The Narthex & Food Bank Elizabeth Paice was recently able to attend the official opening of the new premises for the Food Bank; now located in Tyseley. It provided a wonderful opportunity to talk to so many other people who are involved in all the different aspects of the work coordinated by the Narthex, our Food Bank, the Clothing Bank and The One Stop Shop which provides advice on benefits, housing problems etc. When talking to the lady who runs the Clothing Bank, she reiterated the constant need for men s shoes and trainers of all sizes, but the real urgency is for towels; these are needed for the men who are either rough sleepers, living in hostels or sofa surfers (they very rarely choose this way of life). Your help is really appreciated both by the staff and the people who receive the items. 2
School and Church Fete - Friday 30 th June 5.30pm onwards The fete is one of our biggest fundraisers during the year. It is especially important this year as we move to being a single parish. Please can you help? There are many ways in which to do this: HELP ON THE DAY to help set up, to help clear up or to be there in charge of or helping on the stalls/activities that the church is responsible for. (Entrance gate, raffle sales, tombola, cakes, good quality children s games and books, car parking) HELP BEFORE selling as many raffle tickets as you can, carefully considering items that could be raffle or tombola prizes and bringing them to the box in the Undercroft as soon as possible. This year we are also looking for good quality as new games and books for children (No others thanks) COMMITMENT firm offers of help are the ones we need if you ve not been able to help before talk to Barbara Philp or Jean Brown. One or two hours is better than none. You may be able to help by bringing someone who hasn t got transport. COME on the day and support it funds your church. Collect at 8am Service God, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Collect at 10am Service God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 4
Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 5
John 20:19-23 19 The disciples were afraid of the Jewish leaders, and on the evening of that same Sunday they locked themselves in a room. Suddenly, Jesus appeared in the middle of the group. He greeted them 20 and showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they became very happy. 21 After Jesus had greeted them again, he said, I am sending you, just as the Father has sent me. 22 Then he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone s sins, they will be forgiven. But if you don t forgive their sins, they will not be forgiven. Post Communion Prayer Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal: open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
