LARRY SAY? The word of God is living and effective, discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart. God s word is living and effective. Our faith can t be, mustn t be, just a set of ideas, or concepts, or ideals, or rules and regulations, written on paper. I know I harp on this a lot, but our faith must have an effect both on, and in, our everyday lives. Our faith should be a part of who we are and how we live our life. When someone who is perhaps neither Christian nor Catholic asks you to explain the faith to which you say you belong, your response shouldn t begin with the words: I ll explain what I believe. Instead, as I ve said so many times before, you should be able to say: You want to know about my faith? Then look at how I live my life. Look at my priorities at work, at school, at home. Follow me around for a day, and you should easily understand how my faith expresses itself in my life. We all preach daily, maybe not from the pulpit, but in our day to day interactions with people. When we examine the day before going to bed at night, we should all ask ourselves the question: Are the people who encountered me today at work, on the street, wherever; are they closer to God or further away from God for having met me today? We always need to remember, that whether we like it or not; whether we believe it or not; even whether we feel it or not, God is always looking over our shoulder. The Holy Spirit is active in my life, challenging me, inspiring me, supporting me, and even, if necessary, making me feel guilty for what I have, or haven t, done today to proclaim the Good News. So let s today resolve anew to let the world see our faith, not necessarily in a lot of words, but in the day to day decisions that we make. Let s continue to strive to make our faith a living and dynamic way of life, not just words on a page. As St. Paul reminds us in his Letter to Timothy: Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. After all, isn t that what the Holy Spirit does for each of us everyday? FR. Larry Smith S.J.

For many years, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) has been an approved Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) charity. Due to a clerical error and failed communications with the CFC, the AMS has been denied participation as a charitable organization for the 2016 CFC taking place this fall. In conjunction with the triennial National Collection for the AMS to be taken up November 5 6 throughout most of the dioceses in the United States, the faithful of the Archdiocese are encouraged to participate in the AMS Appeal the same weekend. Military personnel and their families will have the opportunity to contribute independently by sending individual donations to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA Appeal or making a gift online at www.milarch.org/amsappeal. The full amount of donations made through the Appeal will be received by the AMS with no percentage of fees deducted for the CFC s overhead costs. AMS Appeal materials will be available in the coming weeks. It is the intention of the AMS to submit an application for inclusion in the 2017 Combined Federal Campaign, knowing it is a convenient way for many AMS faithful to participate in the CFC and to support the AMS at the same time. In the meantime, if you are a Federal employee, online gifts can made at www.milarch.org/donate http://www.milarch.org/donate Prayer Seeds Morning Prayer Psalms 5:3-4 I pray to You, O Lord; you hear my voice in the morning, at sunrise.
