THE CALIFORNIA ENCOMPASSER IS THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE GRAND YORK RITE BODIES OF CALIFORNIA AND IS PUBLISHED QUARTERLY FOR THE INFORMATION OF THE MEMBERSHIP. THE ENCOMPASSER IS TO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE MEMBERSHIP AT ALL CONVOCATIONS, ASSEMBLiES AND CONCLAVES OF THE YORK RITE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA Vol. 23 February 2008 No. 1 Early York Rite in the United States Freemasonry in the United States of America has an unusual early history. Imported from Europe - England, Ireland, Scotland, France, and Germany - it quickly became one of the most important colonial organizations. It remained an exclusive organization through the revolution, and began expanding its membership base into the middle class. Masonic historians have safely set 1730 as the date of the beginning of American Masonry. Whatever Masonic meetings may have been held before 1730 they were not recorded. Although activity after 1730 rapidly increased and is documented. Traveling British military Lodges spread Masonry through much of North America as they initiated civilians in towns where they were stationed. Royal Arch The first high degree to appear in America was the Royal Arch Degree first recorded in December 1753 at Fredericksburg Lodge in Virginia. The degree began to spread through the colonies. The earliest Chapters were: 1758 - Jerusalem Chapter in Philadelphia 1769 - St. Andrew s Chapter, Boston 1790 - Cyrus Chapter, Newburyport, Mass. 1792 - A Chapter in Charleston, SC 1793 - Harmony Chapter, Philadelphia In 1795 the first Grand Chapter was organized in Pennsylvania, and on October 24, 1797 the first national American organization was created in the General Grand Chapter of the New England States, which is today the General Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons International. Cryptic Council The Degrees of Royal & Select Master seem to have originated as side degrees available from itinerant Masonic lecturers. They are known collectively as the Cryptic Degrees, or the Cryptic Rite. The Secret Master Degree was conferred at Charleston, SC, in 1783, and the Royal Master Degree in New York City in 1804. In 1810 the degrees became permanently associated together with the formation of Columbia Grand Council of Royal & Select Masters in NYC - even though Grand is in the name, the body was only local. The earliest Councils were: 1810 - New York City 1815 - New Hampshire 1817 - Massachusetts, Virginia, Vermont 1818 - Rhode Island, Connecticut By 1830 there were Grand Councils in 10 states. Under the influence of the well known ritualist Jeremy Ladd Cross s Chart and other monitors, the Select Master s Degree came to be viewed as the culmination of American Craft Masonry, even if Councils were found in only a few metropolitan areas and their degrees available to only a few. The General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons International was organized on August 23, 1890 and is the ruling body. It all started in 1730 and the later growth of the Royal Arch and then eventually Cryptic Degrees was probably what lead to the superstructure of the American York Rite system consisting of the Craft Lodge, the Royal Arch Chapter, the Royal & Select Council, and the Knight Templar Commandery.

Vatican to Publish Documents on Suppression of Knights Templar The Vatican is planning publication of a book on the suppression of the Knights Templar, based on material from the Vatican Secet Archives. The Knights Templar, a religious order established in Jerusalem in 1118, grew in power during the Crusades, becoming a formidable military and political force in Europe in the 12th and 13th century. In the early 14th century, under pressure from the French monarchy, Pope Clement V forcibly suppressed the order. However, rumors about the secrets of the military order have been circulated for centuries. Knights Templar has figured in a number of recent fictional works. The new work to be published by the Vatican Archives is unlikely to stem the curiosity of conspiracy theorists. On October 25, 2007 the Vatican office of the Secret Archives will unveil the book, Processus contra Templarios, containing "a previously unpublished and exclusive edition of the complete acts of the original hearing against the Knights Templar," the Vatican has announced. Containing reproductions of the original parchment documents, the book is "the most elaborate and important publication yet undertaken" by the Archives, the Vatican states. The book will be a special collector's edition, with only 799 copiesproduced.

Page 8 THE CALIFORNIA ENCOMPASSER Early History of the GRAND COMMANDERY OF CALIFORNIA Pursuant to previous agreement, the representatives of the three Commanderies of Knights Templar and the Appendant Orders existing in the State of California under Charters from the Grand Encampment of the United States of America, assembled in the Asylum of San Francisco Commandery, No. 1, at the City of San Francisco, on Tuesday, the 10 th day of August, A.D. 1858, A.O. 740, at twelve o clock, M., for the purpose of organizing a Grand Commandery of Knights Templar and the Appendant Orders for the State of California. Sir Alex G. Abell, Commander of San Francisco Commandery, No. 1, stated the object of the Convocation; upon his motion Sir Isaac Davis, Commander of Sacramento Commandery, No. 2, was invited to preside during the deliberations. On motion of Sir John S. Graham, Commander of Pacific Commandery, No. 3, Sir Alex G. Abell was appointed Recorder of the Convocation. On motion by Sir Leander Ransom, Past Commander of San Francisco Commandery, No. 1, it was ordered that a committee of three be appointed to examine the credentials of those claiming seats in this convocation. After a brief recess, that committee presented the following report: On the 10 th of November, 1852, a dispensation was issued by Sir Charles W. Moore, General Grand Generalissimo of the General Grand Encampment of the United States, to Sir Gregory Yale, Grand Commander, Sir William B. Wakeman, Generalissimo, Sir Abram Barton, Captain General, and other Knights therein named, authorizing them to open and hold an Encampment of Knights Templar and the Appendant Orders in the City of San Francisco, to be known and designated San Francisco Encampment, No.1. That body held its first assembly and was duly organized on the twenty-second day of December of the year; and on the first day of November, 1853, a Charter was granted to it by the General Grand Encampment. On the twenty-third day of May, 1853 a Dispensation was issued by Sir William B. Hubbard, General Grand Master of the General Grand Encampment aforesaid, to Sir Isaac Davis, Grand Commander, Sir Jesse Morrill, Generalissimo, Sir Townsend A. Thomas, Captain General, and other Knights therein named, authorizing them to open and hold a like Encampment in the City of Sacramento, to be known and designated as Sacramento Encampment No. 2. That body held its first assembly and was duly organized on the fifth day of July, of the same year; and on the sixth day of February, 1854, a Charter was granted to it by the Gen- by Gary Miller, Deputy Grand Commander eral Grand Encampment. On the twentieth day of February, 1856, a Dispensation was issued by Sir William B. Hubbard, General Grand Master of the General Grand Encampment aforesaid, to Sir John S. Graham, Grand Commander, Sir Stillman H. Fickett, Generalissimo, Sir James W. Marshall, Captain General, and other Knights therein named, authorizing them to open and hold a like Encampment in the City of Columbia to be known and designated as Pacific Encampment, No. 3. That body held it first assembly and was duly organized on the twenty-seventh day of May next ensuing; and on the tenth day of September of the same year, a Charter was granted to it by the General Grand Encampment." All these bodies, now known as Commanderies, appear to have held their elections regularly since the receipt of their several Charters; to have had their officers duly installed; to have been uninterruptedly engaged in the performance of the duties for which they were instituted; and they are now properly represented in this Convocation as follows: there were listed 4 knights from San Francisco No.1, 3 knights from Sacramento No.2, and 3 knights from Pacific No. 3. On motion by Sir Alex G. Abell, all Knights Templar in good standing were invited to be present during the deliberations of the Convocation. By direction of the Presiding Officers, a copy of a petition transmitted to the Grand Master of the Order was read by the Recorder as follows: ### To the Most Eminent Wm. G. Hubbard, Grand Master of Knights Templar in the United States: The petition of the undersigned, officers of the three (Encampments) Commanderies of Knights Templar now existing in the State of California, under Charter from the (General) Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States of America, respectfully sheweth: That on the first day of November, A.D. 1853, San Francisco (Encampment) Commandery, No.1, held in the City of San Francisco, was chartered by the above named (General) Grand Body; that on the sixth day of February, A. 1854, Sacramento (Encampment) Commandery, No. 2, held in the city of Sacramento, was chartered by the same (General) Grand body; that on the tenth day of September, A.D. 1856, Pacific (Encampment) Commandery, No. 3, held in the city of Columbia was chartered by the Same Supreme Body; and that since the reception of those several charter, the three (Encampments) Commanderies above named, Contiued on Page 9

THE CALIFORNIA ENCOMPASSER Page 9 having had their officers duly installed, have been regularly and constantly at work under the said authority, and have endeavored in all things to comply with the Constitution and Regulations of the (General) Grand Encampment of the United States, and to promote the interests and further the proper extension of Christian chivalry within their respective jurisdictions. The petition of the undersigned further sheweth: That it is believed that the good of the Order in this State, and the convenience of its members, will be greatly consulted and promoted by the establishment of a Grand Commandery; and, as each of the Commanderies before named have, at different times since the reception of their several charters, adopted resolutions expressive of their ardent desire for the formation of such a Grand Body, the undersigned, the regularly elected and installed officers of these bodies, promising obedience to the Grand Master and the Grand Encampment, in all things appertaining to the Order, respectfully request that you will issue your warrant, authorizing the establishment and continuance of a Grand Commandery of Knights Templar for the State of California. ### The three presiding officers of the three Commanderies then signed the petition. It was sent from San Francisco, April 20, A.D. 1858, A.O. 740. The Recorder also read the Warrant received from the Most Eminent Grand Master in response to the foregoing, as follows: ### Office of the Grand Master of Knights Templar Of the United States of America To all True and Courteous Knights of our Order: Know Ye, That whereas there are now established and existing three Commanderies in the State of California, holding their authority from the Grand Encampment of the United States, and working under its jurisdiction, to wit: San Francisco Commandery No. 1, Sacramento Commandery, No. 2, and Pacific Commandery, No. 3; and whereas, on behalf of those several Commanderies, it has been duly certified unto me that they are desirous to form, hold, and maintain a Grand Commandery in and for the said Stated of California, subordinate to the Grand Encampment of the United States of America; therefore, I, W.B. Hubbard, Grand Master as aforesaid, being satisfied that such request is reasonable and proper, by virtue of the high powers in me vested, and in accordance with the Constitution and Rules of our Order, do hereby authorize and empower the aforesaid Commanderies, Nos. 1, 2, and 3, in due order, to meet at such time and place as they may agree upon, and form a State Grand Commandery in and for the said State of California, subordinated to our Grand Encampment. Such State Grand Commandery, when so formed, making due return and report to me of all of their official doings and proceedings in the premises, and making a like return to or V.E. Grand Recorder. And for all of their doings, in accordance with the rules and usages of our Order, in forming such State Grand Commandery, this shall be their Warrant. Given under my hand and private seal, at the City of Columbus, this sixteenth day of May, A.D. 1858, A.O. 740: W. B. Hubbard, G.M. ### The proceedings were adjourned until 3 o clock P.M. The Convocation was assembled at 3 o clock pursuant to adjournment, Sir Isaac Davis presiding. The Statutes having been taken up and considered separately, the blanks were filled, and the whole were unanimously adopted. The officers of the Grand Commandery were then elected: as Grand Commander Sir Isaac Davis; as Deputy Grand Commander Sir Leander Ransom; and as Grand Generalissimo Sir John S. Graham. The Convocation was then adjourned until 8 o clock, P.M. It was again assembled at 8 o clock pursuant to adjournment, Sir Isaac Davis presiding. The election was resumed and the remaining officers were chosen and so listed. The officers were then installed and the Grand Commandery adjourned after it was resolved that the Grand Commandery of the State of California be opened at 10 o clock, A.M. tomorrow, after the reading and approval of the minutes of this day s proceedings. The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar and the Appendant Orders of the State of California commenced its First Conclave at the Asylum in the City of San Francisco, on Wednesday, the eleventh day of August, A.D. 1858, Anno Ordinis 740, at 10 o clock, A.M. Petitions were received from Orville, El Dorado and Marysville, and dispensations were granted. A committee was formed to design a Seal for the Grand Commandery. A petition was presented to change the name of San Francisco Commandery, No.1, and that it hereafter be known as California Commandery, No.1. It was adopted during the afternoon proceedings. Rules of Order for the government of the Grand Commandery in Conclave were unanimously adopted. The By-laws for the subordinate Commanderies were approved and adopted. The sum of $25.00 was ordered paid to the Grand Sentinel for his services during the late Convocation and the present Conclave.
