Mt. Traveler Missionary Baptist Church, Waverly, Alabama Synopses of Sermons Preached by Rev. B. C. Datiri, Pastor THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST March 6, 2011 9. The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts Text: Ephesians 4:7-16 1 As we continue the sermon series on THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, allow me to state that the Church is the body of Christ redeemed through His blood and saved by grace through faith. The Church of Christ is a mystery because it is a group of believers united by their faith in Christ s redemptive work through His blood that breaks all the barriers created by the works and the laws of flesh that do cause divisions in any generation. The book of Ephesians is portrayed as the Church of Christ, that is the united body of Christ; for which Jesus Christ is the Head. And so Ephesians is addressed to a group of believers who are rich beyond measure in Jesus Christ yet living as beggars because they are ignorant of their wealth. In Chapters 4-6, Paul writes about how the Church, especially its individual members, learns his spiritual walk that is rooted in this spiritual wealth. So Paul in the beginning of Ephesians chapter 4 wrote to instruct the Church to walk in unity because it is the united body of Christ that fulfills the purpose of the spiritual gifts. Then in the second half of this Chapter 4 he addressed the issues of Christian conduct concerning morality, money and the mouth. But recall he concluded Ephesians 3 with the fact that the love of God is indescribable and that there is no wealth greater than love. This love of God together with the power of the Holy Spirit combine to humble believers to develop the strongest bond that binds them together to each other into a united body called the Church. Unity is a strong attribute of the Church! As such Paul in his epistles would often remind the Churches about unity and its importance. For instance, he wrote the Church in Rome, For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others (Romans 12:3-5). After emphasizing the importance of walking in unity, Paul addressed the issue of the purpose of Spiritual gifts in Christian unity to equip believers for works of service so as to build the church to become mature and attain the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 2 And so our focus today is "THE CHURCH OF CHRIST The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts". So today s text reads, But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says: When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people. 9 (What does he ascended mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of

people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:7-16). 3 Mt Traveler members, as we conclude this sermon please allow me to reiterate the following points from our text as a summary. The purposes of the Spiritual gifts are: To equip God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. For God s people to be no longer infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. For the Church, the united body of believers, to speak the truth in love and grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ. For the Church, as the whole body, to be joined and held together by every supporting ligament as it grows and builds itself up in love and as each individual member does its work according to his/her spiritual giftedness. And let the Church say, Amen! 4 And so as we conclude this worship experience, allow me to suggest to you that sin is what deprives you from appreciating the godly loving relationships and the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace that we have in Christ. Sin is a chronic disease that deprives you from knowing who you are in Christ Jesus. 5 Therefore we are extending an invitation to anyone who still struggles with this chronic disease, called sin. Repent, and humbly accept Jesus Christ into your heart. Then confess with your mouth your faith in Him that He died and rose again to save you from your sin through the shedding of His blood, and you will be saved. May God bless you as you humbly come either as a candidate for baptism, rededication or as one with Christian experience. Why don t you come as the Choir leads us in a song? 6 And if you are reading this on the Internet why don t you pray asking Jesus Christ to be your Lord and savior, then write and tell us at pastordatiri@mttraveler.org?

Mt. Traveler Missionary Baptist Church, Waverly, Alabama Synopses of Sermons Preached by Rev. B. C. Datiri, Pastor PREACHED AT ANNUAL MEN DAY CELEBRATION, SWEET CANAAN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH, TUSKEGEE, ALABAMA, Rev. Dr. Paul Lawson; Pastor Theme: Strong and Courageous Christian Men Standing for Jesus with Love March 20, 2011 BECOMING MATURE MEN IN THE CHURCH 1Cor. 16:13-14 1. Pray / Acknowledge A. God, Pastor/Ministers, Wife/Pastor s & Ministers Wives, Family/Friends 2. Introduction: o Immature behavior is prevailing in the men of the church in our generation. Why is this so? It is because men in this modern society do not want to apply themselves to learning. Men are full of themselves and hence do not want to sit before teachers to be taught, listen to anyone as a matter of fact and/or will not ask questions hoping that in so doing they will not expose their ignorance. However, their immature behavior often betrays them and exposes their ignorance. God s desire is that men of the Church become mature, full of wisdom and the Holy Spirit so as to become faithful leaders. Wisdom is the application of knowledge that is understood. Wisdom makes us strong and courageous in this pilgrim s journey of Christianity. Dr. Luke informs us in Luke 2 concerning Jesus Christ, And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. 41 Every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you. 49 Why were you searching for me? he asked. Didn t you know I had to be in my Father s house? 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them. 51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:40-52). o To become mature is learning to truly love because God is love. Love eliminates childish behavior when you actually know what it is. Love helps us to avoid childish ways and immature behavior. This is why Paul admonishes in 1 Corinthians 13, If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I

possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me (1Corinthians 13:1-11). o Furthermore, the Scripture for our theme of today encourages us to Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love (1Corinthians 16:13-14). As such the characteristics of a mature Christian man would include but not limited to the following: Knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom He sent. Your thought processes are seasoned because of your transformation by the daily renewal of your mind through daily devotion in the Word. You are humble, always thinking with sober judgment and considering others better than yourself. Being considerate, compassionate and empathetic. Not talking much; a person of few words but full of wisdom because anyone that can control the tongue is mature and can control the whole body. Being vigilant, watchful and alert Standing firm in the faith by being obedient to the word of Truth. Being courageous and strong for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. Does everything in love. Have a philosophy of life that is based on the principles of God s word. As we conclude this worship experience, let me ask you: Are you a strong and courageous mature Christian (man/woman) standing for Jesus with love? But you cannot become a Christian and mature without first being born again. This is because sin is a chronic disease that would prevent you from knowing God in a personal loving relationship as His son or daughter. Therefore we are inviting anybody still struggling with the chronic disease called sin. All you need to do is to repent, accept Jesus into your heart and then confess with your mouth your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that He died and rose again for you to be saved from your sins; and you will be saved. Once you are saved it is your obligation and responsibility to learn to become mature and participate actively in the growth of the local church. The choice is yours to personally make! May God bless you as you humbly come either as a candidate for baptism, rededication or as one with Christian experience. Why don t you come as the Choir leads us in a song? And if you are reading this on the Internet why don t you pray asking Jesus Christ to be your Lord and savior, then write and tell us at pastordatiri@mttraveler.org?

Mt. Traveler Missionary Baptist Church, Waverly, Alabama Synopses of Sermons Preached by Rev. B. C. Datiri, Pastor THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST March 20, 2011 11. Money and the Mouth Text: Ephesians 4:25-32 1. So far in the sermon series on THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, we have learned that the Church is the body of Christ redeemed through His blood and saved by grace through faith. Also, the Church of Christ is a mystery because it is a group of believers united by their faith in Christ s redemptive work through His blood that breaks all the barriers created by the works and the laws of flesh that do cause divisions in any generation. The book of Ephesians is portrayed as the Church of Christ, that is the united body of Christ; for which Jesus Christ is the Head. This Book of Ephesians is addressed to a group of believers who are rich beyond measure in Jesus Christ yet living as beggars because they are ignorant of their wealth. On last Sunday the issue of morality was considered. Rev. Johns ask the questions: where are you pushing the morality issue? Is it to the positive or negative end? Today we are considering the issues of money and the mouth within the Church. The issue of money will always make you open your mouth. In the black Churches the contention usually comes as to who is controlling the money. But be careful because the issues of money and the mouth can make or break the church of Christ. The tongue is described in the book of James to be very dangerous and destructive as fire. The love of money is described in Timothy as the root of all evil. It takes the love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to appropriately manage both money and the mouth to keep the church united as the body of Christ. Unity is a strong attribute of the Church! 2. And so our focus today is "THE CHURCH OF CHRIST Money and the Mouth". Today s text reads, Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 In your anger do not sin : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4:25-32). 3. Mt Traveler members, as we conclude this sermon please allow me to summarize:

We are all members of one body called the church so quit falsehood and speak truthfully to one another. It is okay to be angry but do not let the sun go down in your anger because you will give the devil a foothold of you. Stop stealing from the Church and from God rather work hard to earn money to share with those in need. Please do not open your mouth to talk if you have nothing to say that will build others up according to their needs so as to benefit those who listen. On no account should you grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were for the day of redemption because of the issues of money and the mouth. Please get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Finally, please be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. And let the Church say, Amen! 4. And so as we conclude this worship experience, allow me to suggest to you that sin is what deprives you from appreciating the godly loving relationships and the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace that we have in Christ. Sin is a chronic disease that deprives you from knowing who you are in Christ Jesus that you continue to grieve the Holy Spirit of God in matter of money and the mouth. 5. Therefore we are inviting anyone who still struggles with this chronic disease, called sin. Come, repent, and humbly accept Jesus Christ into your heart. 6. B. C. Datiri, Pastor THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST March 27, 2011 12. Living as Children of Light Text: Ephesians 5:1-20 1. So far in the sermon series on THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, we have learned that the Church is the body of Christ redeemed through His blood and saved by grace through faith. This Book of Ephesians is addressed to a group of believers who are rich beyond measure in Jesus Christ yet living as beggars because they are ignorant of their wealth. In Chapters 4-6, Paul writes about how the Church, especially its individual members, learns his spiritual walk that is rooted in this spiritual wealth. Chapter 4 focused on instructing the Church to walk in unity because it is the united body of Christ that fulfills the purpose of the spiritual gifts with respect to Christian conduct concerning morality, money and the

mouth. Now in Chapter 5 Paul reiterates that the Church is to walk in the Light as it walks in love. 2. What is Light? Just like cold is that absence of heat and death is the absence of life, so is darkness the absence of light. List is good, righteousness and truth. God is Light and in Him there is no darkness whatsoever. Darkness is deceitfulness, evil and foolishness. Church folks can be deceitful, evil and foolish in their action and this is why the unchurched often calls members of the Church of Christ hypocrites. Who then do you think you are deceiving when you are deceitful, unfaithful and manipulatively displaying folly in your actions? Allow me to propose to you Mt Traveler that Christians, the Church of Christ and the body of believers, are those truly born of God. And if God is Light and you are born of God, then you are children of Light. Listen to how the Apostle John puts it in first John 1, God is Light; in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin (1John 1:5-7). If this is the case, why are there so much deceit, evil and folly in the Church of Christ? Why are you deceitful, manipulative, evil and foolish in your thoughts, words and actions? Hey! Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; whatever a man sows that will he also reap. If you sow to the flesh from it you will reap corruption, but if you sow to the Spirit from the Spirit you will reap eternal life (Galatians 6:7-8). The primary responsibility of the Church of Christ is to sow to the Spirit because eternal life is its ultimate goal to attain. Therefore as Children of the Light, the Church of Christ, you must live as Children of Light. And so Paul admonishes in Ephesians 5 that Christians are to be imitators of God as dear children. Walk in love, forgiving one another even as God for Christ s sake has forgiven you so that you can walk in Light. 3. Today s text reads, Follow God s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person such a person is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. 15 Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled

with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:1-20). 4. Mt Traveler members, as we conclude this sermon please allow me to summarize: Be imitators of God, following His example, therefore, as dearly loved children walking in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. There must not be any hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God s holy people. And watch your mouth so that there will be no obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving; since no immoral, impure or greedy person such a person is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Do not allow anyone deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Live as children of light in all goodness, righteousness and truth and expose all fruitless deeds of darkness without any compromises to become visible in the light for these please the Lord. This is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful to live wisely to know and understand the Lord s will for you and make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Do not be foolish get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery (self-indulgence). Instead, be filled with the Spirit, singing and making music from your heart to worship the Lord always for everything God has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. And let the Church say, Amen! 5. If you desire to part of the Church of Christ and walk in the Light then we invite you to come, repent, and humbly accept Jesus Christ into your heart and life. Then confess with your mouth your faith in Him that He died and rose again to save you from your sin through the shedding of His blood, and you will be saved. May God bless you as you humbly come to Him while the Choir leads us in a song? 6.
