September 10, 2017 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.

Order of Worship Welcome and greetings Joe Donnovin, ruling elder * Call to worship 1 Chronicles 29:10b-13 Leader: Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. All: Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Leader: Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. All: In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. * Hymn of praise This Is My Father s World This is my Father s world, and to my list ning ears, all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father s world: I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father s world, the birds their carols raise, the morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker s praise. This is my Father s world: he shines in all that s fair; in the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father s world, O let me ne er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father s world: the battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav n be one. words by Maltbie D. Babcock, 1901 * Prayer of adoration Affirmation of faith The Heidelberg Catechism, question one Leader: What is your only comfort in life and in death?

All: That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Call to confession taken from Psalm 28 and Hebrews 10 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Therefore, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience. Hymn of confession Jesus Paid It All I hear the Savior say, Your strength indeed is small, child of weakness, watch and pray, find in me your all in all. Refrain: Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe; sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow. Lord, now indeed I find your power, and yours alone, can change the leper s spots, and melt the heart of stone. Refrain And when, before the throne, I stand in him complete, Jesus died my soul to save, my lips shall still repeat. Refrain words by Elvina M. Hal, 1865 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from Romans 8 There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

* Hymn of assurance Beneath the Cross of Jesus Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty Rock within a weary land; (men: the shadow in a weary land) a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, (men: a home of rest, upon the way) from the burning of the noon-tide heat and the burden of the day. Upon that cross of Jesus my eyes at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me: (men: the very dying One for me) and from my smitten heart with tears two wonders I confess, (men: and from my heart I confess) the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place: I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; (men: I ask, no other than his face) content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss, (men: content to know no gain nor loss) my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross, my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross. words by Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1872 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men; from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; thou savest those that on thee call; to them that seek thee thou art good, to them that find thee all in all. Our restless spirits yearn for thee where er our changeful lot is cast; glad when thy gracious smile we see, blessed when our faith can hold thee fast. O Jesus ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away, shed o er the world thy holy light. words by Bernard of Clairvaux, ca. 1150

* Scripture reading from Mark 1:21-28 Cy Huffman (9:30) text printed in the bulletin David Paschall (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon The Authority of Jesus Brian Salter, associate pastor Pastoral prayer * Hymn of response Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder * Benediction * Doxology * Postlude Let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior s name, he has hushed the law s loud thunder, he has quenched Mount Sinai s flame, he has washed us with his blood (3x), he has brought us nigh to God. Let us love the Lord who bought us, pitied us when enemies, called us by his grace and taught us; gave us ears and gave us eyes, he has washed us with his blood (3x), he presents our souls to God. Let us sing though fierce temptation threatens hard to bear us down, for the Lord, our strong salvation, holds in view the conqueror s crown. He who washed us with his blood (3x), soon will bring us home to God. Let us praise and join the chorus of the saints enthroned on high; here they trusted him before us, now their praises fill the sky: Thou hast washed us with thy blood (3x), thou art worthy, Lamb of God! words by John Newton, 1774 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Congregation standing as you are able

Mark 1:21-28 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God! 25 Be quiet! said Jesus sternly. Come out of him! 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, What is this? A new teaching and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him. 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

SERMON NOTES The Authority of Jesus Mark 1:21-28 1. Listen up: all things must submit to his teaching. (vv. 21-22) 2. Cheer up: all things must submit to his power. (vv. 23-28) BIG IDEA: Jesus authority brings conviction and comfort in all things.
