Tell them to put their hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question. Award team 10 points if the person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. Review True or false: David and the people of Israel were in a time of war. (False, God had given His people peace) What did David want to do for God? (build Him a temple) True or false: Nathan told David he could build God a temple. (Both! Nathan said David could do what was on his heart, but God told Nathan to tell David a different message) Who would build God a temple? (David s son) How did David respond to God s promise? (He went to the tabernacle and prayed) How did God keep His promise? (God sent Jesus as a descendant of David to be King forever) Say: Jesus is our king forever. Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: Jesus is our king forever. 5:20 5:25 UNIT MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. *Use the Memory Verse sheet located in the teacher aid section of the bin. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: The Quiet Game Invite preschoolers to play the quiet game. Form two teams. Explain that each team will try to be as quiet as possible for as long as possible. If an adult leader hears a team member make a sound, the other team is declared the winner. Play multiple times as time allows. Say: Ah, the quiet game is a very peaceful game. In our Bible story today, God gave His people a time of peace. David was the king of Israel, and there were no battles to be fought. Everyone was happy. Gospel Project Unit 10.5

The Gospel Project: 10.4 Elementary MC Guide God made a Covenant with David Bible Passage: 2 Samuel 7 Main Point: Jesus is our King forever Memory Verse: 1 Timothy 6:15 Lesson: Go over Classroom Rules: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: Let s take a look at our timeline. A few weeks ago, we learned that God s people, the Israelites, demanded a king. Can anyone tell me who was Israel s first king? (God chose Saul as Israel s first king.) But then, God rejected Saul as king. Why did God reject Saul as king? (God rejected Saul as king because of his sin.) Saul did not stop being king right away, but God did show the prophet Samuel who was going to be king next. Samuel anointed David to be Israel s next king. David fought Goliath, and God gave David power to defeat Goliath. David became popular, and King Saul was jealous. Saul wanted to kill David, but Saul s son, Jonathan, was David s friend. God used Jonathan to save David s life. Today we will hear what happened next: God Made a Covenant with David. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: Jesus is our King forever! Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! The king of Israel would always be someone from David s family, but best of all God said Jesus would be part of David s family. Show MainPoint (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Application: Let s watch our discussion starter video and see what it might have to do with our story. Show MainPoint Let s review our Main Point one more time. (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Dismiss kids to class: Bible Story: Video God Made a Covenant with David 2 Samuel 7 God chose David to be king of Israel, and God gave His people a time of peace. One day, David was talking with Nathan the prophet. David said, I live in a palace of nice cedar wood. But the ark of God sits inside a tent! It hardly seemed fair. Shouldn t God have a nicer house than I do? David wanted to build a temple for the ark of God. He told Nathan his plans. God is with you. Do what you want! Nathan said. But God did not want David to do whatever he wanted. God wanted David to do what God wanted. That night, God gave Nathan a message for David. This is what God told Nathan to say to David: David, are you going to build a house for Me to live in? Think about what I have done for My people. I brought them out of Egypt. I gave them leaders to guide them. The entire time I have been with them, My house has been a tent. Did I ever ask anyone to build a temple for Me? You used to be a shepherd, David. Don t you remember? But I made you a king. I helped you defeat your enemies, and My people now live peacefully in their own land. I promise you, David, that you and your descendants will be kings. When you die, one of your sons will be king. He will be a strong king, and no one will be able to take his kingdom away from him. He will build a house for Me. I will love him, and I will never leave him. When your son dies, his son will be king. The king will always be someone in your family. Nathan told David everything God said. David went into the tent he had set up for the ark of the Lord. He sat down and prayed. Lord God, I don t deserve anything You have done for me, and You promise to do so much more! God, You are so great! There is no one like You! You chose the Israelites to be Your own people. You rescued them from slavery in Egypt. God, please keep Your promises to me and my descendants. I am confident You will keep Your promises because You are trustworthy. Christ Connection: God promised David that every future king of Israel would come from David s family, and David s kingdom would last forever. God kept His promise by sending His Son, Jesus, to be one of David s descendants. Jesus is our King who will rule over God s people forever.
