SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Peter Chysologus Tuesday: St. Ignatius of Loyola Wednesday: St. Alphonsus Liguori Thursday: St. Eusebius of Vercelli; St. Peter Julian Eymard Friday: First Friday Saturday: St. John Vianney; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is Saint James of the Field of Stars. There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of liturgical detour. We have been listening to Saint Mark s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements bread and wine into the Lord s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. SHARE THE JOURNEY CONTINUES The Diocese of Venice continues to promote Share the Journey, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis. This series is designed to answer questions focusing on Refugee Resettlement & serve as an aide to build bridges of reconciliation, understanding &hospitality, in keeping with the spirit of Share the Journey. Are Refugees a Burden? 1. The primary goal of the U.S. refugee resettlement program is to help provide protection to refugees and help them become self-sufficient. (Sources: U.S. Refugee Act, Code of Federal Regulations 45 400.1) 2. Within a period of 2-4 months, most refugees manage to find a stable job, send their children to school and pay taxes. One study in Cleveland found that in 2016, refugees generated a total economic impact of $88.2 million in spending that supported 1,220 jobs in the region. In addition, refugees and refugee service organizations contributed $4.5 million in taxes to the state, county, and municipal governments. (Sources: Chmura Economics & Analytics; MPI) 3. Likewise, between 2002 and 2012 refugees started 38 businesses that employed 141 locals in the Cleveland area. In addition to contributing economically, refugees culturally enrich communities and parishes with new perspectives, histories and cultures. (Sources: Chmura Economics & Analytics; MPI) STAND FIRM In time of desolation one should never make a change, but stand firm in the resolutions and decisions that guided one the day before the desolation. St. Ignatius of Loyola MARRIAGE STRUGGLING? If your marriage has become troubled and stressed, unloving or uncaring; if you have grown cold and distant; even if you are divorced or separated, or are thinking about it, no matter how bad it may be Retrouvaille can help, as it has helped tens of thousands of others. Henry Susa Epiphany Cathedral Perpetual Adoration Chapel Parishioners from all parishes are invited to participate. To schedule a Holy Hour call Jenny 441-7495. Note from Epiphany Cathedral: We are approximately two months away from completion of the Adoration Chapel. We're reaching out to our feeder parishes asking once for your support. There are 79 hours still to be filled before we can open. Even if the chapel is completed - we can't begin 24/7 Perpetual Adoration until each hour is covered by two Adorers. Any support you can give us will be appreciated. Thank you! PRAYER FOR SAFETY DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Church Hours (Parish Center Building) Monday thru Saturday Morning doors open at 7:45AM doors close at 9:30AM Saturday Afternoon doors open at 2:30PM doors close at 5:00PM Sunday doors open at 6:30AM doors close at 12:00PM Please note: For security purposes, access to the church area will be restricted to the times listed above. Thank you for your patience and understanding. FEAST OF FAITH Penitential Act Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the Penitential Act is really less about our sins than it is about God s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish when he realizes who is in the boat with him he falls at Jesus feet with the words, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The Penitential Act of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or I confess to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly.
