Baptism I * This service can be used as a separate baptismal worship, or part of it may be used in the regular Sunday worship. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit _. Our help comes from the Lord. God made heaven and earth. We pray: O Lord, help us people already baptized into death with Jesus Christ, your Son, to live with Jesus through the power of HIS resurrection. Jesus lives and reigns with the Father and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. We attend to the Gospel written in Mark 10:13-16, "Some people brought young children to Jesus for His blessing. But His followers scolded them. Happened that Jesus saw that, He wasn't happy and said to them, 'Let the children come to Me. Don't block them, because children are members of God's kingdom. Remember this. People must welcome God"s kingdom as children, then they can enter that kingdom.' And now Jesus gathered the children, touched them, and blessed them." Our Father in heaven. Holy is Your name. Your kingdom come; Your wish happen on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily blessing; and forgive our sins as we forgive people sinning against us. And lead us not into temptation; but save us from Satan's power. Because the kingdom and the power and the glory are Yours forever. *If the baptism is part of the regular worship then begin here. Use this worship in Page 1

place of the Creed. My friends, we learn from the Bible that all people are born with sin. All people earn God's anger and punishment. This person, also, is born with sin and earns God's anger. But God, the Father, full of mercy and love, promised a Savior. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Jesus accepted the sins for all the world. Jesus saved babies and all people from sin, death, and eternal punishment. Jesus commanded people to bring children to Him and He blessed the children. Jesus commanded Baptism. Jesus said, "Go and make all people become My followers. Baptize all people in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." Jesus also promised, "Every person believing and baptized will be saved." Now it is good that you obey Jesus' command, believe His promise, and come for baptism. *Use this section for infant baptism only. The pastor makes the sign of the cross on the forehead and heart. The cross shows (NAME) is saved because Jesus died on the cross. I now ask the parents: God gave you this child. God gives you the responsibility to take care of this child and help (NAME) to grow. You now obey God and bring this child for baptism. You want this child to join God's family. In baptism God chooses this child and accepts it. God gives you a new responsibility to teach this child about Jesus, the Savior, and help the child to stay faithful to God. Will you accept this responsibility? Pt: Pt: Yes. Do you want your child baptized into this church? Yes. Page 2

*If there are godparents, they answer the following. I now ask the godparents: It is your duty to remember this child often in your prayers, to remind the child about baptism, and help the parents teach the child about Jesus the Savior. Gp: Yes. Do you accept this responsibility? All: I now ask the members of this congregation: Do you promise to help the father and mother teach this child about Jesus? Do you promise to encourage this child to stay faithful to God? Yes. We all confess our belief: I believe in God the Father, All mighty, God made heaven and earth. And I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. Jesus received life from the Holy Spirit; born from the Virgin Mother; suffered under Pontius Pilate; crucified, dead and buried. Jesus descended into hell. The third day Jesus arose again from the dead, ascended into heaven, and reigns with God the Father, All mighty. From heaven Jesus will come to judge the living and dead people. Page 3

I believe in the Holy Spirit; His one holy church on earth and in heaven; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life eternal in heaven. Pt: What is your child's name? (NAME OF CHILD) *Use the following section for older children and adult baptism. The pastor makes the sign of the cross on the forehead and heart. All: The cross shows (NAME) is saved because Jesus died on the cross. I believe in the Holy Spirit; His one holy church on earth and in heaven; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life eternal in heaven. Re: What is your name? Holy Spirit_ *Pastor puts his hand on the head of the person. All mighty God forgives all your sins and makes faith in your heart. May God give you strength to continue in your faith until eternal life in heaven. Page 5

Baptism II *This service can be used by itself or as part of a regular service. Some parts of this service are optional. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit stay with you all. _ (The appointed lessons of the day may be read.) *If the baptism is part of the regular worship, then begin here. Use this worship in place of the Creed. Holy Baptism is the way that God the Father makes new sons and daughters. In the water of Baptism we become joined to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Born again by the water and the Holy Spirit, we become members of Christ's kingdom. Living together with Jesus and His people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to God's wishes. *Use this section for infant baptism only. If there is no godparent, then a parent may say the following. Who wishes this Holy Gift of Baptism? Gp: I bring (NAME) to receive the Holy Gift of Baptism. You brought this child for Holy Baptism. Do you now promise that you will faithfully take-care-of (NAME) and help him/her in every way with God's support so that (NAME) will grow to confess his/her Page 6

belief? Gp: Yes. *Use this section for older children and adult baptism. Re: I come to receive the Holy Gift of Baptism. *The service resumes at this point. All: We all confess our belief: I believe in God the Father, All mighty, God made heaven and earth. And I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. Jesus received life from the Holy Spirit; born from the Virgin Mother; suffered under Pontius Pilate; crucified, dead and buried. Jesus descended into hell. I believe in the Holy Spirit; His one holy church on earth and in heaven; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life eternal in heaven. The Lord stay with you. And also with you, pastor. Now thank the Lord our God. We give God our thanks and praise. Holy God, mighty Lord, merciful Father, we give You thanks, because in the beginning of the world Your Holy Spirit moved over the waters and You made the skies and the earth. With the gift of Page 7

water You feed and support us and all living things. You saved Your chosen people, Noah and his family, and You destroyed the wicked people with the Great Flood. You lead Your people from slavery to freedom through the sea to the promised land. In the waters of the river named Jordan Your Son received baptism. Through Jesus death and resurrection, Your dear Son freed us from the slavery under sin and death and opened the way to happiness and freedom in eternal life. Jesus made water a picture of cleaning, new birth, and His kingdom. In obeying Jesus' command, we make followers of all nations baptizing people in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Pour Your Holy Spirit to make this water a true cleansing water. Wash away the sins of those using this water, and give them the gift of Your glorious heavenly kingdom. To You we give praise and honor and worship through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, in fellowship with the Holy Spirit, now and forever. *Pastor now applies the water three times. (NAME), I baptize you in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit._ The Lord stay with you. And also with you, pastor. God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You for freeing Your sons and daughters from the power under sin and for resurrecting them to a new life in this Holy Gift of Baptism. Pour Your Holy Spirit upon this person; give wisdom and understanding, advice and power, knowledge and respect. Fill this person with eagerness and interest in You. Page 8

*Pastor makes the sign of the cross on the forehead and heart. (NAME), child of God, the cross of Christ shows you belong to Him forever. _ *Optional: a white garment is put on the baptized. Put-on this robe, because in Baptism Christ cleans you from all sins and welcomes you to eat at His table. *Optional: a lighted candle is given to the Godparent/Parent/Person. Let your life shine in-front-of people that they can see your good doings and give glory to your Father in heaven. *Use this section in infant baptism only. The group goes to the altar. O God, You are the giver of all life, show kindness to these parents. Let them rejoice in the gift of this child given by You. Make them good teachers and examples of a holy life. Make them strong in their own baptism that they can enjoy eternal salvation with their children in heaven. We pray in the name of Jesus, Your Son, our Lord. *In the regular worship, the congregation continues with a hymn. If a separate baptismal service, then close with the following. Page 9

Jesus taught us to pray saying: Our Father in heaven, holy is Your name. Your kingdom come, Your wish happen on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily blessing; and forgive our sins as we forgive those people sinning against us. And lead us not into temptation, but save us from Satan's power; because the kingdom and the power and the glory are Yours forever. God gave us this new member. We accept (NAME) with love and joy. We welcome you into the Lord's family. We accept you as a member of Christ's kingdom, children of our heavenly Father, and receiver of God's gift of heaven. The peace of the Lord stay with you. And also with you, pastor. All mighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. _ Page 10
