laboratory and built up a collection of plants, insects, and chemical compounds that gave substance to his reputation. He was friend and adviser to popes, bishops, kings, and statesmen and made his own unique contribution to the learning of his age. He died in Cologne on November 15, 1280, and is buried in St. Andrea's Church in that city. His writings are remarkable for their exact scientific knowledge, and for that reason he has been made the patron saint of scientists.
