The Holy Eucharist Christmas Day December 25, 2013 11:15am Trinity Wall Street an Episcopal Parish in the City of New York

Welcome to Trinity Church. Please add your voice and heart to the worship: sing the hymns and pray the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. Prelude Noël Suisse Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772) Entrance Rite Rector s Welcome Processional Hymn standing 2

Opening Acclamation Celebrant People Words: John Francis Wade (1711-1786); tr. Frederick Oakeley (1802-1880) and others. Music: Adeste fideles, present form of melody att. John Francis Wade (1711-1786); harm. The English Hymnal, 1906 Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. People remain standing as the Choir sings Gloria in excelsis Deo from Missa ad praesepe George Malcolm (1917-1997) Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu: in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day The Celebrant prays a prayer based on the theme of the day. 3

The Word of God First Lesson seated Isaiah 52:7-10 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 98 seated sung by the Choir Ivor Algernon Adkins (1869-1953) Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord. Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. Second Lesson Hebrews 1:1-12 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 4

The Nicene Creed said by all, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People The people respond to each petition with Hear our prayer. The Peace standing Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The People offer a greeting of peace to one another. Announcements seated 6

Offering Anthem In the Bleak Midwinter Harold Darke (1888-1976) In the bleak midwinter, Frosty wind made moan. Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone. Snow had fallen snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter long ago. Our God, Heav n cannot hold him, Nor earth sustain. Heav n and earth shall flee away, when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter, A stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim, Worship night and day, A breast full of milk, And a manger full of hay, Enough for Him, whom angels, Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel, which adore. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart. Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) The Holy Communion In the Holy Communion we experience the Real Presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; all adults and children who desire to receive Him are encouraged to come forward. The Great Thanksgiving standing Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The prayer continues and the people remain standing as the Choir sings Sanctus from Missa ad praesepe George Malcolm Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The prayer continues until Celebrant Therefore, according to his command, O Father, People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The prayer continues until Celebrant By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. People AMEN. 7

The Lord s Prayer Setting: Marilyn Haskel, 2007 8

Fraction Anthem Music: Mode 1 melody; adapt. Mason Martens (1933-1991) Communion and Prayers for Healing Come forward for Communion at the direction of the ushers. Hold your hands in front of you to receive the bread, and help guide the chalice to your lips. Gluten-free bread is available. If you would like to pray with someone confidentially for any need in your life, go through the archway at the front right-hand side of the church to the Chapel, and someone will meet you there before or after you receive Communion. Anthem A Spotless Rose Herbert Howells (1892-1983) A spotless rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers foreshowing, of Jesse promised fruit; its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and in the dark midnight. The rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest Maid; for through our God s great love and might, the blessed babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter s night. 14th century 9

Communion Hymn sung by all Words: Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348-410?); tr. John Mason Neale (1818-1866) and Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877), alt. Music: Divinum mysterium, Sanctus trope, 11th cent.; adapt. Piae Cantiones, 1582 Prayer after Communion said by all, standing Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10

The Christmas Blessing May Almighty God, who sent his Son to take our nature upon him, bless you in this holy season, scatter the darkness of sin, and brighten your heart with the light of his holiness. Amen. May God, who sent his angels to proclaim the glad news of the Savior s birth, fill you with joy, and make you heralds of the Gospel. Amen. May God, who in the Word made flesh joined heaven to earth and earth to heaven, give you his peace and favor. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. 11
