From the Pastor's Desk December 18, 2011 The leaves are falling and the temperature is dropping, yet our God remains faithful. ADVENT SEASON November 27 December 24 2 (Pulpit Attire is Purple) The Christian Year opens with the Advent season. Advent means coming or arrival. This season emphasizes expectancy and preparation expectancy of the coming of Christ and preparation for His coming again. The color for Advent is purple; it speaks of penitence and is associated with Christ as King, purple being a royal color. General Theme For This Quarter: The study this quarter focuses on God s covenant through Abraham. The theological emphasis is on faith. God promised Abraham that through him all the nations of the earth would be blessed. That promise was passed on from generation to generation until it was ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The lessons for t this quarter are taken from Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Galatians. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: God s Covenant tells the story of God s promise to Abraham. The first three lessons are studies in Genesis. These narratives from Genesis are appropriate for Advent because they point us to Christ s coming. The fourth lesson (the Christmas lesson) leaps forward from Genesis to Luke and Galatians where we hear on Mary s lips that she will give birth to Christ, the seed of Abraham s promise. THIS WEEK S LESSON: GOD ESTABLISHES A FAITHFUL PEOPLE GOD S COVENANT THE LORD PROVIDES Genesis 22:1 2, 6 14 Abraham is instructed to offer his only son, Isaac, to the Lord. He proceeds until an angel of the Lord tells him to stop. Abraham proves his faith by being obedient to God. NEXT WEEK S LESSON: December 25, 2011 ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE Luke 1:46 55 UNIT #1 Mary expresses praise and gratitude toward god for what He was going to do for the world through her. In these verses, often referred to as the Magnificat, Mary sees God as concerned for the poor, oppressed, and lowly. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! NAACP Membership Sunday For more than one hundred years the NAACP has been the leading advocate for social justice and equality for people of color, and we can proudly boast such because of our Members. Since 1909, the NAACP has been supported by countless members and has led the fight for freedom, justice, and equality. NAACP membership makes a positive difference in the lives of Americans. While the NAACP has won many victories, the times ahead are critical. Membership helps to close the gaps in the staggering statistics that so blatantly attest to the racial disparities in the United States. Our best hope for protecting the freedom of people and advancing the gains of the NAACP is by becoming a member, renewing memberships, and vowing to be more active, more vocal, and more visible. The NAACP needs you, please join today! Membership dues: Adults $30, Youth $15 or $10. Advent Wreath Lighting Ceremony MEANING OF THE CANDLES The Five Candles: First Sunday in Advent HOPE (purple) Malachi 3:1 4 November 27, 2011 Second Sunday in Advent PEACE (purple) Isaiah 9:6 7 December 4, 2011 Third Sunday in Advent JOY (pink) Isaiah 61:1 4,8 11 December 11, 2011 Fourth Sunday in Advent LOVE (Purple) 2 Samuel 7:1 11, 16 December 18, 2011 Christmas Eve in Advent CHRIST CANDLE (White) Isaiah 9:2 7 The light has finally come bringing HOPE, PEACE, JOY AND LOVE to all mankind. Advent The Christian Year opens with the Advent season. Advent means coming or arrival. This season emphasizes expectancy and preparation expectancy of the coming of Christ and preparation for His coming again. Beginning on the Sunday closest to November 27, St. Andrew s Day, Advent continues for a total of four Sundays. The four Sundays emphasize (in order) his coming through accents upon creation, the Bible, the prophets, and the forerunner, John the Baptist. His first coming was as a baby in Bethlehem, His final coming will be as judge of the quick and the dead, and His repeated comings to His people generation after generation, are all part of proclamation of Advent. The color for Advent is purple; it speaks of penitence and is associated with Christ as King. Follow the Star The Christmas star forever changed the lives of the Wise Men who followed it. Jesus love forever changes us, too. When we know that love, we just naturally want to follow our Savior in love and service. Here are four ways to follow the STAR at Christmastime and all year long: S say prayers of praise and thanks for God s gift of forgiveness and eternal life T tell others about Jesus love and salvation A allow Jesus to guide us as we love for him R rely on Jesus for help, hope, and peace We have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him. Matthew 2:2 4

MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! In addition, Advent Calendars are available on the information table. Please take only one per family. Two Seasons of the Christian Year Advent and Christmas Advent The Christian Year opens with the Advent season. The color for Advent is purple; it speaks of penitence and is associated with Christ as King, purple being a royal color. Though it has not always been so, Advent is one of the chief festivals today. More emphasis was placed upon the ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ in the early stages of church history. It was considered pagan to observe birthdays. Martyrdom caused the church to celebrate the date of death rather than the date of birth of the saints. The origin of Advent was probably in Gaul, possibly Spain or Italy. It was being celebrated in these places by the 5th Century, and in the 6th Century was given a permanent place in the church calendar by Gregory the Great. It was in the 9th Century that it took its present form and place. Christmas (and Christmastide) Christmas is the next celebration in the Christian Year and includes from one to two Sundays depending on the day of the week that Christmas Day falls upon. Christmastide (the time between Christmas and Epiphany) is a 12 day festival, beginning on the day after Christmas. The emphasis is the Incarnation and its relation to the Christian hope. The color used is white, suggesting godhead, purity, joy and victory. A separate celebration for the birth of Christ did not appear before the 4th Century; until this time it was combined with the celebration of Epiphany, traditionally the time for the baptism of Jesus. The name Christmas came into use in the 12th Century as a contraction of Christ s mass. There was serious doubt as to the exact date of the birth of Christ. December 25 does not appear in records as the birth date before the middle of the 3rd Century. It seems that, either consciously or unconsciously, this particular date was chosen to help offset pagan festivals and practice.
