COMMUNION We invite all baptized Christians who acknowledge their sinfulness, trust in Christ as their Savior, and who recognize the real presence of Christ s Body and Blood in the bread and wine to join us at the Communion table. The practice of our congregation is to place the bread into the extended hand of the communicant. The wine is offered in both individual cups and the chalice. If you wish to receive it from an individual cup, please take one from the tray as it is offered by the Elder. The cups in the center of the tray are filled with non-alcoholic wine, in consideration of persons who should not drink wine. Also, children who have not received Communion instruction are invited to come to the Communion rail, fold their hands and receive a blessing.

The Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills MISSION FESTIVAL WORSHIP July 22, 2018 PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN Arise, O Church of God Arise! Arise, O Church of God, arise! Bestir thyself, lift up thine eyes. See the nations in commotion. See tumult, warfare, earthquake, flood, Sun turn to darkness, moon to blood! Men s hearts fail them. Fears assail them. Hear their sighing. Souls are dying. Time is flying! Attend, O Church of God, give ear! Thy King commands in accents clear: Spread the tidings of salvation. As once My Father sent me forth, So send I you through all the earth. Rise, delay not. Go and stay not. I who send you will attend you. And defend you. Fail not, O Church of God, to heed The world s sad cry, her anguish, need. If thou bleed not, thou canst bless not. Despise not thou the servant s place. So came thy Lord in matchless grace. Christ most holy served the lowly. Thus He taught us. He who sought us, Loved and bought us. 1

INVOCATION AND CONFESSION As members of Christ s Church on earth we gather together, In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, To celebrate the goodness of God in our lives, To be nurtured in faith and strengthened for service. Let us first confess our failures of the past and hear again the good news of God s gracious forgiveness. Blessed Lord, we humbly acknowledge our sinfulness. We have done what You have forbidden; we have neglected to do what You have commanded. We admit that we often fail to profess our faith, to share our treasure, to show our love. Forgive us, Lord. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Son of God, who died in our place on Calvary s Cross, I announce the gracious forgiveness of all our sins. Now let us go forth to profess boldly and to live joyfully! Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE Arise, O Church of God Arise! Exult, O Church of God, and bless The Lamb, the Lord, our righteousness. His the kingdom, His the power. To Him all laud and glory be Through time and through eternity. Heaven rejoices. Lift your voices. Come before Him, Pray, implore Him. Praise, adore Him! 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, since You have called Your Church to witness to the truth that in Christ You reconciled the world to Yourself, grant that by Your Holy Spirit we may proclaim the Good News of salvation, that all who hear may receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 6:1-8 1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for. 8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

NEW TESTAMENT READING Acts 1:6-11 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE 4

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 9:35-38 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mathew, the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED (inside back cover of the LSB hymnal) CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY I, the Lord of Sea and Sky I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will saved. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send? REFRAIN: Here I am Lord, is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. 5

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have born My peoples pain. I have wept for love of them, They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone. I will speak My word to them, Whom shall I send? REFRAIN I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them, My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide, Till their hearts be satisfied. I will give My life to them. Whom shall I send? REFRAIN SERMON OFFERING Bloom Where You Are Planted Matthew 9:35-38 Rev. Clifford Hellmers, Pastor Emeritus (please register your attendance in the pads located near the center aisle) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Gracious Father, we pray for the heart of our Savior, that we may feel His compassion for those who live with no Shepherd. Lord, give us compassion for lost souls. VOICE: I live in your neighborhood, and I notice what a good neighbor you are; how you go out of your way to help others. It is refreshing, that sort of kindness. I wonder what makes you tick and why more people can t be like you. 6

Help us, Lord, to see how little things said and done can become a living witness to the those who do not know You. Lord, make us faithful witnesses in little things. VOICE: I am in your class at school. I heard you talking about Sunday School out in the hall today. I ve never been to Sunday School. I wonder what it s like. We pray, Father, for the vision to see every program and activity of our church as an avenue of witness. Especially bless, we pray, those who reach out to the young with the Good News of Jesus. Lord, give us zeal to make disciples. VOICE: I am your friend who knows the pain of tragedy. I am afraid. I am not sure what the future holds. Hope for me is just a word. I am alone. Give us courage, Lord, to stand with those who suffer and to speak to them of Christ. Give us the wisdom to bring the Good News to those who have lost hope. Send us, Lord, as witnesses alert to people s needs. VOICE: You have never met me, but once you spoke of Jesus to a friend who knows a friend of mine. That friend spoke of Christ to me. You never guessed, I m sure, that what you said would finally reach me, but it did. I now believe in Jesus as my Savior. I am grateful for waves of witnesses who finally brought the word to me. Eternal Father, for the privilege of being Your witnesses we give You thanks. We thank You, also, for the partnership we have with others in sharing the Gospel. Use us, Lord, that others may know Christ. 7

THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen. DISTRIBUTION From Greenland s Icy Mountains From Greenland s icy mountains to India s coral strand, From Africa s bright fountains to Asia s golden sand. From many an upland river to many a coastal plain, God would the lost deliver from error s evil chain. Our own land s fairest breezes bear sounds of steeple bells, All nature s beauty pleases, yet man build countless hells. In vain with lavish kindness the gifts of God are strown; Throngs turn from Him in blindness to false gods of their own. Can we whose souls are lighted with wisdom from on high, Can we to those benighted the lamp of life deny? Salvation! Oh, salvation! The joyful sound proclaim Till those of every nation have learned Messiah s name.
