Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Jesus Healed a Man s Hand Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11 The Pharisees and scribes were keeping a close eye on Jesus. They watched Him on the Sabbath as He taught in the synagogue. A man there had a paralyzed hand. The religious leaders knew Jesus had power to heal people. They watched to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. According to the law, people should not do work on the Sabbath. Maybe Jesus had been standing before the crowd when He noticed the religious leaders. He was not only aware of their presence, but He knew their thoughts as well. So Jesus called to the man with the paralyzed hand. Stand up here, Jesus said. So the man stood, and Jesus addressed the Pharisees and scribes. Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save a life or to kill? Jesus asked. The religious leaders did not answer. The hardness of their hearts made Jesus sad. They didn t understand God s purpose for the Sabbath. Jesus told the man, Stretch out your hand. The man s hand was healed. The Pharisees and scribes were angry, and they discussed what they might do to Jesus. Jesus distinguished Himself as the Lord of the Sabbath. (See Luke 6:5.) That Jesus is Lord means He has control. Jesus has control over everything. But Jesus hadn t come to get rid of the Sabbath; He wanted to remind the people why God gave them the Sabbath. (See Ex. 20:8-11.) God intended for the Sabbath to be a blessing to His people, a day of rest from their hard work. But the Pharisees made the Sabbath all about following the rules, making the Sabbath a burden instead. The Sabbath is not for our duty but for our delight. Jesus rejected the Pharisees legalism that made it impossible to do anything on the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day to focus on Jesus. In Him, we have rest from striving to be good enough. True rest comes when we trust in Jesus finished work on the cross for our salvation. Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group Welcome time Activity page (5 minutes) Session starter (10 minutes) Key passage activity (5 minutes) Small Group Time Bible story review (10 minutes) Activity choice (10 minutes) Journal (5 minutes) Prayer (5 minutes) THE BIBLE STORY Jesus Healed a Man s Hand Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11 On the Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue. The Sabbath was a special day a holy day set apart for God. God had commanded His people not to do any work on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a day to rest and worship God. Jesus taught the people in the synagogue. One of the men there was unable to move his right hand; it was paralyzed. Pharisees and teachers of the law were also in the synagogue, and they watched Jesus carefully. They wondered if Jesus was going to heal the man s hand. These leaders wanted to see what Jesus would do so they could accuse Him of doing something wrong. Is it OK to heal people on the Sabbath? the leaders asked. Jesus gave the leaders an example. Maybe they could figure out the answer themselves. Jesus said, If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a ditch on the Sabbath, wouldn t you grab the sheep and lift it out of the ditch? Of course a man wouldn t leave the sheep lying in the ditch; sheep were property, and no man would want to let his sheep get hurt or die. Then Jesus said, A man is much more important than a sheep, so it is right to do good on the Sabbath. Jesus knew that the leaders were hoping to accuse Him of doing the wrong thing, so he called out to the man with the paralyzed hand. Stand up here where everyone can see you. Then Jesus said to the man, Stretch out your hand. So the man stretched out his hand. He had not been able to move it before, but now his right hand was just as good as his left. But instead of being happy for the man or praising God for giving Jesus the power to heal, the Pharisees and teachers of the law were angry! They left the synagogue and talked among themselves, planning how they might kill Jesus. Christ Connection: Jesus showed that God s laws were meant to help people, not to hurt them. Jesus acted in love, even on the Sabbath. The religious leaders planned to kill Jesus. They did not Unit 26 Session 6 Younger Elementary 2

Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group know Jesus was going to die to show God s love to the whole world. God provided forgiveness and salvation through Jesus death on the cross. SMALL GROUP OPENING Session Title: Jesus Healed a Man s Hand Bible Passage: Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11 Big Picture Question: What did Jesus miracles prove? Jesus miracles proved that He is the Son of God. Key Passage: John 20:30-31 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus miracles demonstrated His divine authority. Welcome time: Arriving Activity: Daily life long sheet of paper markers tape Place a long sheet of paper on the floor or secure it to the wall. Write the days of the week across the top. As the kids arrive, invite them to write or draw something they do each day of the week under that day s heading. When they finish, invite them to trace their hands around the outside portion of the sheet. Say On what days do you rest? What days do you worship God? God told His people to set aside one day for rest and worship. In Jesus time, some people took that to mean that you couldn t do anything else, even good things, on that day. We will see what Jesus had to say about that in today s Bible story. Activity page (5 minutes) Hands Down activity page, 1 per kid pencils Guide boys and girls to complete the activity page. Say In today s Bible story, Jesus met a man who couldn t use his right hand. Some people thought Jesus shouldn t heal the man. We will find out why. Unit 26 Session 6 Younger Elementary 3

Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group Session starter (10 minutes) Option 1: Handshake From groups of two or more kids and invite them to come up with their own special handshake. Explain that it should involve at least three moves. For example, a traditional handshake, followed by a high five, and then a fist bump. The only rule is that each move must somehow involve using one or both hands. Allow time for the kids to share their handshakes with others in the room. Say A handshake is just one way we use our hands. Imagine not being able to use one of your hands. We will learn about a man who lived without the use of one of his hands until the day he met Jesus. Option 2: Foot ball balloon or small ball Invite the kids to form a circle and lie on their backs. Give one of the kids a balloon or a small ball. Encourage the kids to pass the ball to their right or left using only their feet. They may struggle at first but will get better as they try it a few times. If you have several kids, make it competitive by forming two or more circles. Let the kids race to see which group can pass the balloon around the circle fastest. Say Do you think this would be easier if you used your hands? What if you couldn t use your hands? We will learn about a man who couldn t use one of his hands. Then he met Jesus. SMALL GROUP LEADER Session Title: Jesus Healed a Man s Hand Bible Passage: Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11 Big Picture Question: What did Jesus miracles prove? Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group Key passage activity (5 minutes) Key Passage Slide or Poster dry erase board and markers (optional) paper pencils or pens Make sure the key passage, John 20:30-31, is visible for each child, either as the printed poster or written on a dry erase board. Read the verses together. Say Jesus performed miracles so people would understand that He is the Son of God. Jesus wanted them to believe in and trust in Him so they can be forgiven of their sins and live forever with God in heaven. Provide each kid with a piece of paper and a pencil or pen. Encourage them to write the key passage from memory. See who can write it the quickest and who can write it the most accurately. Then invite each kid to put the pencil in his other hand and write it again on the back of the piece of paper. If you have kids who cannot write yet, invite them to recite the key passage while looking at the poster, and then with their hands over their eyes. Bible story review (10 minutes) Bibles, 1 per kid Small Group Visual Pack Big Picture Question Slide or Poster Encourage the kids to find Matthew 12:9-14 in their Bibles. Help them as needed. Say The Book of Matthew is part of the Gospels division of the Bible. This Bible story is also located in two other books of the Bible. Do you know which ones? (Mark, Luke) The Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are all part of the Gospels. Two of these men were Jesus disciples. Does anyone know which two? (Matthew, John) Use the small group visual pack to show kids where today s Bible story is on the timeline. Review the Bible story provided using the bolded text, or summarize the story in your own words. Before you summarize, demonstrate a clapping pattern like two fast claps followed by two slow claps. Invite the kids to use the clapping pattern the first time you say hand or hands. Pause after the first reference and give them another pattern for the next time they hear the words. Continue as you retell the story. Unit 26 Session 6 Younger Elementary 5

Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group Say The religious leaders or Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus. They were more concerned about their own rules than they were about the man who couldn t use his hand. Jesus showed them that He was more interested in doing good, especially on a day when people were supposed to be worshiping God. Jesus healed the man s hand. Jesus performed many miracles so everyone could know who Jesus is. Show the big picture question slide or poster. Say What did Jesus miracles prove? Jesus miracles proved that He is the Son of God. Activity choice (10 minutes) Option 1: Picture review Bible Story Pictures tape scissors (optional) beanbag or paper wad Tape the Bible story pictures from each session this unit to the floor, all within a few inches of each other. If you don t have all the posters, print the Bible Story Pictures printables, and cut out each Bible story picture. Invite the kids to line up single file. Tape a start line a few feet from the pictures. Provide the first kid in line with a beanbag or paper wad. Encourage him to toss the beanbag toward the pictures. If it lands on a picture, he must tell one fact from that story. The next kid repeats. Continue as time allows. If a kid misses the pictures, invite her to try again. If you want to make it more competitive, kids who miss the pictures or who cannot share a fact about the Bible story must sit out. Keep going until only one or two players remain. Say All of these Bible stories help prove something very important about Jesus. What did Jesus miracles prove? Jesus miracles proved that He is the Son of God. Option 2: Hand wreath half sheets of construction paper paper plates scissors markers glue Unit 26 Session 6 Younger Elementary 6

Sunday, Nov 23, 2014 Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group adhesive- backed magnets (optional) hole punch (optional) string (optional) Provide the kids with several half sheets of construction paper in various colors. Invite them to trace their hands and cut out at least six handprints. Encourage writers to write on each handprint a way they can use their hands to serve or worship God. Give the kids paper plates. Instruct them to cut the middle circle out of the plate and discard it. They should then glue the palms of the handprints around the remaining ring with the fingers pointing outside the circle to create a wreath. Kids may add additional decorations with markers if they wish. Add an adhesive- backed magnet for kids to put the wreath on the refrigerator. Or hole punch the wreath and add a string for kids to hang it on a door. Say We can use our hands in many ways to serve and worship God. Jesus healing of the man with the paralyzed hand and all the other miracles Jesus performed reminds us of who Jesus is. What did Jesus miracles prove? Jesus miracles proved that He is the Son of God. Journal and prayer (5 minutes) Journal Page, 1 per kid markers or crayons Bible Story Coloring Page Distribute each child s journal page provided with this session. Instruct the kids to draw a picture of the man after his hand was healed. Writers can write the big picture question and answer. Say Don t forget the big picture question and answer. What did Jesus miracles prove? Jesus miracles proved that He is the Son of God. If time remains, take prayer requests or allow kids to complete the coloring page provided with this session. Pray, thanking God for the miracles Jesus did to help people believe in Him. Pray for each child by name, asking God to help us serve Him, knowing that He is the One and Only Son of God. Dismiss to parents Make sure to check security tags when dismissing children. Unit 26 Session 6 Younger Elementary 7
