Did You Know? Resting on the grounds of your Old Cathedral within its historic catacombs and cemetery are several of the original 22 Catholics who petitioned the French Consulate to open up a Catholic Church in New York City. Their efforts resulted in the construction of St. Peter s Church and the start of the Catholic Church in New York. That the grounds upon which your Old Cathedral sits was originally a Farm. The Tucker farm, was purchased by St. Peter s Church for use as a cemetery when their adjacent cemetery reached capacity. As the Catholic Church expanded, it was decided that New York s first Cathedral would be constructed on the land as well. Parochial school education was conceived and launched by Archbishop John Hughes at 32 Prince Street. Your Old Cathedral s Erben Organ is a one of a kind master built pipe organ in New York City.
Our Future As we reflect on the past, we like to think of ourselves as a family of people forging a path to the future by helping each other be better disciples of Jesus. We want to create vibrant lives for each and every one through the celebration of the sacraments, community service and social interaction. Our Basilica is the place to go for worship of God as well as involvement and personal growth. This is a tremendous time of grace for the Basilica of St. Patrick s Old Cathedral. We celebrated our 200th year as a church serving a diverse and ever-changing population. The Basilica and most of the landmarked buildings in our campus are undergoing a complete restoration to bring them back to their original glory. Your help will ensure that we can complete the transformation of our vision into reality.
