Feeding the Multitudes and 4000 Matthew 16:5-12: (NASB) 5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 And Jesus said to them, Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, He said that because we did not bring any bread. 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? 10 Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? 11 How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 12 Then they understood that he did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 1

Matthew 14:13-15, Mark 6:32-36, Luke 9:12: (NASB) Now when Jesus heard about John, he withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed him on foot from the cities. When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy food for themselves and find lodging. 3

When he went ashore The opportunity of the Gospel was immediate. No other prophet of God was on the scene at this time; just Jesus and the people waiting to be fed. like sheep without a shepherd Israel was without a shepherd. In Matthew 10:6, Jesus said: but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. this place is desolate Strongs #2048: an uncultivated region but fit for pasturage; uninhabited go into the surrounding countryside buy food The people could have gone to their local communities to find "food," but it would be food from the Pharisees that was not good for them. They could lodge within the community of the Law that surrounded them. 4

Mark 8:1 3: (NASB) 1 In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples and said to them, 2 I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with me now three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance. again a large crowd Just like in the feeding of the 5,000 three days They must have had just enough of their own provisions to get them to this point. Reminder of Cornelius in Acts 10:4? come from a great distance What greater distance to have traveled than from Paganism and how appropriate that the further from Christ they would travel, the more likely they would faint. 6

Mark 6:37-38, Matt 14:16, John 6:5-7: (NASB) But he said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread? They do not need to go away; You give them something to eat! This he was saying to test him, for he himself knew what he was intending to do. Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little. And he said to them, How many loaves do you have? Go look! 7

Where are WE to buy bread? Jesus isn't orchestrating this individually, but instead he includes the Apostles in the question. Philip's response seems a natural reaction - we cannot afford it! $$$$$$ How many loaves do you have? It isn't our ability to shoulder the expense, but instead a willingness to pass on that which nourishes us the bread of life. Jesus is teaching them to walk away from the money and towards the preparedness of the bread. Go look! How could they have known they weren't supposed to focus on the money? Jesus was showing them step by step how to clear their minds of what was and accept what was now to be. Matthew 15:33-34: (NASB) 33 The disciples said to him, Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd? 34 And Jesus said to them, How many loaves do you have? And they answer 8

The Apostles learned! When it came time to later feed the 4,000, notice they do not mention money... they are already focused on the bread, the bread of life! this desolate place Strongs #2048 Literally, a wasteland. Isn't that appropriate for where the Gentiles would be to receive the bread of life? How many loaves do you have? What he was really asking: What feeds you that you have to feed them? The Apostles would have to give the Gentiles what the Apostles themselves had been given - not based on the Law, not based on money, not based on what was, but on what was to come. Gospel as applied to Jewish Christians --Solitary place with green grass growing Gospel as applied to Gentile Christians --Desolate place, a wasteland --Apostles didn t understand the preparation --Apostles didn t really understand what Jesus meant --Apostles understood how to prepare --Apostles ready to move forward, even though they could not do it without Jesus 5,000 4,000 9

John 6:8-9: (NASB) 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, 9 There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people? lad with five loaves They did not have what was necessary to feed the multitudes! Perhaps a picture of Jesus himself in his innocence being prepared, a young man being about his Father's business. Perhaps to remind us of another young man, David, who with only five smooth stones, saved Israel. two fish Perhaps the Old and New Testaments? The Law and the Prophets? What are these for so many? How could Israel be given spiritual food from such humble and insignificant beginnings? By the grace of God and by the miracles of God through Jesus. 11

Matthew 15:34:...Seven (loaves), and a few small fish. seven loaves First feeding was from five loaves - now seven - representing spiritual perfection. The perfect amount was supplied to be multiplied for ample provision for the entire Gospel Age. This time the disciples had the provisions on hand. They had been given the ability to understand that what they had been given, they were to now be giving. They didn't know how it would actually work, but they trusted Jesus to make it happen without question. The spirit and the kingdom were now in their hands, and they were now prepared for the Gospel miracle to work through their seemingly small store. 12

few small fish Siniatic = 2 fish 13

John 6:10, Luke 9:14, Mark 6:39-40: (NASB) Jesus said to his disciples, Have the people sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each. Now there was much grass in the place. And he commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass. They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. fifty groups of hundreds and fifties Numerically organized, like the Law, implemented with precision. Israel was always recognized by tribe. green grass They were in a place where lost sheep could find pasture. Preparing the people was putting them in the place where they could be fed. 50 100 50 14

Matthew 15:35: (NASB) And he directed the people to sit down on the ground; to sit down on the ground No grass, just barren ground of a waste and desolate place. Jesus had already proclaimed your house was left unto you desolate Here the Law of Liberty reigns, yet still under the command of Jesus. All commanded to sit, but with no real pattern expressed. 15

Mark 6:41, John 6:11: (NASB) And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, he blessed the food and having given thanks broke the loaves and he kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and he divided up the two fish among them all as much as they wanted. Matthew 15:36: (NASB) 36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, he broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. Mark 8:6-7: (NASB) 6... and taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to his disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people. 7 They also had a few small fish; and after he had blessed them, he ordered these to be served as well. 16

and 4000 Jesus blesses and gives thanks in both accounts. Blessing: Strongs #2127 to consecrate a thing with solemn prayers Giving thanks: to be grateful When we look at Jesus at the institution of the Memorial, we see both of these happening. Luke 22:19: (NASB) And when he had taken some bread and given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Matthew 26:26-27: (NASB) While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, he broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And when he had taken a cup and given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; 17

and 4000 With both the feeding of the 5000 and the 4000, with the same consecration of the bread and the fish that was attributed to his own body and with the same thanksgiving of the bread and the fish that was attributed to his own body and blood; the feeding on the true bread of life could, in both cases, begin. It is the same because it is the same calling. There are two different parts of the exact same calling. and 4000 For the high calling, whether to the Jews first or the Gentiles second, the call to be fed remains the same, only separated by time the first relative to the physical presence of Jesus and his Apostles and the second through those who would later take up the cause of Christ - the Apostles and then the messengers. 18

John 6:12, Mark 6:43, Matthew 14:21: (NASB) When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost. So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves and also of the fish which were left over by those who had eaten. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. 19

they were filled The Gospel satisfies! Gather the leftover fragments Showing the framework of the immediate future of the Gospel the giving of the Gospel to the Jewish nation - all in the personal hands of the 12. twelve baskets The 12 Apostles (Reprints 3504, 2435 and 2644). All 12 baskets were filled, giving us a clear picture of the responsibility that those 12 would have after Jesus death. They would personally carry and spread the Gospel. They had here observed and participated in the miracle and now Jesus would assign them to go forward and feed others. Mark 8:8, Matthew 15:38: (NASB) And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 20

and were satisfied The Gospel also satisfies the Gentiles! they picked up Not focused on the 12 Apostles; perhaps all now would be doing the work, showing the diminishing reliance on just the 12 as time would expand the Gospel s reach beyond their physical reach. seven large baskets Not those of the Apostles. How large were these baskets? Only other use of the word: Acts 9:25: (NASB) but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket. Big enough to fit a man! Very different from what the Apostles would have had to carry around with them. seven large baskets Seven messengers the size of these baskets tells us that what was left would have to last a long time 2,000 years of systematic distribution to the church. By definition each basket would have to be larger. 21

Who ate? Matthew 14:21: (NASB) There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. Specific number PLUS lots of others Matthew 15:38: (NASB) And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. Specific number PLUS lots of others CHURCH AND GREAT COMPANY? Matthew 13:18-23: (NASB) 18 Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 22

The sown seed in the thorny place does not die, it produces a plant. The plant lives, though it is unfruitful...perhaps this is not bearing the fruit of spirituality that would have otherwise brought you to true faithfulness. Showing that some ate to full maturity as men while others were not of the number to be counted.. The call, having gone out to the Jews and Gentiles, produced the same type of result. The call of the church in its entirety Trial and development of the church Matthew 25:1-4: Five of the 10 virgins were faithful After Pentecost, 3,000 + 2,000 were converted= 5,000 40 day or 40 year period of testing: Moses, Israel, Jesus Time of testing 100-fold = 4,000 Full Gospel Age Picture 5,000 4,000 23

Full Gospel Age Picture 5,000 The call of the WHOLE CHURCH begins with Israel presented by Jesus and the Apostles 4,000 The trial and development of the WHOLE CHURCH expands to the Gentiles on the shoulders of seven messengers providing meat in due time 24

John 6:14-15, Matthew 14:22-24: (NASB) Therefore when the people saw the sign which he had performed, they said, This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world. So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take him by force to make him king, sent the crowds away. After he had sent the crowds away, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray; and when it was evening, he was there alone. But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. make him king Israel longed for deliverance by their Messiah. sent the crowds away Jesus had to complete his mission and be glorified first. by himself to pray Having been faithful and having taught the 12, sending them on their journey through the restless masses of humanity. 25

Matthew 14:27-33: (NASB) 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid. 28 Peter said to him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. 29 And he said, Come! And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and took hold of him, and said to him, you of little faith, why did you doubt? 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, you are certainly God s Son! When they got in the boat, the wind stopped In that dark night, he would walk on the water, meet and calm his followers, and then get in the boat with them and calm their storm. 26

Matthew 15:39 and Mark 8:10: (NASB) And sending away the crowds, immediately he entered the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Magadan. sending away the crowds No desire for a king no need to change their focus. Just a sending of each to their own life so the Gospel could now be spread through them. he entered the boat with his disciples The end result of both miracles is that Jesus ends up in the boat with his disciples! 27

Matthew 28:16-20: (NASB) 16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. 28

Matthew 7:24-27: (NASB) 24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell and great was its fall. The Lesson for us: The Gospel first went to Israel, but they would reject him. The plan must be completed, so the call went to the Gentiles. 5,000 + 4,000 shows two different parts: 1) The time of Jesus and the Apostles until Cornelius; 2) the call to the Gentiles. End result: They are fed, cared for, provided for by the 12 baskets and the 7 baskets, and Jesus stays in the boat with them. 29

The Lesson for us: The Lord is still in the boat with us. Our work is not yet complete. Let us be fed by the bread of life, but don t stop there. Let it nourish us so that we can feed others. Feeding the Multitudes 30
