Sunday, December 13 th was the Feast day of Santa Lucia, always 12 days before Christmas (but not to be confused with The Twelve Days of Christmas, which ends with the Epiphany on January 6th). At St. Mary Mission in Coupeville, 8-year-old Alex Zimmerman dressed in a white dress to symbolize the innocence of young St. Lucy's martyrdom in Roman 0mes. The story goes that beau0ful young Lucy was to marry a wealthy, noble pagan man which would have meant forgoing her Chris0anity -- or at the very least giving birth to and raising non-chris0an children. But she refused to forsake Christ and refused to marry the powerful suitor, a choice that ul0mately lead to her death. Following popular tradi0on, our li5le Santa Lucia at St. Mary's wore a fes0ve crowning wreath with candles on top to light her way... and finally a bright red sash to symbolize the supreme sacrifice St. Lucy made for her faith in Christ. Because the pre5y young martyr was known for her compassion for Rome's suffering poor as well as for smuggling food to the early Chris0ans in hiding... her works of charity were "reenacted" at St. Mary by passing out cookies in the parish hall a9er Mass. Alex, our own li5le Santa Lucia, had help doing this as is the custom in some countries that widely observe this feast day. Santa Lucia s official helpers were Airel Samano-Losada, Kyrme Sotelo Castro and Jennifer Herrera. Meanwhile, this was also a big day for Alex because during the Sunday service on December 13 th she received the Rite of Acceptance, where she officially became a Catechumen, and began the RCIA journey to becoming a full member of the faith. The January 3rd Kids Epiphany Party is not exclusive to RE students. Children that are not enrolled in RE at St. Mary are welcome to join in the fun. However, the child will need for a parent or guardian to stay too. Advance notice of a non-re student attending would be appreciated (678-6536), but it is not mandatory. TODAY, December 20th is the last Sunday for purchasing your cane wreath that Katherine made for this Advent fundraiser for her trip to WYD in Krakow Poland 2016. Keep watch for future fundraisers. Thank you for your support. To help prepare our hearts for the Messiah s coming during Advent, and to symbolically help keep baby Jesus warm in the manger, the RE children are having a Stockings Drive, where we are collecting matching sets of socks for all ages, infant through seniors. The collection will be distributed to appropriate local programs serving the homeless, indigent, & financially needy individuals and families. Here are some interesting fact the children will learn: Socks are one of the most requested garments made among the homeless and victims in shelters escaping abuse. They are important for helping keep feet warm and in helping shoes and boots last longer. For information on Project Rachel see the flyers in the restrooms. Thank you.
