Welcome to Zion Lutheran Church! 1732 S. Main St. Aberdeen, SD 57401 605-225-6755 Email: zion@nvc.net Website: www.zionlutheranaberdeen.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rooted in Faith * Growing in Spirit * Reaching Out to Those in Need ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 500th Anniversary of the Reformation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9:45 am October 29, 2017 On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ the good news that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to reform and unite the church in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord s table. PRELUDE Brass ~ Psalm XVII Chester Kingsbury Brass ~ Rejoicing Handel We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. PROCESSIONAL HYMN A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ELW #504 with Brass GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. GATHERING WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand) All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. 1 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Gracious Father, we pray for your church throughout the world. Fill it with all truth and peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it; where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in need, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (please be seated) SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN ~ SING I Am A C A TIME FOR CHILDREN WORD FIRST READING: Romans 3:19-28 Pew Bible NT pg. 160 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 46 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. (Ps. 46:7) 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea; 3 though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day. 6 The nations rage, and the kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth melts away. 5 6

7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 8 Come now, regard the works of the LORD, what desolations God has brought upon the earth; 9 behold the one who makes war to cease in all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 10 Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. SPECIAL MUSIC God Is Our Refuge Allen Pote Zion Adult Choir ALLELUIA (please stand) SONG OF THE DAY Creator God, Our Sovereign Lord Creator God, our Sovereign Lord, The heavens tell, the stars have shown, Your splendor, might, and Deity, But Truth lies in your Word alone. My heart to you, O God, I give, And by your Word I live. In Truth your Word reveals my guilt, My lost, unworthy self makes known, But now made new I m justified And live and move by Faith alone. My heart to you, O God, I give, And now by Faith I live. Before you made the world you chose, In love, to send your only Son To ransom me and make me one With Christ, my Lord, by Grace alone. My heart to you, O God, I give, And now by Grace I live. O Christ, Redeemer, Savior, King, Subdued by grace, I am your own; Enthrall my soul and make me free, Reformed, redeemed by Christ alone. My heart to you, O God, I give, And now in Christ I live. O glorious God, who reigns on high, With heart in hand, before your throne, We hymn your glory round the world With psalms adoring you alone. My heart to you, O God, I give And for your glory live. The holy gospel according to John the 8 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 Pew Bible NT pg. 105 The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated) SERMON Pastor Erin 7 CREED (please stand) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 8

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. SHARING OF THE PEACE All are invited to greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace saying, Peace be with you or similar words. If you prefer not to shake hands, any friendly word or gesture is appropriate. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Let us share this peace with one another. OFFERING (please be seated) The children are welcome to come forward and place their offerings in the For Children Everywhere box. OFFERING SONG Create In Me A Clean Heart Create in me a clean heart, O God. And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, And take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation. And uphold me with your free spirit. Create in me a clean heart, O God. And renew a right spirit within me. OFFERING PRAYER God of grace, it is our delight and our devotion to give these gifts to you. All we are and all we have are yours alone. Accept this joyful offering as a token of our abiding love: use it to bring your peace, justice, mercy and comfort to all the world. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for Christ s church, the world, and all of God s creation. 9 We pray for the unity of your church. Free us to be one body in Christ, graciously receiving his life and boldly offering it to a world in need. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for all nations of the world: for leaders of villages, cities, states, and nations, for lawmakers and judges, for teachers and students, and for all who work for peace. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for those who seek refuge and strength: refugees, the imprisoned, and those bound by addictions or burdened by guilt. We pray for the ill or injured (especially). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for a continued reformation in this and every congregation. New beginnings, impart wisdom. Established traditions, inspire creativity. All ministries, revive our hope in the one who makes all things new. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all of these for whom we pray, trusting in your grace and mercy, in the power of the risen Jesus Christ and in the many gifts of the Holy Spirit. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of his son, Jesus. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION 10

LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. INVITATION TO COMMUNION COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION All are welcome at the Lord s table. Please come forward as directed by the ushers. Grape juice and gluten free wafers are available; please indicate to the server by raising your hand. COMMUNION SONGS Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found. Was blind but now I see. Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear And Grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed. My chains are gone, I've been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood his mercy reigns; Unending love, amazing grace. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. My chains are gone, I've been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood his mercy reigns; Unending love, amazing grace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow. The sun forbear to shine. But God who called me hear below, Will be forever mine. Will be forever mine. Will be forever mine. I Believe In Jesus I believe in Jesus. I believe He is the Son of God. I believe He died and rose again. I believe He paid for us all. And I believe He s here now, standing in our midst, Here with the power to heal now and the grace to forgive. I believe in You, Lord. I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died and rose again. I believe You paid for us all. And I believe You are here now, standing in our midst, Here with the power to heal now and the grace to forgive. BLESSING & PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (please stand) The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Let us pray. Gracious God, in this meal you have drawn us to your heart, and nourished us at your table with food and drink, the body and blood of Christ. Now send us forth to be your people in the world, and to proclaim your truth this day and forevermore, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. SENDING BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. FIRST READING: Romans 3:19-28 Pew Bible NT pg. 160 Paul s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ. 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Word of God, word of life. GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 Pew Bible NT pg. 105 Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin. 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
