How to Navigate the New Testament Lesson 4: Look to the Future TM.com

How to Navigate the New Testament Lesson 4 Look to the Future TM Unit Summary For many kids, the Bible seems so big and complex that they feel overwhelmed. They don t know how to start mining the riches in the New Testament. In this unit, you will take children on a tour that will unlock the mysteries of God s Word and give them confidence to navigate through the New Testament. Your kids will learn how the New Testament fits together. You will show that the 27 New Testament books fall into three groups: History, Living Letters, and Prophecy. In addition, they will meet some key authors of the New Testament. Finally, you will guide children to apply Bible truths to their lives. Lesson Summary While the final book of the Bible can be confusing to many and certainly is argued over by others, many tend to miss the ultimate message. It isn t to figure out exactly what is going to happen in the future it is to understand that in the end times, Jesus will be victorious, and evil will lose! God is going to triumph, and His enemy, Satan, finally will be defeated. Rather than get bogged down in the details of this amazing book, children can approach it as an intriguing and encouraging book that tells us not to worry about the future because in the end times, Jesus will be the big winner, and we are on the winning team! Disciple Targets In this lesson, your children will... Know One Prophecy Book reveals what God will do in the last days Feel Fascinated about the end-time events that God has planned Do Decide to personally get ready to remain faithful to the end 1 Paul s Power Principle: God s final message is that Jesus wins!

Karl Bastian / Kidology.org Welcome! Guess the Score Supplies: paper, pens, and a bucket As kids arrive, have them write down their guesses about a game that will be played later. It is important to word it exactly this way: We are going to play a game today, and I want you to try and write down what you think the score of the game will be before it even begins. See if you can get it right. I guarantee you that I can tell you the score of any game before it even begins! Show a folded piece of paper explain that you have written your score guess on the paper and that later you will reveal the score of the game after the game is played. Really build up the fact that while you don t know what the final score will be, you already have made your prediction, and you know it is correct! Note: You have written 0-0 because the score of the game before it even begins is zero to zero! This will be explained in more detail during the lesson. For now, just have kids write their guesses, fold them up, write their names on the outside, and drop the papers in a bucket. 2

Let s Meet-n-Greet! Invite the kids to introduce themselves to the kids around them; have each try to guess how old the others are, their favorite numbers, and their middle names. Then they tell the answers. How many guessed correctly? Leaders mingle and play, too! Then the main leader says, There is no way we can guess all that, but God knows everything about us! Leaders, be sure to stop whatever you are doing to move through the audience and greet the children, especially those you do not recognize. Announce any birthdays for the week. (See the How to Use DiscipleTown guide for quick and easy ways to acknowledge visitors and birthdays.) Let s Worship! Recommended Song: Giant, from God Rocks, Cry Out!, available on Kidology.org We all face giants, but when we have God on our side we know that we can win, and the giant will fall every time! In our weakness, God can make us strong! Puppet Intro Leader & puppet introduce today s lesson. You will find a scripted version of this intro at the end of the lesson. Puppet is afraid to come out. (Perhaps he is even still dressed in pajamas!) When he finally does, he explains that he stayed up late the night before and watched a scary movie on TV about the end of the world; then he couldn t sleep because he was worrying about how the world is going to end! He frantically asks the leader, Will we be invaded by aliens? Will we run out of food and all starve? Will there be a giant earthquake or tsunami? Or will some huge gigantic animal grow bigger than all of us and eat us and take over the world? Leader asks, Where are you getting all of these crazy ideas? Puppet says, Each of those was based on very credible sources. Leader says, Would these credible sources be movies? Puppet says, Credible movies! Leader says, Are your parents aware that you are watching these end-of-the-world movies? Puppet says, Um, I think so. Leader says, We ll talk about that later, but not in front of the kids. But first of all, I can tell you for sure, I know the world is not going to end in any of those ways. Puppet says, I knew it! Leader says, You knew what? Puppet says, I knew it was going to be an airborne deadly virus that wipes us all out! Noooooo! Leader says, Um, no. It s not that either. Puppet relaxes. Leader says, Let me guess, another movie? Puppet just nods. Leader continues. [Puppet name], God has already told us how the world is going to end, and it ends with Jesus winning and evil losing; and He showed it all to one of the apostles named John, who wrote about it in the book of Revelation. He showed it to him in a dream, so we don t understand what all of the images mean exactly, but this we do know: Jesus is going to come again. Those who have accepted Jesus are going to be raised from the dead and meet Him in the sky, evil will be judged, and God is going to make a new heaven and a new earth and usher in a brand-new era of life that will last forever and ever and will have none of the bad stuff of this world! Puppet says, Wow, that sounds pretty awesome! Leader says, It is more awesome than you can even imagine. Puppet says, I don t know. I can imagine pretty awesome. How awesome is it gonna be? Leader says, The Bible says, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, neither has even entered into the mind of man what God has prepared for those who love Him. That means you can t even imagine what God is working on for this final stage. And the book of Revelation gives us a little peek into it. Puppet says, Wow, and I ve never even read that book. I m gonna go read it right now! 3

Let s Play! Bible Book Baseball: Living Letters to Christians Series! Note: Use the New Testament Tour found in the Additional Resources download to motivate kids to learn more about the New Testament. Use questions from the tour as you lead the children in a Bible Baseball game. Set up: Create a baseball infield around the outer edge of your room. The bases can be made of poster board, or you may simply mark out areas on the floor with tape. Contestants begin on the stage, which is home plate. Label first base History, second base Living Letters, and third base Prophecy. Two Options: You can divide into two teams (such as sides of the room or boys vs. girls) or simply have children compete as individuals. (Individual play is more likely to encourage personal study during the week.) You may be able to combine the two so that you have fun competition during the service for team points, but reward those who make it around the bases as well. Rules of Play: The leader calls out questions from the New Testament Tour Guide. (See sample questions below.) Use only questions from the Prophecy book (Revelation) for today s game. Children race to raise their hands and provide the correct answer. The first child to answer correctly gets to come to home plate to begin working his or her way around the bases. Once a child has made it around all four bases, he or she returns to the audience; the child still can compete to do the bases again if time allows. Sample Questions: 1. Revelation s theme is Jesus the. 2. Revelation s action step is to remain. Multi-play Option: The purpose of this game is less about the game and more about the repetition of the content and the children learning the biblical content of the books. Therefore, the more who are participating the better. In order to speed the game play and allow more children to advance, though only one leader may be reading the questions, you can have multiple leaders choosing children to compete. You can have as many children chosen to answer and advance as you have leaders to pick and listen to answers! In other words, if you have six leaders, after the question is read, it can be the first six kids to raise their hands and give the correct answer to the nearest leader who advance. Each of those six leaders will look for the nearest child who raises a hand first, walk over to the child, and listen to the answer. You can post a leader at each base to determine who on the base was the first to raise a hand to advance off that base and move forward to the next base. Continue the game week to week if you wish. Keep track of what square kids were on, and let them pick up where they left off the week before. This way you can set a time limit for the game, such as ten minutes, and even use a timer and play until time is up. The leaders at each base can write down who was on that base before the kids sit down. On this final week, add the Revelation questions, emphasizing that the last section of the New Testament is Prophecy. Of course, repeat all the books and any questions from the previous three sections. After each question is answered, reinforce it by repeating the question and emphasizing which part of the New Testament it came from. These are short but important teaching moments. 4

Connect with Your Kids Supplies: a picture of you as a child (display in PowerPoint if possible) When you were a child, what did you think you were going to be or do when you grew up? How different is your job or life now than what you envisioned when you were a child? Share that original dream or vision you had as a child with your students, and then compare it with what you do now. Don t be negative, but share how God has guided your life in directions you never could have imagined when you were young. Say, You have no idea what amazing things God has in store for you! (You may want to incorporate Jeremiah 29:11.) Talk about how even though you can t know what the future holds, you know who holds the future, and so you don t need to worry about the future. Let your personal confidence about the future be evident. We live in a fearful world, and kids can be very uneasy about the future. Your firm confidence in God for the future can be contagious! DiscipleTown Visitor [Your State] Jones* (Indiana-Jones-type character for example, Colorado Jones or Wisconsin Ted or Virginia Virginia. ) Dressed as an adventurer, carrying a Bible, a wide variety of tickets, membership applications (paper printouts), and a laptop. Jones hair is combed, and he is dressed nicely, but he is evidently quite concerned and worried. He looks like he s been up all night. Jones: Excuse me, I m so sorry. Do you mind if I use your table again? I have so much stuff...i... [Voice trails off.] Leader: [Jumps in to help.] Oh, my, you are very busy with your research today! Jones: Yeah. I got to the end of the New Testament. Leader: What did you think? Jones: Well, I don t know. There is lot of crazy stuff that happens at the end. That last book doesn t seem at all like the others with its talk of beasts and war! Leader: Ahh, you must have been reading the book of Revelation the book of the future. Jones: [Looks up in shock a bit scared.] F-f-future? Leader: Yes. Revelation is a book of Prophecy. God uses this book to show us what will happen at the end of the world. Jones: Oh man. I gotta get to work. [Scrambles through his papers and fires up his laptop with great urgency give him a few moments to act this out.] Nope, that s not it no mention of it here! Book of Kells? Nope, don t want that. Book of Secrets? Well, sounds interesting, but it s not the same! Oh man, I ll never find the membership application! Leader: Um, [Your State Jones], what are you looking for? You seem really stressed! Jones: I am stressed. The end of the world is coming, and the only way to escape it is to have your name written in this Book of Life but I can t find an application online or anywhere for this. How am I supposed to escape this horrible ending if the application doesn t exist? Leader: [Smiles gently.] [Your State Jones], listen to me. You won t find a membership application anywhere! Jones: [Throws up his hands, exasperated.] Well, that s just great! Now what do I do? Leader: Well, do you remember that man named Jesus that you were researching? 5

Jones: Oh, yeah. Jesus. I got quite distracted by all this end-of-the-world stuff. I nearly forgot about Him! Leader: Well, the reason Jesus came was to provide a way for each of us to have our names written in the Lamb s Book of Life! Jesus came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life! Jones: So you are saying the same Jesus who died, then came alive again, the same Jesus whom so many people followed even when it was illegal, the same Jesus who helps us become people full of true love, is the same man who will help me get into the Book of Life? Leader: Yes, you see, when we look in the mirror, all the things in our lives that are messed up, that is sin. Jesus showed us that He loved each of us so much that He took the punishment for our sin so that we could be saved. Our love for Jesus transforms our lives so that we get really good at loving others and helping them to meet Jesus, too! Jones: Wow, that is amazing love all for me? Wow, I see why this New Testament is so valuable. Thank you for sharing it with me! I think I m going to read more. It looks like I have a big decision to make! [Exits, much more relaxed and at peace.] Leader: [To audience:] You see, boys and girls, some people are scared that in 2012 or sometime soon the world will end. But the book of the future Revelation tells us how it will end. When we have Jesus in our lives, we don t have to be afraid of any of it because we know how it ends, and we know that Jesus is the way to be saved! *CHARACTERS: These are suggested characters and names. Please feel free to change or adjust according to the actors and props you have available. 6

EXPLORE SCRIPTURE Seize on the children s interest and direct them into God s Word. Let s Search! Bible Dash Supplies: Bibles Ask all kids with Bibles to participate, or invite a few volunteers to come to the front. As children hold Bibles closed with hands on covers, state the Bible reference twice, then on the command SEARCH! have the students race to locate the verse. Once they have a finger on the verse, they can stand and call out, FOUND IT! Have the first child read the verse aloud while you project the verse on a screen via PowerPoint. See suggestions below for comments on each verse. Keep your comments brief and to the point of the lesson. 2 Corinthians 4:18 Psalm 37:37 Jeremiah 29:11 Romans 8:18 1 Corinthians 2:9 1 Timothy 4:10 Titus 3:7 We fix our eyes on what is unseen, what will last forever. A future awaits those who seek peace. God has a great future planned for you. Our present problems are nothing compared with our wonderful future. We can t even imagine what God has in store for us! We have put our hope in the living God. Because of God s grace, we have the hope of eternal life. Paul s Power Principle: God s final message is that Jesus wins! Click here to change text Suggested Bible Narrative The Ten Maidens Matthew 25:1 13 The story of the ten girls five were ready, and five were not! Will you be ready when Jesus returns? Let s Learn! Live as God s People Supplies: handmade deck of cards (see below), deck of cards, envelope, pen, paper Prediction Trick: Beforehand, make a deck of cards in which all the cards are exactly the same. The more homemade they look, the better. (Don t make on a computer hand-draw them!) Also have a real deck of playing cards. (Use a giant deck for better visibility.) Choose two children from the audience to help you. Make a big deal that you are going to have one child pick a card, and you will have predicted the card he or she picks ahead of time. Show a blank piece of paper and then write your prediction on it secretly (in big writing with a thick pen). Seal it in the envelope and have the other child hold it after showing the envelope is empty. Next, show the homemade deck of cards that are all the same, and don t show the numbered sides; just have the volunteer pick one when you fan them out, then have them show it to the audience. With great fanfare, reveal your prediction in the envelope, and how they match! The audience will be skeptical and demand to see the other cards, and reluctantly you finally give in. They see that every card is the same, so the trick was lame, you admit. After a pause, you ask if it would be a better trick if you did it with a real deck of cards. 7

Bring out the real deck of cards and clearly show all the different cards. Just be careful not to show the top card, which you have memorized. Again, with a great display of confidence, make your prediction, seal it, and, switching volunteers, do the real trick. Explain, however, you are going to use a double cut to make sure the selection is completely random. Holding the stack of cards facedown, fan through them with your thumbs and tell the second volunteer this time to tell you when to stop at any time they want cut the deck there, and turn the top half over. Then continuing from there (it s important they say stop about halfway or less down), tell them to say stop again whenever they want. When they do, you turn all the cards from that point over again. The top card (that you memorized) will now be the first facedown card! So you say, Okay, you have double-cut the deck, so we will take the first facedown card and that will be your selection! Have the child pull the card off and show the audience. Be sure you are the last person to see it, and when you do, look surprised and a little panicked. But go to the envelope, and the kids will be surprised you were right! Admit you used a trick to make your prediction; only God can truly predict the future. Today our final section of the Bible is only one book, and it is all about what will happen in the future. However, God intentionally used a lot of symbols to keep much of it a mystery. He didn t spell it all out but He did give us the main message: God wins, evil loses. Symbols: Show some symbols of sports teams or cars or superheroes or other things you know your kids will recognize without the words. (Place in the bonus template slides provided. Due to copyright regulations we cannot provide these for you, but it is best for you to contextualize for your geographic area.) Explain that symbols stand for other things. Revelation is filled with symbols. Many of the things in Revelation are not real, but they stand for things that are real. Scholars study this book and have a lot of ideas of what these symbols mean. No one knows for sure on everything, but this we do know for sure: God wins, and evil loses! And you want to be on the winning side! BONUS POWERPOINT: For those wanting to dig deeper, the Supplemental Resources download folder contains a bonus PowerPoint with slides outlining the New Testament books and highlighting each book s theme, theme verse, and action step. Customize a presentation to teach kids the Prophecy book, Revelation. Dee s Disciple Tip: I don t know what tomorrow holds, but I know who holds tomorrow. The whole point of Revelation is that God is going to win, and our enemy is going to lose. Be on the winning team! KeyVerse Topic: The New Testament s Purpose Reference: John 20:30-31 Memorization Activity: By this time, many kids should know the verses by memory. Invite children who ve memorized it to come onstage and recite the verses. Emphasize that one of the reasons we know the Bible is God s Word is because of all the prophecies that came true. The book of Revelation is filled with prophecies yet to be fulfilled, but the Bible has a track record of being reliable and accurately predicting things that are yet to come. So we believe the future will see the things described in this amazing final book! 8

INSPIRE ACTION Encourage kids to apply the Bible truth to their lives. Dramatize the Point Meet the Author Every week during this unit a different biblical author will visit DiscipleTown to talk about the book (or books) of the Bible he wrote and why and how he wrote them. The author will read one of his favorite passages and then do a book signing at the end of the service. (If you have a time machine, that would be a fun addition to this activity!) This week John is here to talk to the children about the book of Revelation. A basic summary of the dialogue appears below however, the actor is encouraged to build on this and ad-lib. This is only a suggested text. It is not intended to be memorized. John is wearing plain Bible-times clothes. If possible, have an old writing table with a large book, quill pen, and ink. He s rubbing his eyes, just recovering from a very vivid vision. Wow! I really need to write this down before I forget it. I don t really even understand what I saw. It was so strange. He notices boys and girls. Oh, hi! I m so sorry, you will have to excuse me, but I was just praying and God took me up to heaven and showed me some amazing things that will happen in the future. They were so real, and I must write them down. He sits down at the table/desk and begins to write; he stops and looks at the children and pauses his writing. You know, I spent a lot of time with Jesus when He was on earth. He often spoke of the kingdom of God and what it would be like to see one day. Today, I saw it with my own eyes in a vision! The amazing thing is, there is coming a generation that will get to witness these events firsthand. They will understand what it all means and will make sense of it all. But for now I must write! It only stays with me a little while, and since I am under house arrest, I have nothing but time. If you ll excuse me, I have to write this vision down. He takes his journal and leaves. Object Talks inavigate the New Testament PROPHECY Supplies: video projection The videos in this unit feature a fun character named ireed Dabook who helps kids learn how to navigate the New Testament by using his GPS device (God s Powerful Scripture device). He explain the sections of the Bible and gives a brief overview of the books of the Bible in each featured section covered in this video. Featured NT books: Prophecy book Let s Talk! Small Group Discussion Small Group Activity: Invite the kids to turn, introduce themselves, and take turns playing this quick game: I m thinking of a number between 1 and 10. They think of a number, and the kids around them try to guess what it is. Then for fun try this game with your kids, and you ll seem like a mind reader: 1. Pick a number between 1 and 10. 9

on presented by month day year Awarded to award 2. Multiply that number by 9. 3. If you have a two-digit number, add the numbers together. 4. Subtract 5. 5. Match your number with the corresponding letter of the alphabet. 6. Pick a country that starts with that letter. 7. Pick an animal that starts with the last letter of your country. 8. Pick a fruit that starts with the last letter of your animal. Once they have all completed the exercise, ask them, Are you thinking of a Kangaroo eating an Orange in Denmark? (Note: 98% of people will answer with kangaroos in Denmark when given this exercise. If not, they are among the 2% of the population whose minds are different enough to think of something else!) Discussion Questions: 1. Why do you suppose God included the book of Revelation in the Bible? 2. Sometimes we can get fearful of the future, of what might happen! How can reading Revelation help us? 3. What should we do if we don t understand what we are reading in the Bible, or the book of Revelation? 4. What is the most important thing to remember about the book of Revelation? for Good Role-Modeling DiscipleTown Super Citizen For this lesson, have New Believer Certificates ready for those who choose to trust Christ to forgive their sins and be their Savior (available in the Additional Resources download). Let s Pray! Dear Jesus, thank You for the amazing book of Revelation. We thank You that You already know the end, and that You have made a way for us to be on the winning side your side! Thank You that we do not have to be afraid because in You we always have hope. Help us to have courage to share that hope with others so they can get to know You also. In Your holy name, amen. For the Home DiscipleTown Table Talker: Give each child a copy of this week s DiscipleTown Table Talker. Be sure to show the kids how to put it together and encourage them to ask their parents to lead family devotions three times this week. Parent Email: Copy and send the email below to help your parents connect with their kids during the week. Send them early in the week, but not on Sunday. As a courtesy, be sure parents have opted to receive these emails. Review and edit as necessary to reflect the lesson elements you have used. You can also find this email as a Microsoft Word document in your download bundle. Dear Mom and Dad, This is the final lesson of our brief exploration of the New Testament. We ended our investigation with a study of the book of Revelation. Often this book is confusing and can sometimes cause children and adults alike to become fearful of what will happen at the end. As you discuss with your child(ren) this week, encourage them not to be afraid because Jesus wins and we are on Jesus side! Use the DiscipleTown Table Talkers to create more opportunities to discuss the idea of the future, and how God s plan comes into play today. Let us know if you run into questions or challenges that you may not know how to answer, and we will do our best to help. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of speaking into your child(ren) s lives. Building young disciples, [Your Name] 11

BONUS MATERIALS Use these options to extend your time or as substitutes for the ideas above. Chip s Snack Time! Supplies: graham crackers, chocolate frosting, bananas, strawberries, marshmallows Lay out all the different ingredients and begin to talk to the children about the amazing snack they are going to have! Tell them that each of these ingredients is just a highlight of the taste to come when they put them all together. Allow the kids to put together whatever combination of ingredients they would like and enjoy! Revelation gives us a peek at the future not only judgment but heaven! The same way each ingredient tastes great on its own but amazing when put together, God gives us little ingredients of our future now to make us hungry for the amazing things to come in heaven! Additional Ideas Mailed Predictions Have the kids write out some predictions of things they think will happen this week and then seal them in envelopes and write their names on the outside. You can give them some suggestions such as my mom will lose her keys or my dad will buy me ice cream or I ll find a dollar. Collect the envelopes. You can either give them their envelopes back in a week (or month) to see how many predictions came true, or you can mail them to their homes. Close by telling kids that even though not many of their predictions may come true, they can trust God because He does know the future, and they can always trust Him! 12

Puppet Intro The End DIRECTOR S NOTES The words in italics are notes for you and your puppeteers; they are not to be read aloud. Puppet is afraid to come out. When leader finally coaxes it, it is still dressed in pajamas and shaking. Leader: Wow! Are you okay, [Puppet name]? Puppet: I stayed up late last night and watched a scary movie on TV. Leader: Oh. Was it about monsters? Puppet: No. It was about the end of the world. Then I couldn t sleep because I was worried about how the world is going to end! [Asks frantically:] Will we be invaded by aliens? Will we run out of food and all starve? Will there be a giant earthquake or tsunami? Or will some huge gigantic animal grow bigger than all of us and eat us and take over the world? Leader: Where are you getting all of these crazy ideas? Puppet: [Indignant:] I beg your pardon. Each of those was based on very credible sources. Leader: Would these credible sources be movies? Puppet: Credible movies! Leader: Are your parents aware that you are watching these end-of-the-world movies? Puppet: Um, I think so. Leader: We ll talk about that later, but not in front of the kids. But first of all, I can tell you for sure, I know the world is not going to end in any of those ways. Puppet: I knew it! Leader: You knew what? Puppet: I knew it was going to be an airborne deadly virus that wipes us all out! Noooooo! Leader: Um, no. It s not that either. [Puppet visibly relaxes.] Let me guess, another movie? [Puppet nods.] [Puppet name], God has already told us how the world is going to end, and it ends with Jesus winning and evil losing; and He showed it all to one of the apostles named John, who wrote about it in the book of Revelation. Puppet: Wow, that sounds pretty awesome! Leader: It is more awesome than you can even imagine. Puppet: I don t know. I can imagine pretty awesome. How awesome is it gonna be? Leader: The Bible says, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, neither has even entered into the mind of man what God has prepared for those who love Him. That means you can t even imagine what God is working on for this final stage. And the book of Revelation gives us a little peek into it. Puppet: Wow, and I ve never even read that book. I m gonna go read it right now! *PUPPET: Develop a puppet character to use regularly. The children will get to know the personality and enjoy these regular visits.
