THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD March 2, 2014 11:00 AS WE GATHER Today marks the turning point from Christmas to Easter. When Jesus shines on the mount, it is the final epiphany of His true, hidden nature before He starts foretelling His disciples about His Passion. The event reminds us of God s appearance on Mt. Sinai, when Moses and the elders ate and drank with Him. Yet it is so other-worldly that Peter has to affirm its validity in no uncertain terms to his readers. Our Lord s glory is unseen to human eyes today, but we hear Him in His Word and see Him by faith especially in the Lord s Supper, which strengthens us during difficult times. RINGING OF THE BELLS - We Prepare our hearts and minds for worship PRE-SERVICE Come and See LeBlanc BOB 36 Come and see the glory of the Lord, come, behold the Lamb. Come and see the mercy of the King, bowing down before Him. Come and give thanks unto the Lord. Come, behold the Lamb. Come and sing the praises of the King, bowing down before Him. For He is Lord above the heavens, Lord in all the earth. Lord of all the angels, worthy to be served. Alleluia, Alleluia. REPEAT SONG Lord. WELCOME OPENING SONG Glory To God Forever Fee/Beeching Before the world was made, before You spoke it to be, You were the King of kings - yeah, You were, yeah You were! And now, You're reigning still, enthroned above all things; Angels and saints cry out, we join them as we sing: Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God forever! Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God forever! (Interlude) Creator, God, You gave me breath, so I could praise Your great and matchless name all my days, all my days! So, let my whole life be a blazing offering A life that shouts and sings the greatness of our King! CHORUS Take my life, and let it be all for You, and for Your glory; Take my life and let it be Yours. Take my life and let it be all for You, and for Your glory; Take my life and let it be Yours. We sing: CHORUS 1

Lord, have mercy, set me free. O forgive me, Lord, I pray And take my sin away By the cross and empty grave for my soul. I confess to you, O Lord, that I have sinned. I confess to you, O Lord, all my sin within. I have placed myself above And have hurt the ones I love And I know that only you can set me free. CHORUS Take us back to the water; wash away our sins. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please Be Seated) 3

OLD TESTAMENT Exodus 24:8 18 (The Lord meets Moses and the elders on Mt. Sinai.) [8] And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words." [9] Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, [10] and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. [11] And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. [12] The Lord said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." [13] So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. [14] And he said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them." [15] Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. [16] The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. [17] Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. [18] Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 2:6 12; antiphon: v.6 (The Reign of the LORD s Anointed) All: All: As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill. I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to Me, You are My Son; today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your heritage, and the ends of the earth Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill. 4

EPISTLE 2 Peter 1:16 21 (Peter asserts the truth of his seeing Jesus transfiguration.) [16] For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. [17] For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," [18] we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. [19] And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, [20] knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. [21] For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please Stand) HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 17:1 9 (Jesus is transfigured on the mountain.) The Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew, the seventeenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. [1] And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. [2] And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. [3] And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. [4] And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." [5] He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." [6] When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. [7] But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." [8] And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. [9] And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED LSB 159 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SONG OF THE DAY Revelation Song Riddle Worthy is the Lamb who was slain; Holy, Holy, is He. Sing a new song to Him who sits on heaven's mercy seat. REPEAT Holy, Holy, Holy Is the Lord God Almighty. Who was and is and is to come; With all creation I sing: Praise to the King of Kings! You are my everything, And I will adore You! Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder. Blessing and honor, strength and glory and power be. To You the only wise King. Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder, at the mention of Your name; Jesus, Your Name is power, breath, and living water; such a marvelous mystery. CHORUS CHORUS X2 SERMON (Please Stand) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us reflect on today s psalm as we pray for ourselves and the Church around the world, for the nations of this earth, and for all people in their various needs and conditions. Sovereign Lord, You promised Your Son to make the nations [His] heritage (Psalm 2:8a). Raise up wise and compassionate rulers who will guide nations into the ways of peace across their borders and justice for all who live within them. Grant to Your Church around the world freedom to proclaim the Gospel without fear and courageous leaders to witness to Your grace and love. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Lord over all, You gave Your Son the ends of the earth [as His] possession (Psalm 2:8b). Grant wisdom to all who care for Your good earth. Through their efforts may the world reflect Your creative power and may the people of this planet be fed abundantly. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. You urge us all to serve the LORD with fear (Psalm 2:11). O Holy Spirit, as You have given various gifts to Your people, so provide guidance and opportunity for Your people to use these gifts for the good of all. Bless those who tend the soil, who care for the sick, who employ the arts, who defend the nation, who keep the peace, who oversee commerce, who produce needed goods, and who build and maintain homes and schools, bridges and businesses. May we all rejoice to serve You together. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Lord our God, the psalmist proclaimed, Blessed are all who take refuge in [Your Son] (Psalm 2:12). Hear and bless those near and dear to us who call out to You in their distress of body, mind, or spirit [including]. Heal the sick, comfort the mourning, relieve the impoverished, calm the troubled, and bring them to days of rejoicing as fits Your gracious plans for them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. 6
