A Song from the Books of Psalms 134:1-2 and 1John 3:1 (2 x) Behold, bless ye the LORD, all [ye] servants of the LORD Lift up your hands [in] the sanctuary, and bless the LORD. (2 x) Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, (2 x) that we should be called the sons of God: Jesus Christ 2

John 4:46 (KJV) So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. This week boys and girls, we will begin a new chapter in our lesson entitle, Except Ye See Signs and Wonders in our study book Desire of Ages! 4

Today we will cover! pages 196 198 John 4:43 (KJV) Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee. John 4:44 (KJV) For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. John 4:45 (KJV) Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast. John 4:47 (KJV) When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. John 4:48 (KJV) Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. John 4:49 (KJV) The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. John 4:50 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. Genesis 32:26 (KJV) And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 5

Desire of Ages, p.196 The Galileans who returned from the Passover brought back the report of the wonderful works of Jesus. The judgment passed upon His acts by the dignitaries at Jerusalem opened His way in Galilee. Many of the people lamented the abuse of the temple and the greed and arrogance of the priests. They hoped that this Man, who had put the rulers to flight, might be the looked-for Deliverer. Now tidings had come that seemed to confirm their brightest anticipations. (Next Slide) 6

Desire of Ages, p.196 It was reported that the prophet had declared Himself to be the Messiah. {DA 196.1} But the people of Nazareth did not believe on Him. For this reason, Jesus did not visit Nazareth on His way to Cana. The Saviour declared to His disciples that a prophet has no honor in his own country. Men estimate character by that which they themselves are capable of appreciating. The narrow and worldly-minded judged of Christ by His humble birth, His lowly garb, and daily toil. (Next Slide) 7

Desire of Ages, p.196 They could not appreciate the purity of that spirit upon which was no stain of sin. {DA 196.2} The news of Christ's return to Cana soon spread throughout Galilee, bringing hope to the suffering and distressed. In Capernaum the tidings attracted the attention of a Jewish nobleman who was an officer in the king's service. A son of the officer was suffering from what seemed to be an incurable disease. Physicians had given him up to die; but when the father heard of Jesus, he determined to seek help from Him. 8

Question: Boys & girls, what did the Saviour declare to His disciples because of the unbelieving people of Nazareth? And by what does the narrow and worldly-minded judge Christ? If you know the Answer to this question Bubble up! Dear little ones! 9

Answer That a prophet has no honor in his own country. And His humble birth, His lowly garb, and daily toil. They could not appreciate the purity of that spirit upon which was no stain of sin.. 10

Desire of Ages, p.196 The child was very low, and, it was feared, might not live till his return; yet the nobleman felt that he must present the case in person. He hoped that a father's prayers might awaken the sympathy of the Great Physician. {DA 196.3} On reaching Cana he found a throng surrounding Jesus. With an anxious heart he pressed through to the Saviour's presence. His faith faltered when he saw only a plainly dressed man, dusty and worn with travel. (Next Slide) 11

Desire of Ages, p.197 He doubted that this Person could do what he had come to ask of Him; yet he secured an interview with Jesus, told his errand, and besought the Saviour to accompany him to his home. But already his sorrow was known to Jesus. Before the officer had left his home, the Saviour had beheld his affliction. {DA 197.1} But He knew also that the father had, in his own mind, made conditions concerning his belief in Jesus. Unless his petition should be granted, he would not receive Him as the Messiah. (Next Slide) 12

Question: Boys & girls, who was the Jewish nobleman? And why was he determined to seek help from Christ? If you know the Answer to this question Bubble up! Dear little ones! 13

An officer in the king's service. And his son was suffering from what seemed to be an incurable disease. Physicians had given him up to die. Let s learn a beautiful scripture song about The LORD will perfect [that which] concerneth me together dear ones! 14

Psalms 138:8 (KJV) The LORD will perfect [that which] concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, [endureth] for ever: forsake not the works of thine. own hands. Says the Word of the Lord! The LORD will perfect [that which] concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, [endureth] for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. This is the Word of the Lord! Psalms 138 verse 8 15 15

Desire of Ages, p.198 While the officer waited in an agony of suspense, Jesus said, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. {DA 198.1} The simple faith of the Samaritans, who asked for no miracle or sign Notwithstanding all the evidence that Jesus was the Christ, the petitioner had determined to make his belief in Him conditional on the granting of his own request. The Saviour contrasted this questioning unbelief with the simple faith of the Samaritans, who asked for no miracle or sign. (Next Slide) 16

Desire of Ages, p.198 His word, the ever-present evidence of His divinity, had a convincing power that reached their hearts. Christ was pained that His own people, to whom the Sacred Oracles had been committed, should fail to hear the voice of God speaking to them in His Son. {DA 198.2} Yet the nobleman had a degree of faith; for he had come to ask what seemed to him the most precious of all blessings. Jesus had a greater gift to bestow. (Next Slide) 17

Question: Boys & girls, by what condition would the nobleman s father believe in Jesus? And, what did Jesus say to the officer? If you know the Answer to this question Bubble up! Dear little ones! 18

Answer Unless his petition should be granted, he would not receive Him as the Messiah. And, Jesus said, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. 19

Question: Boys & girls, with what did the Saviour contrast this questioning unbelief? And, why was Christ pained? If you know the Answer to this question Bubble up! Dear little ones! 20

Answer With the simple faith of the Samaritans, who asked for no miracle or sign. And, that His own people, to whom the Sacred Oracles had been committed, should fail to hear the voice of God speaking to them in His Son.. Let s learn a beautiful scripture song together dear ones! 21 21

Deuteronomy 26:18-19 (KJV) And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that [thou] shouldest keep all his commandments; And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken. 22 22

Desire of Ages, p.198 He desired, not only to heal the child, but to make the officer and his household sharers in the blessings of salvation, and to kindle a light in Capernaum, which was so soon to be the field of His own labors. But the nobleman must realize his need before he would desire the grace of Christ. This courtier represented many of his nation. They were interested in Jesus from selfish motives. They hoped to receive some special benefit through His power, (Next Slide) 23

They were ignorant as to their spiritual disease, and saw not their need of divine grace. Behold I make all things New! Desire of Ages, p.198 and they staked their faith on the granting of this temporal favor; but they were ignorant as to their spiritual disease, and saw not their need of divine grace. {DA 198.3} Like a flash of light, the Saviour's words to the nobleman laid bare his heart. He saw that his motives in seeking Jesus were selfish. His vacillating faith appeared to him in its true character. In deep distress he that his doubt might cost the life of his son. (Next Slide) 24

Question: Boys & girls, what gift did Jesus desire to bestow to the officer, that was greater than the healing of his child? And, in what way did this courtier represent many of his nation? If you know the Answer to this question Dear ones, bubble up! 25

Answer To make the officer and his household sharers in the blessings of salvation, and to kindle a light in Capernaum; which was so soon to be the field of His own labors. And, they were interested in Jesus from selfish motives. They hoped to receive some special benefit through His power. 26

Desire of Ages, p.198 I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me He knew that he was in the presence of One who could read the thoughts, and to whom all things were possible. In an agony of supplication he cried, Sir, come down ere my child die. His faith took hold upon Christ as did Jacob, when, wrestling with the Angel, he cried, I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me. Genesis 32:26. {DA 198.4} 27

Gather around little ones! It s Story time! This section of our study was inspired by the Lord for all His precious little jewels. Our book selection is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Narrated by Our Dear Brother Grave 28

Chapter. 1-That Power is Given us to Become the Sons of God But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. John 1:12. {SD 12.1} Divine sonship is not something that we gain of ourselves. Only to those who receive Christ as their Saviour is given the power to become sons and daughters of God. The sinner cannot, by any power of his own, rid himself of sin. For the accomplishment of this result, he must look to a higher Power. John exclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." Christ alone has power to cleanse the heart. He who is seeking for forgiveness and acceptance can say only,-- "Nothing in my hand I bring; 29 29

Simply to Thy cross I cling." But the promise of sonship is made to all who "believe on his name." Every one who comes to Jesus in faith will receive pardon. {SD 12.2} The religion of Christ transforms the heart. It makes the worldly-minded man heavenly-minded. Under its influence the selfish man becomes unselfish, because this is the character of Christ. The dishonest, scheming man becomes upright, so that it is second nature to him to do to others as he would have others do to him. The profligate is changed from impurity to purity. He forms correct habits; for the gospel of Christ has become to him a savor of life unto life. {SD 12.3} 30 30

God was to be manifest in Christ, "reconciling the world unto himself." Man had become so degraded by sin that it was impossible for him, in himself, to come into harmony with Him whose nature is purity and goodness. But Christ, after having redeemed man from the condemnation of the law, could impart divine power, to unite with human effort. Thus by repentance toward God and faith in Christ, the fallen children of Adam might once more become "sons of God." {SD 12.4} When a soul receives Christ, he receives power to live the life of Christ. {SD 12.5} 31 31
