Pastor s Perspective Welcome to July!! I can t begin to express the joy and thrill of being installed as your permanent pastor on June 24 th. Having two of my best friends and colleagues here to participate in the service to help make this truly the celebration God meant it to be. Pastor Ron Freimark, my internship supervisor and mentor, ordained me back in 1992 and installed me in my first parish in Odin, Minnesota and now here at Lund. And to have my close friend and colleague, Pastor Jeff Teeples here to participate in the service. Wow is all I can say right now! And to have all of you join in this grand celebration that God gave to us that day. And my family, I am so thankful for all the support you have given Jane and myself this past year. A big thank you to all of you for being here for us, strengthening us with your unending love. Thanks for the folks of Lund for the great meal and reception for us following the service! It was a glorious and joyful celebration and my family and friends got to see how great a congregation you are; inviting, welcoming, and loving. We are family here together as one! As we are now permanently part of the greater community here in Detroit Lakes, hopefully we can continue to grow and serve our God as a member of this community and Jane and I hope you all will join us in this. Good things will come from this, I promise! Our relationship as a community becomes evident every Sunday when we are worshiping together, praying together, singing together, hearing God s word together. We are all sent out into the coming week, but we are not all leaving with the same treasure. Some are uplifted by a hymn, some feel comforted by a prayer, some have learned something 2

new about the meaning of God s calling in their lives. Some people can even be a little upset, because they feel challenged to change something in their lives, after they heard a different perspective on a passage or a word from Scripture, or after they were invited into a metaphor that finally explained to them a possible meaning of a step in following Jesus. They are upset, because the old excuses are no longer valid. We are family! Yes, we are family! And because of that, we care for each other, pray for each other, and stay in contact with each other. But all this is only possible, if we COM- MUNICATE with each other. We do not want Garrison Keillor s words to become true in our congregation: that Lutherans expect their church and their pastor to care for them, but they don t think about letting the church office or the pastor know that they are sick and in the hospital, or that they have a surgery coming up. So please, let us know when something important is going on in your life! Even the joyful celebrations! Just like the body, every family is a complicated system. In our relationships, we are dependent on each other. When we react to members of the community by reaching out, others will follow. When we are listening, other partners in ministry will listen, too. When we show interest in each other s lives, it creates the spirit of community. I wish you all a restful, inspiring, and blessed rest of the summer! Shalom Pastor Steve 3
