HIGHLANDS HIGHLIGHTS Happy New Year Volume XI, Issue I January, 2014 December Soup Nite Just want to say thank you once again for all you do! December Soup Nite we had another record number of people and there was not a single morsel of food left over! It all went to good use and to hungry stomachs. We also fed our shut ins, thanks to the Jordans. So many people came in and thanked us over and over for doing this. It is so helpful for them as they rush off to school activities for the holiday or just because...we had 4 families stay and eat with us and Jane passed out candy canes to the children with the "Legend of the Candy Cane" attached. Too cute! Andrea made special holiday cupcakes and next time we know to make more of them!!!! Our next Soup Nite is January 13th. As soon as we decide the menu, I'll be sure to let you know. Again, thank you for your willingness to serve and I hope you are receiving blessings in your giving. One conversation I had with the grandmother went like this, and she said: "I was talking to a friend and was so sorry for the children and that they would not get any Christmas presents this year, but I told my friend that the Lord would provide, and then you call Ms. Bonnie! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" You truly were a blessing to these families this Christmas season! Thanks! From the Pastor Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 Time has a way of just slipping by, and sometimes you don t even notice how much has gone by. I came across these pictures of my family when we came to Highlands in 2002. They really showed how much life has changed for my family over the last decade. As we begin a new year, it makes me wonder what will the next year and decade bring for us? That question makes me realize that no matter what happens, choosing to serve the Lord must always be a priority. With time slipping away so quickly, choosing to serve the Lord must be a daily decision. So as we begin this new year, let me ask you a few questions. Does Jesus have your affections? Is He your first love, the passion of your heart? Does Jesus have your ambitions? Is the progress of His kingdom the focus of your life? Does Jesus have your assets? Are your possessions at His disposal? Do you readily let loose of them when the need arises? Does Jesus have your acknowledgments? Are you seeking ways in which you can reveal your love for Him as you live your life each day? My prayer for you, is that you will always choose to love and serve the Lord day in, day out, year in, year out, decade in, decade out. I look forward to serving the Lord with you this new year, and this next decade! Pastor Mark Page 2 Volume XI, Issue I

Thank you so much for all your love and support for Becca and Bobby s wedding. It went very well. We were able to transform the fellowship hall into a fairy tale castle for them. The ceremony went very well. They both found jobs in the Greenville, SC area, and have also found an apartment. Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they start their life together. Youth This month the youth have participated in a number of activities including a tacky sweater contest, Christmas party, talent show, and helping decorate the church for the Advent season. This month we have continued learning about a Biblical worldview and what that looks like in today's world. We would like to thank everyone who came to and participated in the talent show! It was wonderful to see everyone's talents and performances! The talent show was enjoyed by all. We were very entertained. Sal Macaluso was the MC and kept the jokes coming. Chris McCoy, Chad, Emilie, and Michelle Miles did a performance with their brass instruments. Kristy Summers played the steel drums. Jessica Yuspeh sang Acapulco, John Mark Avitabile did a reading. David Harris, and Zack Sinclair did a ribbon dance. Emily Caughman sang and Chad Miles played the guitar. Jerita Hunt sang a solo. It was a great time! Page 4 Volume XI, Issue I

Congratulations! Eric and Matt won 1 st place in their age groups and were able to have their pictures taken with Jep Robertson. This was the 5K duck dash run on 12/21/13 starting and finishing at Turner Field in Atlanta. Participants were issued beards and camo bandanas and encouraged to wear their best red neck running gear. Lee Hunt MMO MMO celebrated Christmas with a play about the birthday of Jesus. After the play there was a visit from Santa. The theme for this month is "My Five Senses" and the color is white. The shape is oval. The bible story is the Miracle of Jesus and the Christian Value is Kindness. The verse is God gave us eyes to see. (Proverbs 20:12) Caption describing picture or graphic. Santa Party On December 18th Santa came to Highlands for a special party. We had children visit from our MMO program. They had time to tell Santa what they wanted and watch two different puppet shows. Then everyone enjoyed a pot luck supper. Thank You Thank you for another year here at highlands! You have filled our lives with joy and gladness. Thank you also for our Christmas bonus. We appreciate each and every one of you. Pastor Mark and Bonnie Please take time to sign up for a ministry team. Everyone has different talents and gifts given them by God. Please use those gifts and talents for the glory of God. The sign up Ministry teams sheets are in the Narthex. Each team has a description of things that they are responsible for. It takes a lot of people to keep the church functioning. Please pray about where you will best be able to serve. Highlands Highlights Page 7

On December 22nd following the beautiful Christmas Cantata we had a luncheon to welcome the members that joined the church this past year. We had a nice warm bowl of a couple different Chili s while we welcomed Temple and Norma Elam, and New Members Luncheon John and Jane Lovern, He told us of how God is working and is grateful for our prayers and financial support. He continues to need financial assistance to continue the work God has called him to do. Please be in prayer that God will provide the resources needed. We were sorry that Roger and Danielle Wallace were not able to join us Matt Statham spoke to us about his 1st semester at Penn State with RUF. On December 15th we delivered Poinsettias, sang carols, brought and ate lunch with several of our members that are not able to get out on a regular basis. It was very much appreciated by those that HALO received the visit. Those that went were equally blessed by giving of their time to others. It was such a joy to see the smiles that Loving and helping others just hearing Christmas Carols can bring to someone's face. Please mark your calendars for Feb. 8th.
