His Story by Carrie Varnell What Who When Wear (Props) A simple and fun way to tell the story of the night Christ was born. Themes: Christmas, Emmanuel, God With Us, Incarnation One- Narrator; female Two- Male; goofy Three - Male Four- Female Present Scarf Stool or chair to stand on Three baseball caps Why Luke 2 How Time The goal with this style of storytelling is to keep moving. Always anticipate what's coming next in the script with your blocking (movement). It should also be high energy. Approximately 5 minutes Skit Guys, Inc. Actors One, Two and Three address the audience. There are so many great stories in the Bible, but the one that matters the most, Four: The biggest game-changer ever in the history of everything, Is the story of how our awesome God, the God who is all-powerful and all-knowing, the God who is everywhere all the time, the God walks through time, who spoke the world into existence came here to earth to live among us. Or as I like to call it "God in a bod". Pause. All other actors look at Two like he's a little crazy. (Not sure what to say to that) Okay. (Continuing on ) So let's start from the beginning. Now in the beginning (Interrupting; Proud he's helping) God created the heavens and the earth. (To Two) That's actually too far back, we really only have a few minutes, WERMARK so we should probably fast forward this a little. I was going to say in the beginning was the Word. Like in John 1. It says The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. But there's so much great stuff in the Old Testament, like when God created the world and Abraham did all that cool stuff and then Moses and the Red Sea and he's all "You shall not pass!!" (a la Gandalf) Yes, but all that great stuff was God setting the stage for a birthday party like no other. It all started with a young girl, Mary, Four has put a scarf around her head for a biblical head covering. She continues to face the audience even as Three speaks to her from behind. Three is on a stool and holds out his arms like wings. He is also facing the audience. who was engaged to Joseph. Two is simply off to the side, and waves or salutes when One refers to him. Behind Four, Three is on a stool and holds out his arms like wings. 2

An angel appeared to her and said Hey, Mary Mary Four: Hello? (Really excited) Hey, Mary it's me, Gabriel, the angel. Hey great news! You have found favor with God and behold! Four: (As a teenage girl would be if she saw a celebrity) Oh! Wow! An angel! Yes! You made me lose my place, where was I? Oh yes, (suddenly big!) behold! God thinks you're pretty special and He's got a really big job for you. God is going to come here to earth to live among you. He's going to come as a baby and you're going to be His mom! Four: Really?! That's awesome. So how's this going to work? I'm still a virgin. Well, it's the Holy Spirit. He's going to make that happen it's just going to be a miracle. Four: Oh! Okay! Cool. (Not hearing her. He's prepared a whole speech) Now, I know this is a little hard to understand and it can be kind of confusing, but wait, what? You're good with this? WERMARK Four: Yep! I'm just so honored that God would choose me. Huh. I had this whole big speech planned out. I guess my work here is done! Up top! They high-five. So, the angel went and told Joseph the same thing in a dream and Joseph got on board with the whole plan! During the next lines from One, Four gets up and moves off to the side with Two. Four mimes that she is pregnant and in labor. Three (Joseph) is trying to help her walk as they "travel" to Bethlehem. So Joseph married Mary and then they went to Bethlehem, because of a census. By the time they got there, the city was full of people! Four: Owwwww!! Three goes into a panic and starts running around the stage looking for a place to stay. 3

(Noticing that "Mary" is now in labor) Oh dear. Joseph couldn't find any place to stay! (He runs up next to One; hysterical) I can't find any place to stay! So finally he found an innkeeper. Three steps up to One and becomes the innkeeper. One becomes the innkeeper's wife. Excuse me! Do you have any room for us? Any room at all? (Labor pain from Four) My wife is about to have a baby! I don't have any room. (One elbows him) Ow! But I have a barn. You can stay there. We'll take it! After all the chaos, things become settled and reverent. Two and Three create a tableaux of Mary kneeling, holding baby Jesus (the scarf can be wadded up to become the baby) while Joseph stands over her. So, baby Jesus our awesome God, Four: the God who is all-powerful and all-knowing, who spoke the world into existence, WERMARK came here to earth to be one of us. Emmanuel. God with us. (Beat) Now, while this was going on in Bethlehem, a bright star shone in the night right over the manger where Jesus was born! There were some shepherds not far away watching over their sheep. Again, an angel appeared and said, On the word "Now" from One, the scene/tableaux breaks and Three steps up on a stool. Two, One and Four become the shepherds a la surfer dudes by putting on backwards caps. They are facing the angel (Three) with their backs to the audience. Their mouths are hanging open. (In a huge ominous voice) Do not be afraid! (They're frozen with terror) I love doing that. You should see your faces. (Back to being big!) Behold! I've got some really good news! Not far from here a baby was born! It's the Savior, Jesus! The One you've been waiting for. Follow the star and it'll take you right to Him! 4

One, Two and Four turn around slowly and simultaneously continuing to look up at the heavenly host. They're dumbfounded. Their mouths are still hanging wide open in awe. (Think "Crush" from Finding Nemo.) Four: Dude! Did you guys just see that? Four: Dude, that angel was all like, dude. Yeah, and we were all like "dude?" and they were all like "dude!" and then we were like "duuuude." So, dude, we better get on to Bethlehem. Yeah! I totally want to see the Messiah! All: Awesome! (Back to storyteller) So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Jesus! And they bowed down and worshipped Him. This is the greatest and most true story of all time, but it's not the end. It was just the beginning for a simple child Four: from a simple birth, with humble beginnings. In a small backwoods town, just eeking out enough from a simple life until it was time. WERMARK Time to help the helpless. Time to heal the sick. Four: Time to feed the hungry. Time to be the light. Time to share HIS story. As you celebrate the greatest story ever told this Christmas season, remember that the God of the universe is right here with you. All: Awesome. Lights out. 5
