Teacher preparation in advance: 1. Read the scripture passage. 2. Prepare an opening prayer in case nobody volunteers to pray. 3. Check the art room to see what supplies exist. Purchase and cut poster board and tissue papers. Make a chart with the message in other languages (see languages in Word document). 4. Prepare all the materials you will need for the creation process. Have the materials ready to go. Post the language list and have several copies available. There will be limited time for the creation process, so do everything you can to conserve time. 5. Decide how you want to close the lesson. Prepare a prayer or use one of the group suggestions. Materials: Red poster board 22 X 28 precut to 22 X 1 ¼ strips Tissue paper in red and orange precut into 4-5 X 2-2 1/2 rectangles Tacky glue Scissors Staplers and staples Marker pens Chart with The Spirit of the Lord is upon us in many languages. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS Introducing the Lesson: 1. Greet the children and introduce yourself, and remember you are interacting students who may not know you. 2. Start the lesson time with prayer. Ask for volunteers, but plan on praying yourself. A short prayer asking God to help us to learn more and to be good disciples would be appropriate. Bible Story: 1. This is the story of Pentecost. Jesus died and was risen from the dead. On the fortieth day afterwards, he went to heaven. Before he went, he told his disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit to come and fill them with power from heaven and that they would tell people about Jesus throughout the world (Acts 1:8). 2. Nine days later was the feast of Pentecost, a festival celebrating the harvest. Followers of Jesus who came from many different lands and spoke different languages that were foreign to each other met to celebrate in one room. 3. Suddenly there was a noise from heaven that roared like the wind! Then the people saw what looked like fiery tongues moving about the room! A tongue touched each person! They knew that the Holy Spirit was with them. To their surprise, they could speak languages that they hadn t known before. The people in the room who came from the countries where the language was spoken could understand the people who were speaking in a new language for the first time. Everyone was excited and confused and wondered what it meant! 4. The followers were now able to travel elsewhere to tell everyone in their own language about Jesus. And they did travel and preach the message of Jesus. That is how we know about Jesus today. Pentecost Noah s Art Lesson Page 2
5. Take a minute to talk to the children about the creation they are going to be doing in this workshop. Tell them that they will be making a crown that looks like flames to symbolize Pentecost. Put your sample crown on your head. Application: 1. Create! Have the children listen to the Bible story (1-4 above). Show them a sample. Give them each a narrow strip of poster board. Have them print with markers, the message The Spirit of the Lord is upon us in a foreign language. They can copy it from a chart, which should be hung in the room. Make copies available for each table. 2. Tell them to take about twelve pieces of colored tissue paper and shape one narrow end of each with scissors to look like a tongue. 3. When all the pieces are complete, the shepherds can assist the children in squeezing a thin line of glue on the blank side of the poster board. Have the pieces of tissue placed along the glue strip. They can overlap slightly and should point down when worn. When complete, the poster board can be sized by overlapping ends and held with one staple - another job for the shepherds. 4. Clean up! Involve everyone in cleaning up so that you will have time to share together in the closing. You may want to have a prearranged signal for clean up and tell them at beginning of art project what that will be - perhaps giving them a 5 minute warning and then the final clean up notice to allow those who need a bit more warning that they need to complete whatever they are working on. Reflection Journal: 1. Ask the shepherds to pass out Journals and pencils/markers. The children should spend a few minutes reflecting upon the morning's lesson 2. Jesus wanted everyone who believed in him to tell others about how he died for us and yet is always with us. Just as he said the Holy Spirit would come, God sent a great wind and flames to touch believers and give them the power to share God s message in many lands. a. What do we call this special event? b. What happened? c. What power did the followers get? Closing: 1. Encourage the children to think about what Pentecost means. 2. Say the Key Memory Verse together (on cover of reflection journal). You may want to have this verse printed on a banner and hung in the room, write it on the white board in the room, or have it on slips of paper that each child can take home. 3. Pray! Ask the children if they have any prayer requests. Thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to us so that we can do good things. Pentecost Noah s Art Lesson Page 3
