Gospel Christmas For The City 1:00pm, December 24, 2012

Christmas Message 2012 It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold Peace on the earth, good will to all from heaven s all-loving King The world in solemn silence lay to hear the angels sing. For over 120 years this Cathedral church has attempted to be a place where the song of peace and goodwill of the angels can be heard again in Vancouver. At Christmas most especially we sing of it, and tell in word and song the story of God being born as a baby in order to bring peace and love to the world. But it is not only at Christmas but throughout the year that we try to live into the angels song and make it closer to reality for the people of our city. We open our doors to the hungry and provide them with respect and companionship as well as with food. We invite people in to experience the peace and beauty that comes from listening to great music, and also we provide a place for silence and stillness in the midst of bustle and busyness. We celebrate the gifts of children and let them know that they are beloved and essential members of our community. We provide a welcoming space for 12 step groups and a listening ear to those wrestling with their own inner tensions and conflicts. We sing and talk and pray together about a world of peace and justice, and turn in worship to the God who yearns for there to be abundance and love throughout the world. In order to be a place of singing and silence, of peace and respect and goodwill, we have to spend money. The money to keep these doors open and food and hospitality flowing out to our city comes from donations given by those who value what they have experienced here. We ask that this Christmas you might consider making a gift to this cathedral church so that we can continue to sing the angels song in this beautiful place. Music: William James Kirkpatrick, adapt. During Away in a Manger children are asked to come to the front. Children s Story Jessica Pratezina, Archdeacon Ellen Clark-King, The Rev. Chris Dierkes CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL The First Nowell The first nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay, in fields where they lay keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Refrain And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Refrain This star drew nigh to the northwest; o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. Refrain Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Refrain Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord, who hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood salvation bought. Refrain Text: English Trad.
