The Tabernacle What was the Tabernacle? NORTH WEST EAST SOUTH The ultimate goal is to be able to enter the Holy of Holies, the throne room of God. However, between us and the throne room are many barriers that need to be dealt with in order to make access to the presence of God possible. As you come to each aspect of the Tabernacle, discuss the barrier it represents, the hope it provides and how this hope was fulfilled by Jesus Christ THE TABERNACLE: Exodus 25-30 www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:1 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling [tabernacled] among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. THE COURTYARD WALL & GATE (150 x 75 x 7 ) John 10:9 (NIV) I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. John 14:6 (NIV) Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. THE ALTAR (9 x 9 x 6 ) Why do you think the altar is the first thing an Israelite encounters as he enters the tabernacle? www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:2 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

John 1:29 (NIV) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 1 Peter 3:18 (NIV) For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. THE WASH BASIN Jesus Hebrews 10:22 (NIV) let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Ephesians 5:25-27 (NIV) Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. THE LAMP STAND www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:3 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

John 8:12 (NIV) When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." THE SHOWBREAD (3 x 1.5 x 2 3 ) Why do we usually have food at any social gatherings? What role does food play? Jesus makes John 6:35 (NIV) Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 1Corinthians 1:9 (NIV) God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. THE ALTAR OF INCENSE (1.5 x 1.5 x 3 ) Hebrews 7:25 (NIV) Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:4 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

THE VEIL Hebrews 12:14 (NIV) Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. Jesus removes Mark 15:37-39 (NIV) With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!" Hebrews 10:19 (NIV) Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, THE HOLY OF HOLIES (15 x 15 x 15 ) Jesus Brings Hebrews 4:16 (NIV) Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:5 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT What is an ark? What is a covenant? What was the Ark of the Covenant? What does the word atonement mean? The atonement cover of the Ark is the seat of God s throne, the box is his footstool. (1Chronicles 28:2) Jesus provides 1 John 2:1-2 (NIV) 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1) Manna: What was manna? Barrier: (Exodus 16) Hope: www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:6 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

John 6:48-51 (NIV) I am the bread of life. 49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 2) Aaron s Budding Staff: Barrier: (Numbers 16-17) Hope: Hebrews 6:19-20 (NIV) We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. 3) Stone Tablets: Barrier: (Exodus 32) Hope: Jesus offers Hebrews 9:15 (NIV) For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:7 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved

What strikes you most about how God established the Mosaic Law and specifically the tabernacle? We have not had time to reflect on other aspects of tabernacle worship (priesthood, offerings, laws, etc.), but every one of these are pictures that reveal the barriers to and the hope of a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ. How might this affect how you read through the Old Testament? HOMEWORK: Spend some time this week reflecting on all God had to do to make it possible for you to be reconciled to him. www.strategicdiscipleship.com 2:8 Copyright 2011, Rob Laidlaw, All Rights Reserved
