Welcome to Chichester Cathedral This booklet contains all you will need to follow the Cathedral Eucharist. Please take it home to aid your daily devotions. The booklet includes suggestions about posture, but it is important that individuals feel comfortable. This booklet is also available in a format with larger print. Please ask the stewards if you would like a copy. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer at the communion, please indicate this to one of the stewards before the Service. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use this, please switch your hearing aid to t. A collection will be taken in the hymn after The Peace. Many regular, even if infrequent, members of the congregation give by standing order. This helps the Cathedral to budget. If you would like to know more about this method of giving please see the information on the Pew Sheet. GIFT AID - If you are a UK taxpayer, it would help enormously if you would place your donation in a Gift Aid envelope (included in the service booklet) before putting it in the collection, because we can then reclaim 25p from HMRC for every 1 you give. The Cathedral Choristers are educated at the Prebendal School. For more information about the outstanding educational opportunities offered by the school please visit www.prebendalschool.org.uk. Children s activities - A crèche and children s group, Pebbles (ages 2-11), meet in the Canons Vestry during this service. If your children would like to join the group please ask a steward for more information. Parents are welcome too! Toy bags are also available during the service. 2

ORDER OF SERVICE Celebrant The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield, Precentor Please stand. Processional Hymn Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o er death hast won. Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o er death hast won. 3

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife, make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o er death hast won. Words: NEH 120 Edmond Budry (1854-1932) tr. Richard Hoyle (1875-1939) Music: Maccabeus George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) The president greets the people: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. Prayer of Preparation Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Choir sings Gloria in excelsis Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis 5

peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu: in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the onlybegotten Son, Jesu Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Music: Missa Brevis in D Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Let us pray. The Collect Almighty God, whose Son restored Mary Magdalene to health of mind and body and called her to be a witness to his resurrection: forgive our sins and heal us by your grace, that we may serve you in the power of his risen life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 6

Please sit. First Reading Song of Solomon 3: 1-4 Read by Vivien Ruddock Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but found him not. The sentinels found me, as they went about in the city. Have you seen him whom my soul loves? Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go until I brought him into my mother s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Choir sings Psalm 42: 1-10 Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks : so longeth my soul after thee, O God. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God : when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night : while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God? Now when I think thereupon, I pour out my heart by myself : for I went with the multitude, and brought them forth into the house of God; In the voice of praise and thanksgiving : among such as keep holy-day. 7

Why art thou so full of heaviness, O my soul : and why art thou so disquieted within me? Put thy trust in God : for I will yet give him thanks for the help of his countenance. My God, my soul is vexed within me : therefore will I remember thee concerning the land of Jordan, and the little hill of Hermon. One deep calleth another, because of the noise of the water-pipes : all thy waves and storms are gone over me. The Lord hath granted his loving-kindness in the daytime : and in the night-season did I sing of him, and made my prayer unto the God of my life. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5: 14-17 Read by Michael Baker The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8

Please stand. Hymn Glory to thee, O God, for all thy saints in light, who nobly strove and conquered in the well-fought fight. Their praises sing, who life outpoured by fire and sword for Christ their King. Thanks be to thee, O Lord, for saints thy Spirit stirred in humble paths to live thy life and speak thy word. Unnumbered they whose candles shine to lead our footsteps after thine. Lord God of truth and love, thy kingdom come, we pray; give us thy grace to know thy truth and walk thy way: that here on earth thy will be done, till saints in earth and heaven are one. Words: CP 217 H.C. A. Gaunt (1902-1983) Music: Harewood Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) 9

Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. John 20: 1-2, 11-18 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord ; and she told them that he had said these things to her. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 10

All remain standing as the Gospel Procession returns, and then sit for the Sermon. Sermon The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean Please stand. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 11

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The president introduces Please sit or stand. These responses are used: Prayers of Intercession Led by Linda Barratt Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. And at the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. 12

The Peace Please stand. God is love and those who live in love live in God and God lives in them. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace. All remain standing to sing the offertory hymn: Hymn God, we praise you, God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your Church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne, singing, Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone! 13

True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your Church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. Christ, at God s right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid. Raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray! Words: SP 201 Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Music: Rustington C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918) 14

The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you All and al - so with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good, our duty and our salvation, to praise you, the all-powerful Father, in every season, and on this holy day to celebrate the glory of your saints. In Mary Magdalene you kindled a fire of love for Christ, whose word had set her free. You gave her the courage of love to follow him even to the cross. Seeking her teacher after his death, so great was her longing that you made her the first to behold him risen from the dead, and the first to announce to the apostles his new and glorious risen life. Her words still ring throughout your Church, to strengthen faith and encourage hope in those who gather faithfully for prayer. And so with her, and all the citizens of heaven, we join our voices to acclaim your glory in this their joyful hymn of praise: 15

The Choir sings Sanctus and Benedictus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth, pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Eucharistic Prayer continues: Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 16

Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All 17

Please stand or sit. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. 18

Giving of Communion The president invites the people to communion: Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The president and people receive communion. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion if they wish. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come to the altar rail with everybody else and bow your head. During communion, the Choir sings Agnus Dei Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. 19

Communion Motet Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine, esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true Body, born of Mary, spotless Virgin s virgin birth; thou who truly hangedst weary on the cross for sons of earth; thou whose sacred side was riven, whence the water flowed and blood, O may st thou, dear Lord, be given at death s hour to be my food. Words: 14 th century Music: Ave verum corpus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Hymn during Communion Blessèd Jesu, Mary s son, for mankind to earth thou camest, but the saving battle won, now at God s right hand thou reignest: on thy people pour thy blessing, gathered here, thy name confessing. By this sacramental sign, token of thy bitter passion, through these gifts of bread and wine thine own image in us fashion: by this food thy grace doth send us from all ills of soul defend us. 20

In this mystery of grace which we celebrate before thee, come, O Saviour, show thy face to the faithful who adore thee: all our sins by thee forgiven, grant us here the joys of heaven. Words: NEH 275 G. B. Timms (1910-1997) Music: Liebster Jesu (Dessau) Melody by J. R. Ahle (1625-1673) (Mülhausen, 1664) Harmony by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Prayer after Communion Let us pray. Please stand. God of life and love, whose risen Son called Mary Magdalene by name and sent her to tell of his resurrection to his apostles: in your mercy, help us, who have been united with him in this eucharist, to proclaim the good news that he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. 21

Hymn Father in whom we live, in whom we are and move, the glory, power, and praise receive of thy creating love. Let all the angel throng give thanks to God on high, while earth repeats the joyful song, and echoes to the sky. Incarnate Deity, let all the ransomed race render in thanks their lives to thee for thy redeeming grace. The grace to sinners showed ye heavenly choirs proclaim, and cry: Salvation to our God, salvation to the Lamb! Spirit of holiness, let all thy saints adore thy sacred energy, and bless thine heart-renewing power. No angel tongues can tell thy love s ecstatic height, the glorious joy unspeakable, the beatific sight. Words: CP 417 Charles Wesley (1707-1788) 22 Music: Diademata George Elvey (1816-1893)

The Dismissal The Lord be with you and also with you. May Christ, who makes saints of sinners, who has transformed those we remember today, raise and strengthen you that you may transform the world; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. The congregation joins the Choir in singing the dismissal: Priest All 23
