TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fiftyday season from the Lord's Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King's chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit--an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn't take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch C

From Your Pastor April 22nd, 2018 Those of us who do not have children can forget that our parish has a school; since 2015 St. Stephen of Hungary School has been part of our parish. This past year has seen a lot of administrative changes at St. Stephen s. This past January, the current principal Caroline Walker tendered her resignation, effective in June. That resignation set into motion a series of steps where we had to form a search committee, review resumes and conduct interviews of candidates. If I have looked a little stressed and preoccupied over the last couple of months, that was definitely part of it. But I have had an excellent Search Committee, which worked with me and with the Archdiocese to vet candidates and move the process along. This past week our two finalists came to St. Stephen for a day long campus visit. They met with faculty, staff, parents and students. We are currently in the process of collecting surveys from members of the school community, and after the Search Committee meets to discuss both candidates, I will make the hire. I foresee, if all goes well, an announcement in early May! Air Conditioning Mike Ward periodically reports on our Air Conditioning drive from the financial point of view. I can speak a bit to the engineering/design dimension of this immense project. Last week the engineers came with their first plans for air conditioning the upper church. It is a difficult task. Our building is solid stone and concrete. You can t pump air conditioning up through the floor; it must be blown out high and fall (as cold air does) down to the floor. We cannot run ducts up through the walls. Everything will have to be on the surface. The original designs the engineers developed were, to say the least, unworkable. After considerable discussion they went back to the drawing board (literally) and will be presenting a better plan to us in early June. First Communion This weekend the children of St. Stephen make their first Communion. Next weekend it will be the children of our religious education program and the Catholic students at the Caedmon School. Congratulations to all our students, their families and friends, as they take this next step in their religious formation! Father Baker
