5. We are all equal because we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Cor. 5:10). Perhaps the best example of this in Scripture comes in the form of a parable. We all remember the story of the man that came to Jesus, testing Him with the question about eternal life. After a back-and-forth about the Law, the man asked, And who is my neighbor? The Parable of the Good Samaritan follows: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you. So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? And he said, He who showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. Jesus emphasizes that being a neighbor is more than talk. The real neighbor is the one that showed mercy, the one that acted. He wasn t thinking about skin color, or race or ethnicity. He saw a fellow human being in need and he helped. The same charge Jesus gave to the lawyer is the same one He gives to us: Go and do likewise. So there is certainly a very real sense in which we are all neighbors. The real question is this: will we be neighborly? Will we demonstrate the love of Christ and show the world a better road to travel? Will we work with people so that they can see the difference Jesus makes in a life? Though we cannot endorse sin or sinful behavior or false religious ideas, we can compassionately seek the lost in the world and show them
that there is a better way. As Peter writes, honor all people (1 Pet. 4:17).
