THE APPOINTED PSALM Psalm 34: Benedicam Domino Anglican Chant: C.F. South 1 I will alway give thanks unto the LORD; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD; * the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O praise the LORD with me, * and let us magnify his Name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me; * yea, he delivered me out of all my fear. 5 They had an eye unto him, and were lightened; * and their faces were not ashamed. 6 Lo, the poor crieth, and the LORD heareth him; * yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD tarrieth round about them that fear him, * and delivereth them. 8 O taste, and see, how gracious the LORD is: * blessed is the man that trusteth in him. 9 O fear the LORD, ye that are his saints; * for they that fear him lack nothing. 10 The lions do lack, and suffer hunger; * but they who seek the LORD shall want no manner of thing that is good. 11 Come, ye children, and hearken unto me; * I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12 What man is he that lusteth to live, * and would fain see good days? 13 Keep thy tongue from evil, * and thy lips, that they speak no guile. 14 Eschew evil, and do good; * seek peace, and ensue it. 15 The eyes of the LORD are over the righteous, * and his ears are open unto their prayers. 16 The countenance of the LORD is against them that do evil, * to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth them, * and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart, * and will save such as be of an humble spirit. 19 Great are the troubles of the righteous; * but the LORD delivereth him out of all. 20 He keepeth all his bones, * so that not one of them is broken. 21 But misfortune shall slay the ungodly; * and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. 22 The LORD delivereth the souls of his servants; * and all they that put their trust in him shall not be destitute. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.
THE FIRST LESSON: Wisdom of Solomon 6: 12-16 Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for she will be found sitting at the gate. To fix one s thought on her is perfect understanding, And one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE MAGNIFICAT: Evening Service in G Charles Villiers Stanford My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. THE SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel s call and with the sound of God s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
THE NUNC DIMITTIS: Evening Service in G Stanford Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. The People stand. THE APOSTLES CREED (chanted by all) I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The people kneel for the prayers. THE PRAYERS The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. set to music by Philip Radcliffe Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
Ofiiciant: Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation O Lord, save the state. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy holy spirit from us. THE COLLECTS O God, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, One God, world without end. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love s sake. Amen. The people are seated. THE GREETING The Rev. E. Clifford Cutler During the singing of the following anthem, an offering will be taken to support choral music at Saint Paul s Church. This evening s service of worship is made directly possible by your contributions.
THE ANTHEM: Thee Will I Love Herbert Howells Conposed and first performed in 1970 to commemorate the massacre of the monks of the Abbey of Medehamstede, now Peterborough Cathedral (pictured on the front cover), on this day November the 9th, A.D. 870. Text: R.S. Bridges. Thee will I love, my God and King, Thee will I sing, my strength and tower; For evermore thee will I trust, O God most just of truth and power: Who all things hast in order placed, Yea, for thy pleasure hast created; And on thy throne unseen, unknown, reignest alone in glory seated. Set in my heart thy love I find; My wandering mind to thee thou leadest; My trembling hope, my strong desire with heavenly fire thou kindly feedest. Lo, all things fair thy path prepare, Thy beauty to my spirit calleth, Thine to remain in joy or pain, and count it gain, whate er befalleth. O more and more thy love extend, My life befriend with heavenly pleasure, that I may win thy pearl of price, thy paradise, thy countless treasure. Since but in thee I can go free from earthly care and vain oppression, this prayer I make for Jesu s sake that thou me take in thy possession. The people stand. THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING (said by all, standing) Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving kindness to us and to all thou hast made. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A PRAYER OF SAINT CHRYSOSTOM Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.
THE BLESSING All: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. HYMN 24 St. Clement Please remain standing as the procession leaves the church. All are invited to a reception in the parish hall.
