Exdus 25-26 SLIDE 25/26-1 The next sectin f study in Exdus runs until chapter 31, and it cnsists f the instructins fr the building f the Lrd s sanctuary, called the tabernacle The tabernacle was, fr its size, perhaps the mst expensive building every cnstructed It was remarkably small, barely the size f a mdest bedrm and an average living rm In fact, yu will likely be surprised t learn hw small mst f the items in the tabernacle truly were Yet despite it s mdest size, it was cnstructed ut f the mst valuable materials f the day Sme have estimated it cst $2 millin t build in Mses day, This wuld be an extrardinary amunt in tday s dllars The tabernacle is als a remarkable picture f Christ and Gd s wrk f redemptin thrugh His Sn Last week we heard the Lrd tell Mses that he was t fllw a precise pattern that the Lrd wuld shw Mses Ex. 25:9 Accrding t all that I am ging t shw yu, as the pattern f the tabernacle and the pattern f all its furniture, just s yu shall cnstruct it. Mses nt nly heard the instructins Gd gave him, Mses als saw an image f the finished building t guide him (see v.40) When finished, the tabernacle itself became a pattern Heb. 9:8 The Hly Spirit is signifying this, that the way int the hly place has nt yet been disclsed while the uter tabernacle is still standing, Heb. 9:9 which is a symbl fr the present time... The wrd fr symbl in v.9 means type r picture S the tabernacle was a symbl fr a time, a symbl f Christ S as we study the cnstructin f the tabernacle and it s purpse, we will als study the design f the tabernacle as a type, specifically a type f Christ 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 2 f 22 A type is a divinely intended parallel between a lessr frm and it s greater fulfillment The building is s rich in details that it is easy t get carried away with typlgy and imagine everything t be a type f Christ While there may be many illustratins f Christ, there are nly a few types identified in scripture Fr example, we knw that Isaac is a type f Christ in the way he was taken up t a muntain t be sacrificed by Abraham We knw this because Hebrews 11 tells us s Because we knw Isaac was a type f Christ, we might speculate that Abraham was a type f the Father in that stry Since the NT never specifically calls Abraham a type f the Father, we shuld nt call Abraham a type We can say that Abraham serves as an illustratin f the way the Father sacrificed His Sn Similarly, we will find many illustratins f Christ in the details f the tabernacle And perhaps these are divinely-intended types f Christ, even thugh they are nt called ut in the NT But I will play it safe and nly use the term illustratin t describe my extended cmparisns FInally, it s wrth nting that the pattern used t cnstruct the tabernacle is itself based n anther structure, a heavenly tabernacle The writer f Hebrews tells us this Heb. 8:1 Nw the main pint in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, wh has taken His seat at the right hand f the thrne f the Majesty in the heavens, Heb. 8:2 a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lrd pitched, nt man. Heb. 8:3 Fr every high priest is appinted t ffer bth gifts and sacrifices; s it is necessary that this high priest als have smething t ffer. Heb. 8:4 Nw if He were n earth, He wuld nt be a priest at all, since there are thse wh ffer the gifts accrding t the Law; 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 3 f 22 Heb. 8:5 wh serve a cpy and shadw f the heavenly things, just as Mses was warned by Gd when he was abut t erect the tabernacle; fr, SEE, He says, THAT YOU MAKE all things ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN. The design f the earthly tabernacle is based n the Heavenly ne This heavenly tabernacle is a place that Gd - nt man - erected S Israel is tld t cllect an ffering frm thse wh are mved (by the Spirit) t cntribute t the building f the sanctuary And frm these materials, Mses is t build a very unique structure fr the Lrd There are three primary purpses fr the building f tabernacle, accrding t scripture SLIDE 25/26-2 First, the tabernacle is t be the dwelling place f Gd n earth during the dispensatin f Law The Hebrew wrd fr dwell in v8 is shakan, frm which we als get the wrd shechinah The Shechinah glry f Gd is the visible presence f Gd amng His peple Since the fall f man in the Garden, Gd s presence has nly been manifested fr mments, in accrdance with Gd s purpses t reveal Himself But nw the Lrd desires a physical place in which His Schechinah glry will reside cntinuusly The tabernacle was nt the nly place Gd s presence might be fund n earth Gd is all spirit and therefre He can t be lcalized t a single place n earth He is everywhere at all times But the tabernacle was the ne and nly place where the the Lrd chse t manifest His glry t men n a cnsistent basis 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 4 f 22 In the Old Testament law, the natin f Israel was warned that if a man attempted t sacrifice t the Lrd utside f the tabernacle, He wuld be punished Lev. 17:3 Any man frm the huse f Israel wh slaughters an x r a lamb r a gat in the camp, r wh slaughters it utside the camp, Lev. 17:4 and has nt brught it t the drway f the tent f meeting t present it as an ffering t the LORD befre the tabernacle f the LORD, bldguiltiness is t be reckned t that man. He has shed bld and that man shall be cut ff frm amng his peple. In this detail, we find an illustratin f Christ The New Testament teaches that Christ is the ne and nly manifestatin f the Father s glry n earth Acts 4:12 And there is salvatin in n ne else; fr there is n ther name under heaven that has been given amng men by which we must be saved. The message in these requirements are clear: Gd sets the manner by which men may find Him Any attempt by men t seek Gd n their wn terms r utside His prvisin will result in judgment Just as Christ is the nly way t the Father, as Jesus said Jhn 14:6 Jesus said t him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; n ne cmes t the Father but thrugh Me. Secndly, The tabernacle was the Lrd s sanctuary accrding t v.8 The wrd sanctuary means a hly r a place set apart In this case, it is a place set apart frm sin It is hly grund, made s by the very presence f the Lrd s glry As when He tld Mses that the grund n which Mses std had becme hly grund S the tabernacle was a place set apart frm the sin f the wrld This is als an illustratin f Christ 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 5 f 22 Christ was the sinless sanctuary f the Father n earth Jhn says Jhn 1:14 And the Wrd became flesh, and dwelt amng us, and we saw His glry, glry as f the nly begtten frm the Father, full f grace and truth. The Greek wrd fr dwelt is the same wrd fr tabernacle Jesus was the glry f Gd tabernacling amng His peple And Paul says Cl. 1:19 Fr it was the Father s gd pleasure fr all the fullness t dwell in Him, All the fullness f the Father dwelled in Christ And Jhn again 1Jhn 3:5 Yu knw that He appeared in rder t take away sins; and in Him there is n sin. Jesus was the sinless sanctuary f the Father Finally, the tabernacle is smetimes called the tent f meeting, fr that was its third purpse The tabernacle became the place where Gd wuld cndescend t meet with man The men f Israel gathered in the tent accrding t Gd s rdinances The tabernacle allwed Israel t draw near Gd thrugh the High Priest f Israel, which interceded n behalf f the peple Once again, this is a type f Christ, as explained by the writer f Hebrews Heb. 7:25 Therefre He is able als t save frever thse wh draw near t Gd thrugh Him, since He always lives t make intercessin fr them. The very fact that Gd called fr a tent rather than a permanent structure pints t the temprary purpse f this structure 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 6 f 22 It was temprary because it was t be replaced by the wrk f Christ Even the magnificent temple built by Herd was temprary, as Jesus alluded in speaking abut the temple Luke 21:5 And while sme were talking abut the temple, that it was adrned with beautiful stnes and vtive gifts, He said, Luke 21:6 As fr these things which yu are lking at, the days will cme in which there will nt be left ne stne upn anther which will nt be trn dwn. S nw we begin t examine the details f this elabrate yet temprary structure, starting with the key pieces f furniture held within the tabernacle Altgether we will find seven pieces f furniture in the tabernacle, with sme described here and thers described later As we read the descriptin f this item and the ther furnishing t fllw, let s ntice the rder f the items described The descriptins prceed utward frm the mst imprtant part f the tabernacle, the Hly f Hlies and with the mst imprtant furniture first, the ark at the center f the structure The pint in rdering the descriptins in this way was t emphasize that Gd presence was at the heart f the structure And everything else is cnnected t that presence Were Gd nt present, the rest f the building wuld have n meaning r purpse Ex. 25:10 They shall cnstruct an ark f acacia wd tw and a half cubits lng, and ne and a half cubits wide, and ne and a half cubits high. Ex. 25:11 Yu shall verlay it with pure gld, inside and ut yu shall verlay it, and yu shall make a gld mlding arund it. Ex. 25:12 Yu shall cast fur gld rings fr it and fasten them n its fur feet, and tw rings shall be n ne side f it and tw rings n the ther side f it. Ex. 25:13 Yu shall make ples f acacia wd and verlay them with gld. Ex. 25:14 Yu shall put the ples int the rings n the sides f the ark, t carry the ark with them. Ex. 25:15 The ples shall remain in the rings f the ark; they shall nt be remved frm it. Ex. 25:16 Yu shall put int the ark the testimny which I shall give yu. 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 7 f 22 Ex. 25:17 Yu shall make a mercy seat f pure gld, tw and a half cubits lng and ne and a half cubits wide. Ex. 25:18 Yu shall make tw cherubim f gld, make them f hammered wrk at the tw ends f the mercy seat. Ex. 25:19 Make ne cherub at ne end and ne cherub at the ther end; yu shall make the cherubim f ne piece with the mercy seat at its tw ends. Ex. 25:20 The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, cvering the mercy seat with their wings and facing ne anther; the faces f the cherubim are t be turned tward the mercy seat. Ex. 25:21 Yu shall put the mercy seat n tp f the ark, and in the ark yu shall put the testimny which I will give t yu. Ex. 25:22 There I will meet with yu; and frm abve the mercy seat, frm between the tw cherubim which are upn the ark f the testimny, I will speak t yu abut all that I will give yu in cmmandment fr the sns f Israel. The first item described is the ark f the cvenant SLIDE 25/26-3 This is an item made even mre famus (if that were pssible) by the Indiana Jnes mvie SLIDE 25/26-4 Like the rest f the structure, the ark itself was nt very large but it was very rnate SLIDE 25/26-5 The ark was made f wd and cvered in pure gld It was abut 3 9 lng and nly 2 3 wide and high And it had rings f gld n the crners The rings were used in cnjunctin with rds f acacia wd cvered in gld t carry the ark SLIDE 25/26-6 SLIDE 25/26-7 The ark itself was never t be tuched by human hands In fact, ne time a well-intentined Israelite dared t tuch it 2Sam. 6:4 S they brught it with the ark f Gd frm the huse f Abinadab, which was n the hill; and Ahi was walking ahead f the ark. 2Sam. 6:5 Meanwhile, David and all the huse f Israel were celebrating befre the LORD with all kinds f instruments made f fir wd, and with lyres, harps, tamburines, castanets and cymbals. 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 8 f 22 2Sam. 6:6 But when they came t the threshing flr f Nacn, Uzzah reached ut tward the ark f Gd and tk hld f it, fr the xen nearly upset it. 2Sam. 6:7 And the anger f the LORD burned against Uzzah, and Gd struck him dwn there fr his irreverence; and he died there by the ark f Gd. Inside the ark the Israelites eventually placed three items Here Gd tells Mses t place the testimny in the ark The testimny refers t the tablets hlding the ten cmmandments, which represents the entire Law Ntice that the tablets themselves must have been fairly small t fit in a space nly 3.5 by 2 Later the Lrd will instruct Israel t add a jar f manna and the budding staff f Aarn All three f these elements picture Christ On tp f the ark was a lid The sinless Christ wh will judge all men accrding t the Law The bread f life that cmes dwn frm Heaven The rejected branch that shts frth frm the stem f Jesse, returning frm death t life SLIDE 25/26-8 This lid, called a mercy seat, was the mst imprtant place in the entire tabernacle It was made f pure gld (n wd fr the lid) It was the place f prpitiatin, a wrd which means t satisfy the wrath f Gd Over the mercy seat, the High Priest sprinkled the bld f the gat n the Day f Atnement This act satisfied the wrath f Gd against the sin f Israel under the cvenant But the Day f Atnement was nt a permanent prpitiatin nr was it a prpitiatin fr persnal sin 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 9 f 22 It served t temprarily appease the wrath f Gd against the natin f Israel fr their natinal sins under the Old Cvenant But nly the bld f Christ can fully satisfy the wrath f Gd against sin And nly by persnal faith in Christ s prpitiatin can a persn receive the frgiveness f Gd made pssible by Christ This is why there are tw days in the Jewish calendar when natinal sacrifices are made under the Law First, there is the sacrifice f a lamb n Passver The lamb symblizes the inncence f Christ Christ died withut sin s that He culd serve as an atning sacrifice n ur behalf Secndly, there was the sacrifice f a gat n the day f atnement There are tw gats: the scapegat wh is released frm the city carrying the sins f the peple and the ne sacrificed n the altar The gat sacrificed symblizes the wrath f Gd pured ut upn a substitute This is why in scripture sheep and gats are the animals used t symblize believers and unbelievers, respectively And Christ is pictured by bth animals in different ways Christ was bth the inncent lamb and the cndemned gat As Paul explains 2Cr. 5:21 He made Him wh knew n sin t be sin n ur behalf, s that we might becme the righteusness f Gd in Him. Gal. 3:13 Christ redeemed us frm the curse f the Law, having becme a curse fr us fr it is written, CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE Gal. 3:14 in rder that in Christ Jesus the blessing f Abraham might cme t the Gentiles, s that we wuld receive the prmise f the Spirit thrugh faith. 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 10 f 22 S the mercy seat f the ark is a type f Christ s prpitiatin in the NT Jhn says: 1Jhn 4:10 In this is lve, nt that we lved Gd, but that He lved us and sent His Sn t be the prpitiatin fr ur sins. The Greek wrd fr prpitiatin is the same wrd translated as mercy seat in Heb 9:5 S the mercy seat was the place where Gd s wrath was appeased, and it pictures Christ taking the wrath f Gd in ur place Rm. 5:9 Much mre then, having nw been justified by His bld, we shall be saved frm the wrath f Gd thrugh Him. On either end f the mercy seat are tw gld cherubim with their wings utspread t cver the lid It wuld here that the Shechinah glry f Gd appeared t Israel and spke t the peple It appeared in this small space abve the lid and under the wings f the cherubim The glry f Gd was the nly illuminatin in the Hly f Hlies, since the rm had n ther lamp and n windws Anther illustratin f Christ, Wh is the Light f the wrld And in the wrld t cme, the glry f Gd will illuminate the earth accrding t Revelatin 22:5 This glry f Gd remained n the ark until the years befre the destructin f Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar Ezekiel tells in chapters 8-11 f hw the glry f the Lrd first mved away frm the Hly f Hlies t the threshld f the temple illuminating the whle curt yard Then it mved t entrance t the east gate, and it was surrunded by real cherubim Finally, it departs the temple altgether and mves briefly t the Mt f Olives 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 11 f 22 The creatures attending t the Shechinah glry f Gd are called cherubim, and they are the highest frm f spiritual creatures in the heavenly realm The Bible mentined angels, seraphim and cherubim These beings play different rles in the heavenly realm and have different appearances The angelic realm are messengers f Gd ministering t His saints, as Hebrews tells us And cntrary t Hallmark cards and Victria Secrets catalgs, angels dn t have wings Seraphim are the next rank abve angels They are nly described in Isaiah 6 They are seen ministering t the Lrd arund His thrne and giving Him praise They have six wings Finally, the highest rder f spiritual creatures are cherubim They are described in detail in Ezekiel They are always assciated with the appearance f Gd s Shechinah glry These creatures are entrusted with His glry The chief cherub was Lucifer, befre he fell t becme Satan Perhaps this explains why Satan was s deceived t think he culd be like Gd, since he was the clsest t His glry Just as it required smene clse t Jesus, Judas, t betray Him Tgether, the ark and the mercy seat tell an integrated stry abut Christ By His death and resurrectin, Jesus is the giver f life His sacrifice appease the wrath f Gd, making pssible eternal life Jesus is the bread f life, like manna cming dwn frm Heaven 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 25-26 12 f 22 He is the glry f Gd, making pssible the glrificatin f sinful men S the Hly f Hlies represents Jesus as the Life f all men The next sectin describes furniture in the next rm f the tabernacle, mving utward, that is the Hly Place SLIDE 25/26-9 Ex. 25:23 Yu shall make a table f acacia wd, tw cubits lng and ne cubit wide and ne and a half cubits high. Ex. 25:24 Yu shall verlay it with pure gld and make a gld brder arund it. Ex. 25:25 Yu shall make fr it a rim f a handbreadth arund it; and yu shall make a gld brder fr the rim arund it. Ex. 25:26 Yu shall make fur gld rings fr it and put rings n the fur crners which are n its fur feet. Ex. 25:27 The rings shall be clse t the rim as hlders fr the ples t carry the table.
