Luke 23:27-33 30 A.D. at Calvary Jesus' Final Week Friday 27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? 32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 10 3

WHO NAILED JESUS TO THE CROSS There are two important questions we all need to be able to answer about our Bible lesson here in JOHN CHPATER 19 The first one is who nailed Jesus to the cross? Many people say it was the Jews. Others say the Romans and Pontius Pilate, Read Matthew 27 : 11-16 This is the account of Jesus being falsely accused by the Jews and Pilate seeing very clearly that Jesus had done nothing wrong wanted to let Jesus go free. However, the Jewish leaders pressured Pilate into nailing Jesus to the cross, Pilate though that he could take a bowl of water and wash his hands of whole matter and he have no part in Jesus death. In our present scripture in John 19 : 31-37 starts by telling us about the Jews wanting to have Jesus and the other two men taken off the cross before the Sabbath day, because T he Sabbath Day was holy to the Jews and this Sabbath Day was Passover Day making it even more special.they called it a High Day. One a year the Jews were to celebrate Passover to remind them of what God had done for them many years earlier when they were slaves in the land of Egypt. God had all the Jews kill a lamb, put the blood on their doors, and eat the lamb, That night God sent the death Angle through all Egypt and the first born of every house died, but the families of the Jews who had the blood of the Lamb on their door were safe. No one their family died. God is able to save. God did not want to the Jews to forget what he did for them that night and how he delivered them out of the hands of the Egyptians. The Jewish leaders who had just killed Jesus by having Him nailed to the cross for no good reason, wanted him off the cross and out of their minds before The Sabbath Day their Passover Feast. They thought that if they put their sin behind them and went to church that everything would be OK. They went to Pilate again and ask him for permission to break the legs of Jesus, the other two men so they would die very fast and they could take them off the cross, and they would not 6 have to look at them any more. Pilate thought that he was done with Jesus when he washed his hands. Nevertheless, this wrong doing never went away and Pilate was still involved with the Jews in the death of Jesus, And even after Jesus was taken off the cross, Pilate still was involved Matthew 27: 62-66 Pilate sent guards to watch the grave of Jesus, so no one could come take his body away. We can see that yes Pilate helped nail Jesus to the cross because he loved his position of power and want to please the Jews, So they would not make trouble for him rather than do what was right. We can also say that the Jews helped to nail Jesus to the cross because the Jewish leaders were jealous of Jesus and wanted Him out of their way, they wanted to be religions but not righteous. Yes, we must say that every one who has ever sinned helped to nail Jesus to the cross, It was MY SIN and YOUR SIN. That nailed Jesus to the cross. This brings us to the second question. Why was Jesus nailed to the cross? It is because that from the day Adam and Eve sinned their had to be a way to take away sin, You can not clean yourself of sin by washing your hands in soap and water like Pilate tried to do. It just keeps coming back to you and you become more involved with your sin like Pilate with Jesus' death. You can not clean your sins by going to church or religion like Jews tried to do. You can not do something wrong or hurt someone and hide or bury it and go back to doing what looks good to everyone else. Your sin is not death and you can not hide it forever, it will come back to you. There is only one answer to sin, THAT IS JESUS. He had to die for our sin the just for the unjust, that is why Jesus had to be nailed to the cross. Will you believe what the Bible has to say about Jesus? If you believe that JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SI NS and that JESUS RAISED HIMSELF FROM THE DEAD Just as he said that HE WOULD, then your SINS ARE FORGIVEN and they are DEAD and you are ALIVE! 7
