EXPRESSING THANKFUL GRATITUDE The month of November gives us the opportunity to set aside time to express thanks to our Lord. We give Him praise with an attitude of gratitude. Fulton J. Sheen wrote: "An interesting phenomenon in children is that gratitude or thankfulness comes relatively late in their young lives. They almost have to be taught it; if not, they grow up thinking that the world owes them a living." I read about a mother who didn't want to force her son to say "Thank you" unless he really felt like it saying it. She said, "If I teach him to say 'thank you' when he doesn't feel thankful, I'm teaching him that it's OK to be a hypocrite." That's not even close to what gratitude is. Gratitude is not just an emotion, it's an action. The act of saying "thank you" is for the benefit of the other person. It's about their feelings, not yours. The same is true when it comes to saying "thank you" to God. Thankfulness is the proper response to the goodness of God. We say "thank you" because he is good, not just because we happen to feel good. That's why the Psalms so often refer to the "sacrifice of thanksgiving" -- it's an act of obedience, not just an emotional outburst. David said to the Lord, "I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call on the name of the Lord. (Psalm 116:17) Like children, we need to learn how to be thankful. Most of the time, when we consider all the good things God has done for us, we'll feel thankful. Even when our feelings don't cooperate, we need to sincerely express gratitude, offering God a sacrifice of thanksgiving for the love, grace and mercy he has given us. Let s be faithful to be thankful for our Lord s faithfulness to meet our needs. Let s give Him praise for the many blessings He has given us. With Jesus help, let us continually offer our sacrifice of praise to God by proclaiming the glory of his name. (Hebrews 13:15) Let your lives overflow with joy and thanksgiving for all He has done. (Colossians 2:7) Always give thanks for everything to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:20) Thanking our Lord with you, Pastor John 1

Youngchurch Fall 2017 Update It has been a fairly typical fall for Youngchurch. We average between 5-8 students per week, and always encourage our kids to bring their friends. We are using The Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide for Teenagers once again, at the students request. It s a fun story that combines a zombie takeover of the world with life lessons from the Bible each lesson ties in to a Bible passage, and has a challenge for the week. This last week, we talked about how important it is to God that we keep our promises. After all, God has kept every promise He s made to us why shouldn t we keep our promises to Him and to others? Our challenge for the week was to read over Psalm 15, and then to pray and ask God to help us be people who are worthy to worship in God s sanctuary, people who keep our promises, even when it hurts. Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts. Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever. I challenge you this week do you lead a blameless life, do what is right, speak the truth? Do you refuse to gossip? Do you keep your promises, even when it hurts? 3 Melissa Meilinger Youth Director FBCOC
