Attendance Policy: Since catechetical formation is fundamental in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church, Roman Catholics are obligated to receive suitable catechesis before they receive the celebration of the sacraments (Code of Canon Law 777.1). With this being said, it s pivotal that Confirmation candidates at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church attend all preparation sessions, attend the Edge or Bible study at least twice a month, and attend the Edge retreat in the Spring semester. Attendance is mandatory. If exceptional circumstances (i.e. car accident, hospitalization, death of a family member) arise and prevent the candidate from being at a session, please email Jake at jake@smarymag.org or call him at 480-279- 6737 x211 to make him aware of your child s absence. Sponsors: We ask that candidates have a sponsor who will support them during this journey as you prepare for Confirmation; however they must meet the basic requirements and duties. The role of the sponsor is to walk with them as a mentor, to be a witness of their faith, and to be a bridge to the traditions of the Catholic faith. Basic Requirements for Sponsors: A Catholic leading a life of faith in harmony with the duty they are undertaking: regular participation in the Sacraments, if married married in the Catholic Church, evidence of a converted heart and a love for Jesus and his Church, desire to participate in the Church s mission of evangelization, basic knowledge of the Church s teachings, living in accord with the Church s teachings, desire to continue his/her formation, punctual and flexible, open to new relationships, open to questions, open to being a witness of faith to others, prudent and able to keep confidentiality, and be at least sixteen years of age. The sponsor must be a confirmed Catholic and cannot be the child s parent. If they are married, they must be married in the Catholic Church. If they are single, they cannot be living with a significant other. Basic Duties: Participate in certain formation classes, maintain regular personal contact with the person during his/her time in the formation process, and continue regular contact after the candidate has come into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Sponsors must attend the formation sessions with students, as it often helps to spark discussion when reflecting together outside of class. If the sponsor does not live in the area, a proxy will be needed to stand in for the sponsor during the weekly sessions. Once a sponsor has been chosen, he/she will need to provide a letter of good standing. This letter would come from the pastor of the parish they are registered. It should state that they
are active, participating members of the parish and that they have received all sacraments of Initiation. It should also state that they are able to fill the role as sponsor for Confirmation. This letter needs to be turned in no later than October 5, 2015. Fees: The class fees are due by the first Meeting. Confirmation only: $25 per candidate First Communion/Confirmation $35 per candidate Dates: All sessions will be held from 5:30-7PM on the following Mondays in JPII Conference Room. See schedule attached.
