Loving God! Loving People! Loving Life! Message Notes The Mary Model Life Church Smyrna Sunday, May 14, 2017 10:30am Pastor Shell Osbon Luke 1:26-38 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 Don t be afraid, Mary, the angel told her, for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His ancestor David. 33 And He will reign over Israel forever; His kingdom will never end! 34 Mary asked the angel, But how can this happen? I am a virgin. 35 The angel replied, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and He will be called the Son of God. 36 What s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the Word of God will never fail. 38 Mary responded, I am the Lord s servant. May everything you have said about me come true. And then the angel left her. (NLT) 1. Submission To God s Will Luke 1:28-29 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, Greetings, favored woman! A class of second grade students were asked: Why did God make moms? Mostly to clean the house. What are moms made of? God makes moms out of clouds, angel hair, everything nice in the world and one dab of mean. A class of second grade students were asked: What would you change about your mom? She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I d get rid of that. What kind of little girl was your mom? I wasn t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy. 4

1. Submission To God s Will 5

Luke 1:28-29 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. (NLT) Mary didn t initially understand what Gabriel told her and it took some time for her to process the news. Luke 1:30 Don t be afraid, Mary, the angel told her, for you have found favor with God! (NLT) Gabriel knew Mary was scared so he assured her that God s favor was upon her life. 6

Luke 1:38 Mary responded, I am the Lord s servant. May everything you have said about me come true. (NLT) Despite the fact that pregnancy out of wedlock was a reason for Joseph not to marry her and despite the rumors that some would spread, Mary was willing to submit to the will of God! Luke 2:21-24 21 Eight days later, when the Baby was circumcised, He was named Jesus, the name given Him by the angel even before He was conceived. 22 Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the law of Moses after the birth of a child; so His parents took Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord. (cont d) 7

23 The law of the Lord says, If a woman s first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord. (NLT) Mary could publicly dedicate Jesus because she had submitted to the will of God and done nothing wrong. Psalm 127:3 Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him. (NLT) Despite the challenges associated with being a Mom, children truly are a gift and a reward. 8

2. Confidence In God s Power John 2:1-5 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no wine. (cont d) 9

4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it. (NLT) Mary had confidence that whatever Jesus said to do would solve the problem. Jeremiah 32:17 O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by Your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for You! (NLT) You can have confidence in God s power which was what He used to create the world! 10

Luke 18:27 Jesus said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. (NKJV) Your problems cannot be solved by the power of man but they can be solved by the power of God! Mark 9:23b Anything is possible if a person believes. (NLT) Anything is possible when you combine your faith in God with His incredible power! 11

3. Devotion To God s Son John 19:25-27 25 Standing near the cross were Jesus mother, and His mother s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw His mother standing there beside the disciple He loved, He said to her, Dear woman, here is your son. (cont d) 12

27 And He said to this disciple, Here is your mother. And from then on this disciple took her into his home. (NLT) Mary was one of the few people who was devoted enough to be with Jesus on the day of His crucifixion. Mary wasn t hiding in fear like some of the disciples and she didn t care what might happen to her after Jesus death because she was fully devoted to Him. 13

John 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commandments. (NKJV) Your devotion to Christ will be seen through your obedience to Christ. the big idea Mary is a great role model for all Moms. 14

we re all about Loving God! Loving People! Loving Life! 15
