The Woman at the Well John 4:3-28: He left Judea and returned to Galilee. He had to * pass through Samaria. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. (The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks? Jesus answered and said to her "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. 16 Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back. The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband. For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.

The Woman at the Well The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; * but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything. Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you. At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her? The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, "Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah? They went out of the town and came to him. 1. What did you see, notice, feel? I see. 2. What truth is Jesus telling us about himself, God, our lives? I understand 3. What are we called to do? I will

And he opened his mouth and taught them: The Beatitudes 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12* Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, Matthew 5 A reminder: 13* "You are the salt of the earth; 14* "You are the light of the world. Why: 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

The Torah (God s Instruction) They Stood afar off: The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20) 3 "You shall have no other gods before* me. 4 "You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5* you shall not bow down to them or serve them;... 7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain 8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 12 "Honor your father and your mother. 13 "You shall not kill. 14 "You shall not commit adultery. 15 "You shall not steal. 16 "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbors." 18 Now when all the people perceived the thunderings and the lightnings and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled; and they stood afar off, 19 and said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will hear; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.

What did Jesus Teach? The Reign of God is Here (Luke 17: 20-21) God is a loving Father (Luke 11:1-13) God is Merciful (Luke 15:11-32) Repent, believe the Good News (Mark 1:15) Imitate His Life (He is the Way) (John 14:6) (Matthew 25: 31-46) He is present with the Church the ecclesia (Matthew 28:28-20) He is present through the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-18, 25-26) To accept Him is to accept the Cross (Matthew 16:24) He came that we might have hope, joy (John 15:11) There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. Luke 10:42

What did Jesus Teach? Matthew 22: 36-40: "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

Jesus: God Incarnate From the Latin caro, carnis = flesh, becoming flesh : God s act of becoming man in Jesus Christ. This is the foundation of Christian faith and of hope for the redemption of mankind. YOUCAT 358: By his Incarnation, God is no longer absolutely unimaginable; after Jesus we can picture what he is like: He who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9). John 15: 4-5 - Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. John 6: 56-57 - Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.

The Paschal Lamb The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) But the blood will mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thus, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you. "This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the LORD, as a perpetual institution. (Exodus 12:13-14) That the Paschal Lamb prefigured symbolically Christ, "the Lamb of God", who redeemed the world by the shedding of His blood, and particularly the Eucharistic banquet, or new Passover, has always remained the constant belief of Christian tradition.

Jesus Savior Salvation: The forgiveness of sins and restoration of friendship with God, which can be done by God alone (CCC Glossary) John 10: 11 I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. 17 This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. John 11: 25 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? 27 * She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world. Acts 4:12 There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved."

I urge you always to be faithful to your charisms and your call to the courageous following of Christ, not being conformed to the style of this world (cf. Rom 12:2), but rather incarnating the Gospel values of fraternity, sharing, obedience and peace, in service, meekness and humility. All of this is a profound expression of the spirit of the Gospel, the spirit of Christ. (Homily, 24 May 1992)
