Mid-Week Lent 4 Jesus is Our Self-Sacrificing High Priest March 7, 2018 Welcome to Worship Welcome and thank you for joining us for worship today! In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful Word. Through this Word, God strengthens our faith and draws us closer to him. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Jesus is our Great High Priest who offers the greatest sacrifice himself. He is himself the victim and our priest. Tonight may we by faith lay our hands on the head of God s faultless Lamb and believe Christ has paid for our sins with his precious blood forever. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Dearest Lord, you give life and you take it away. May your name be praised! Keep our eyes of faith focused on the life you have promised and guaranteed to us eternal life with you in heaven. Make that destination our priority. We know that this promise of eternal life can only be attained through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. In his name I pray. Amen. OPENING HYMN A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth Christian Worship #100 stanzas 1 and 2 CALL TO WORSHIP M: Lord God, you have brought us safely to this hour of evening prayer. We thank you for providing all that we need for body and life. Bless us who have gathered in your name. Forgive our sins. Speak to our hearts. Dispel our sorrows with the comfort of your Word, and receive our hymns of thanks and praise, through Jesus Christ, our living Savior, who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 3

LET MY PRAYER RISE BEFORE YOU Psalm 141 M: Let our prayers be acceptable in your sight. Come and help us in time of need that we may sing your praise in holy joy now and forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. 4

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 111 The Lord provided redemption, a payment, people needed. This psalm invites us to ponder with delight what our Lord has done for us. The Psalm will be sung in unison. Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. Refrain The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. Refrain 5

PSALM PRAYER M: God of majesty and power, the works of your hands are gracious and glorious, worthy of praise. Fill us with awe and reverence for your mighty deeds that we may follow your precepts all our days; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. PASSION HISTORY Mark 14:43-65 The Trial before the High Priest Just then, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. A crowd was with him, armed with swords and clubs. They were from the chief priests, the experts in the law, and the elders. 44 Now his betrayer had given them a signal, saying, The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard. 45 He went right to Jesus and said, Rabbi! and kissed him. 46 They laid hands on him and arrested him. 47 But one of those who stood nearby drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 Jesus responded by saying to them, Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me as you would a criminal? 49 Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But this happened so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled. 50 Then the disciples all left him and fled. 51 A certain young man was following him, wearing just a linen cloth over his naked body. They seized him, 52 but he left behind the linen cloth and fled from them naked. 53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the experts in the law gathered together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. He was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands. 59 Yet even on this point, their testimony did not agree. 6

60 The high priest stepped forward and questioned Jesus, Have you no answer? What is this they are testifying against you? 61 But Jesus was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest asked him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One? 62 I am, Jesus said. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming with the clouds of heaven. 63 The high priest tore his robes and said, Why do we need any more witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think? They all condemned him as being worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit on him. They covered his face and struck him with their fists, saying, Prophesy! The guards also took him and beat him. (EHV) SEASONAL RESPONSE FOR LENT C: All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. By his wounds we are healed. HYMN Behold the Lamb of God Christian Worship #101 stanzas 1 and 2 SERMON Hebrews 10:5-12 Jesus is Our Self-Sacrificing High Priest Therefore when he entered the world, Christ said: Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but you prepared a body for me. 6 You were not pleased with burnt offerings and sin offerings. 7 Then I said, Here I am. I have come to do your will, God. In the scroll of the book it is written about me. 8 First he said: Sacrifices and offerings that were offered according to the law, both burnt offerings and sin offerings, you did not desire, and you were not pleased with them. 9 Then he said: Here I am. I have come to do your will. He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 By this will, we have been sanctified once and for all, through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ. 11 In the one case, every priest stood ministering day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which are never able to remove sin. 12 In the other case, this priest, after he offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God. OFFERING An offering basket is available at the back of church. If you wish to give an offering, you may do so before or after worship. No offering will be gathered during the service. 9

LORD, HAVE MERCY M: For the well-being of people everywhere, for the growth of your church in all the world, and for the strengthening of all who serve and worship here, we pray, O Lord: M: For one another, young and old, for your blessings that come with every stage of life, and for joy in doing your will, we pray, O Lord: M: For our public servants who work day and night to bring protection, justice, learning, and health to this and every place, we pray to you, O Lord: M: For favorable weather and bountiful harvests, for clothing and food, for health of body, mind, and spirit, and for deliverance from all sin and every form of evil, we pray to you, O Lord: 10

M: For the faithful who have gone before us, who have shared with us your good news, whose souls are now at rest in your heavenly kingdom, we give you thanks, O Lord: M: In thanksgiving for your many and varied gifts to us, we now commend ourselves to your care. Be our shield and strength, O Lord. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PRAYER FOR PEACE M: Lord God, all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works come from you. Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments. Defend us also from the fear of our enemies that we may live in peace and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 11
