Good Shepherd, Bad Shepherd, Be a Shepherd! Todays gospel account follows up on last week s sending out of the Apostles by Jesus, on their ministry-missions. This week the Apostles return and are anxious to report on their activities and their successes. It would have been interesting to have been there to listen to them talking story about how each pair had done. Would they have given Jesus the straight story or tried to outdo the stories told by the others? Maybe something like this: Andrew says, I healed fifty people in one day. Then Matthew says, oh, yeah well I healed 150 people every day for an entire week!. Boys, boys, Jesus could have replied you all did great things but you, and I are very tired, let s get away for a bit of a rest and we can continue this conversation later. What a great and caring idea, from a compassionate shepherd. Then came the interruptions and interruptions are always a problem. Jesus and His Apostles had their plan (Plan-A) and the crowds had their plan (Plan-G if you remember a recent sermon of mine). Despite what happened, Jesus handled this interruption gracefully and takes care of the larger crowd-flock and put His Apostles on hold for the time being. He will get back to them later. At that moment He was truly being a Good Shepherd, having compassion for the people s needs over those of the Apostles and Himself. This contrasts the bad shepherds in our first reading where Prophet-Jeremiah speaks out against the self-serving shepherds that were scattering the sheep left to their care. The people were last to be served, if at all, and they took good care of themselves instead. Jeremiah prophesies about a righteous shoot to David who will reign and govern justly. In this gospel moment, Jesus compassion for the crowd was a fulfillment that He was the true, Good Shepherd. Popularity did not hamper Jesus from doing His ministry and mission for the Father in heaven. Whereas in the gospel, when He returned home and was rejected and couldn t perform any mighty deeds, today He teaches, ministers, and loves the sheep of His flock. And, by the way, they need His TLC (tender-loving care) more than the Apostles did at that moment. If you think this is great just wait until next week s episode of Jesus & His Apostles, what will they be doing next? Don t look ahead to next week s gospel, until you do something good for someone else. Yes, each of us are called to be Good Shepherds as Good Parents, spouses, friends, siblings, neighbors, religious & priests. Be a Shepherd!

Stewardship Corner Lesson 108 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church The Faith of the Centurion In no one in Israel have I found such faith. (Matt 8:5-17) The centurion believed that all Jesus had to do was speak and his servant would be healed. Have we taken our faith pulse lately? Is it as strong as that of the centurion? Can we say God s will be done? We all need God s healing for peace in our hearts, our homes, our churches and our country. Do we believe that our prayers are always answered? God always answers, but the solution may differ from that of our intent. God will always bring His peace to our crisis. Take the faith pulse and trust the Good Steward, Jesus. Today s 2nd Collection is for the SEMINARIAN EDUCATION FUND. We thank you in advance for your generosity, love and support of our Seminarians. Thank you for your donations. The bulletins on July 22 and 29, 2018 will not include the collection figures since the bulletins will be printed prior to the date of the collection each Sunday. This is only a temporary (2 weeks) delay as the printer will be out of town during this time. The collections will be reported in the August 5th Bulletin.

Fr. Vincent Trujillo will be filling in for Fr Mike while he is on vacation. Here is a little background on Fr Vincent. And please welcome him to our Church Community. Fr Vincent is 77 years of age and a native of Colorado, but was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He became a monk of Mount Angel Abbey in 1961 and remained a Brother until he was ordained in 1982. Fr. Vincent was an administrator at Mount Angel Seminary for 22 years before serving for 5 years as associate pastor of St. Mary s in Mount Angel and the next 5 years as pastor in the town of Gervais, a largely Hispanic community. Fr. Vincent was recalled to the monastery in 2007 and served as the monastery Guest Master for two years before being named the Prior of the monastery in 2009. Abbot Jeremy Driscoll retained him as Prior when he was elected Abbot in 2016. Fr. Vincent looks forward to a very different pastoral experience in Hawaii and hopes his coming to the parish will provide a fitting break for Father Mike Dalton. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL This is our count down week to VBS. If you would like to be a part of our mission project, the children will have a walk-a-thon on Friday, August 3. You may call the church office at 396-0551 to donate a small amount for each lap of walking the children accomplish. We would also love to have you join us to cheer on the children on the morning of August 3rd, from 9:30-10:00. As a fun part of Vacation Bible School, we like to have a snack that ties in with the bible story of the day. If you are able to donate any of these items, please drop them off at the church office. 2 boxes of Fruit Roll Ups for the Good Samaritan story. 2 packages of Keebler Elves cookies (little people) for Zacchaeus' story. 2 packages of chocolate pudding cups for the healing of the blind man story.

Please RSVP by September 1st volunteer@familypromisehawaii.org 548-7478 I hope you can all join us for this wonderful experience. Trissa Walter Music Director Holy Trinity Church twalter@rcchawaii.org Sacrament Class 2019 Update Holy Trinity will begin offering the sacrament of confirmation to all children above the age of reason (7 years) In the spring of 2019. We look forward to an exciting year of sacramental preparation! Your children must have a faith background on which to build an understanding of the sacraments. The Diocese of Honolulu requires at least one year religious formation prior to registration (and reception) of sacraments. This will mean additional classes for elementary and middle school children, and of course more teachers needed. Please contact Carrie at 393-6797, or the church office at 396-0551. HELP WANTED We are gathering pictures for our 2019 parish liturgical calendar and need your help. If you have any current photos of your ministries in action or events within the parish, please email them to Bob and Charlotte White at bcwhite@hawaiiantel.net. Who knows, you just might become a published photographer! Thank you for your support of Holy Trinity Church.
