Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 CF. EPH 1:17-18 GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
FROM FATHER PHIL My Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Theresa, As you may know, today is the fortieth anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. What better way of celebrating this milestone than by gathering in this sacred place to do what Jesus asked of us the night before he died? It s a long way from St. Patrick s Church Wellington in rural Shropshire where I was ordained by Bishop Graser of Shrewsbury Diocese in the United Kingdom. The line One step enough for me from the famous hymn Abide with Me is heart touching for me every time I listen to it. My journey has been long and varied. Back in the 1970 s, what most Brits knew about Texas was what we saw on a certain television program called Dallas. A map was not available to me plotting my future sojourns. If it had been, I would not have believed it. Although late into the evening of July 15th, 1978, after everyone had left the ordination reception I was alone with Fr. Jim O Keefe, he was my pastoral theology professor. I said somewhat melancholy that I would spend my life seventy miles from this place, my place of birth, for the rest of my life. It sounded like a death sentence. As I indulge myself and look back, I thank God for the richness of the journey so far. The people of Wythenshawe Manchester and Ellesmere Port near Liverpool welcomed me and shared their life and faith. That was my assignment for the first nine years of priesthood. For the next three years, I spanned two continents. My base was a pretty Cotswold village with a religious community known as the servants of the Paraclete and then the nine months were spent in religious formation in the mountains of New Mexico. A whole year in Wiltshire, at a place called Clouds House, began to equip me to work therapeutically with those struggling with addictions. The next nine years were spent sharing the lives of those wanting to be free from the cycle of addiction. Where did the last seventeen years go? You know the answer to that! Not seventy, but over four thousand miles to this place which I have been happy to call home in the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. Journeying from St. Vincent s to St. Laurence and then finally at home as your pastor. At my ordination mass forty years ago, a friend sang, Do not be afraid for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine (Isaiah 43:1). Looking back, I was so afraid, scared of my own shadow. Nine years as a parochial vicar in the UK, three years in religious life, ten years as a counselor, seventeen in Texas, twelve of them as your pastor at St. Theresa, have deepened my faith and love and taken away so much fear. Thank you and bless you, as you and so many others have me over the last four decades. Fr. Phil Lloyd Pastor Stewardship St Theresa ended the Fiscal Year 2018 with a $159,000 shortage in our Stewardship donations from our budget. We have been holding a $176,000 balance in our savings account for several years. Due to the stewardship shortfall, we used $100,000 of our savings for parish operating expenses. The results below reflect the collections for the first two weeks of the new fiscal year starting July 1, 2018.
