Rev. Fr. Ninan Philip Panackamattam Vicar & President The definition of TOLERANCE is The ability to deal with something unpleasant or annoying, or to continue existing despite bad or difficult conditions Tolerance is a virtue much needed in our turbulent world. But we must recognize that there is a difference between tolerance and tolerate. Tolerance for an individual does not grant him or her license to do wrong, nor does your tolerance obligate you to tolerate his or her misdeed. That distinction is fundamental to an understanding of this vital virtue. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum says, Tolerance is no catchphrase, but a quality we must cherish and practice. It must be woven into the fabric of our society to safeguard our future and maintain the progress we have made. There can be no bright future for the Middle East without an intellectual reconstruction that re-establishes the values of ideological openness, diversity, and acceptance of others viewpoints, whether intellectual, cultural, or religious. Our highest priorities in life are to love God and to love our neighbors. That broadly includes neighbors in our own family, our community, our nation, and our world. Obedience to the second commandment facilitates obedience to the first commandment. Being a global citizen, our ultimate aim should be to follow CHRIST S GOLDEN RULES. I would like to sum up by adhering to Gandhiji s words, Tolerance is the only thing that will enable persons belonging to different religions to live as good neighbours and friends. May God Almighty bless us all. Apostle James ( Son of Alphaeus ) The Holy Apostle James was the son of Alphaeus and one of the twelve. He was the brother of the holy Evangelist Matthew. The Church commemorates the Apostle James on October 23, and on June 30 with the Synaxis of the Glorious and All-Praiseworthy Twelve Apostles of Christ. James heard the Lord's words and witnessed his miracles. After the Descent of the Holy Spirit the Apostle James, Alphaeus, and the Apostle Andrew the First-Called (November 30) made missionary journeys throughout Judea, Edessa, Gaza, and Eleutheropolis, proclaiming the Gospel, healing all sorts of sickness and disease, and converting many to the path of salvation. St James finished his apostolic work in the Egyptian city of Ostrachina, where he was crucified by the pagans. 2

St. Luke Biography About St. Luke the Evangelist Companion of St Paul St. Luke, the writer of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, has been identified with St. Paul's "Luke, the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14) Luke explains in the introduction to his gospel that his writings were inspired by close association with Paul and his companions. Luke joined Paul at Troas in the year of 51, accompanying him from Macedonia to Philippi. Luke remained with Paul to the end of his life, even during his imprisonment and sufferings, "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). Saint Luke was born a Greek and a Gentile in Antioch, Syria. He was a physician and it is believed that he may have also been a slave, as it was not common in his day for slaves to be educated in medicine so the family would have a resident physician. Luke became a close companion of Paul of Tarsus and accompanied him on his missionary journeys. It is very possible that Luke provided medical assistance to Paul when he had been beaten, stoned, or nearly drowned while evangelizing to the Western Roman Empire. Luke is the only Gentile to have written books in the Bible. He is the writer of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles and his writings have been proven historically accurate. In the third Gospel, Luke emphasizes Christ's compassion for sinners and for those who suffer. One will also find in Luke's account of the gospel, a strong emphasis on the role women played in Christ's ministry. Luke's Christian ministry can be followed in the book of Acts. Up until the sixteenth chapter the story of Acts is written in third person, much like an historian recording facts. The voice of the narrator then changes to first person and scholars believe this is done at the time Luke first joined Paul at Troas in the year 51. The book of Acts switches back to third person and scholars believe that this reflects a period in time when Luke was not present during the events that are recorded. Saint Luke's feast day is celebrated on October 18th Gandhi Jayanti is observed as a national holiday in India. A solemn celebration marking the birth date of Gandhiji, the father of the nation, includes prayer meetings at the Raj Ghat where he was cremated. People visit Raj Ghat or pay homage to Gandhi wherever his statues are erected. Verses and prayers are read out from the holy books of all the religions. Gandhi's favourite song, Raghupati Raghava, is invariably sung at all the meetings associated with him. 3

Mission Work by Dubai Sunday school Students For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. St. Matthew 25:35-36 To inculcate a sense of responsibility among our Sunday school students towards society at large, we had encouraged our students to visit any one of the following places during summer vacation (July-August 2017) in India or abroad. 1. Orphanage 2. Old Age Home 3. Government Hospital The main objective of this mission activity was that we wanted our children to spend at least 2-3 hours for a life-changing visit during their two months of summer vacation. As part of the initiative, we had the Sunday school students who had visited orphanages last year to address and inspire the students during the common class all through the month of June. Also, we had distributed pamphlets to all the students informing them to visit a place of need during this vacation. We are glad to inform that around 100 students visited orphanages / old age homes spread across Kerala. This included Sneha Bhavans, Bala Bavans & old age homes spread across Kerala from Wayanad to Kozhikode to Ernakulum to Pampady to Kollam to Trivandrum. We are also happy to share that few of our children visited orphanages in Tanzania, Dubai Centre for Special needs, Bangalore, Vizag, Chennai & Coimbatore Mercy Home, Vechoochira (Ranny,Kerala) along with H.G. Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan Hearing the Mission Work done by our Sunday school students during the last vacation, H.G. Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan during one of his visits to Dubai, suggested that he would like to join the families of our Dubai Sunday School students during summer vacation. We are glad to inform that on 31st July 2017, families of five of our Sunday school students got together to visit the Mercy Home, Vechoochira (Ranny). We were blessed that our beloved Thirumeni in spite of His old age was there at the Mercy Home to welcome all of us. Thirumeni spent the whole day with us wherein he personally took our children for a tour around the Mercy Home s Small farmhouse, interacted with our children throughout the day and introduced our children to all the inmates of Mercy Home. Also, our Former headmaster Babukutty sir and family joined the Sunday School students during this trip to Mercy Home. We are happy to share that we had sponsored the lunch for the day and also made a donation which is sufficient for a few days of meal. We intend to support this Mercy Home in the coming year also. We take this opportunity to thank all the parents of our dear children for their selfless efforts in reaching out to places of need in spite of their busy schedule during this vacation. By the Grace of God, we pray that this visit to an orphanage / old age home shall have a profound life-changing impact in the young hearts and minds of our children. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ - Galatians 6:1 8

St. Basil Orthodox Bible Camp (02 August to 06 August 2017) It has been a great honor and privilege for our Dubai Sunday School when H.G. Yakob Mar Elias Metropolitan of Brahmavar Diocese led a five-day residential camp exclusively for seven teenage boys of ours during this summer vacation. The camp was organized at St. Basil Orthodox Bible School, Sasthamcotta, Kerala during the first week of August. The Bible school is situated at a beautiful lake-shore scenic village area of 60 acres of land surrounded by the famous Sasthamcotta fresh-waterlake in the district of Kollam, Kerala (www.orthodoxbibleschool.com). The entire program was designed and lead by H.G. Yakoob Mar Elias Metropolitan. We also had the privilege of having H.G. Zachariah Mar Anthonios Metropolitan of Kollam diocese addressing our children on the first day of the camp. The camp focused on our Orthodox Worship, Tradition, Discipline, Holy Confession, Service attitudes and holistic personality. Thirumeni guided our teenage boys on the practical aspects of Orthodox living and practice. The boys stayed at the Bible school campus dormitory. Their day started with early morning prayer at 5.00 am. Mobile phones were not allowed during the camp and there was no access to television. The key resources for the camp included Rev. Fr. Dr. K L Mathew Vaidhyan Cor-Episcopa, Rev.Fr. Joji K Joy, Mr. Jigi Thompson IAS, Dr. Biju Thomas (CMC Vellore), Retd. Col. Shaju Thomas, Mr. Sadhasivan Nair and other priests from the Bible School. During one of the evenings, all of us visited and had dinner with the inmates of Balabhavan on the same campus along with Thirumeni and other achens of the ashram. The camp concluded on 06th August 2017 with Holy Qurbana. Parents of the participants also attended the Holy Qurbana which was followed by breakfast and final meeting with Thirumeni. (Exclusively for Dubai Sunday School Students) Following are the feedback given by the participants: After attending the camp for 5 days, I feel at home at the ashram After listening to the sermon on suffering, I am mentally prepared to accept suffering I have decided to completely restrict my mobile usage.. Steven Santhosh Thomas, Grade XII After attending this camp, I realized that I have wasted my life over the years henceforth I have decided to use my time prudently John Geever, Grade VIII Henceforth I will continue to take fast and have vegetarian food more often and attend such spiritual camps in future more frequently. Ahron Daniel Biju, Grade X Achens taught us prayers - before and after food, early morning prayers etc. I liked the scenic beauty of the place and was able to live without a fan or an a/c. I believe what I learned in this camp was practical and useful for my life Aaron Thomas Lee, Grade IX Initially, I was apprehensive about the camp, but after the first day, I started enjoying the camp, learned to wake up for the morning prayers at 5 am, l earned how to lead a systematic life henceforth.. Reuben Thomas Kurian, Grade X Amazing classes by all the resource persons, deeply indebted to Thirumeni for having spent his entire five days for just seven participants, never missed my mobile for five days during my camp, learned the various aspects of Holy Bible..finally, I am very inspired, the way Thirumeni leads His life Milan Varghese Mathew, Grade IX I learned to wash my plates after my lunch and dinner, learned many things from Thirumeni on how to lead my spiritual life henceforth, earlier I was very scared to speak to Bishops but now after the camp, I am very comfortable and will be at ease in speaking to the bishops. Allen C Sunil, Grade X On behalf of the Sunday school, we like to thank the Vicar, Asst. Vicar, Sunday School teachers and all the parents for having encouraged the children to attend this camp during their summer vacation. Hope this inspires many more parents of our Sunday school to take up such camps for building the spiritual lives of their children in current and challenging times. By God s Grace, we hope to organize such focussed spiritual programs for our teenage boys and girls during the next summer vacation for building and grooming future spiritual leaders of our Church. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world St. Matthew 28:19,20 9
