Dec 20th, 2010 Covenant upon Covenant Pastor Art Palecek Session 9 Covenants of Promise Eph 2:12 "And you were, at that time, without the Mashiyach; and were aliens from the regulations of Israel; and strangers to the covenant of the promise, and were without hope and without Elohim in the world" (AENT) "of promise" : the promise covenant: diatheke, Strong's 1242 Covenant in Gen 6:18 tyrb b'riyth, a compact -a legally binding relationship between two or more parties Genesis 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant (tyrb b'riyth')( Strong's 1242 in LXX) with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant (covenant: diatheke )which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. God chose a people for Himself to accomplish His purposes on earth: What are other covenants in world religions? I. Modern Day covenants A covenant is a promise in a written contract or a deed of real property. There are different types of covenants, such as a covenant of warranty, which is a promise to guarantee the title to the property is free of any claims against it. Covenants which run with the land, such as permanent easement of access or restrictions on use, are binding on future owners of the property. Covenants can be concurrent (mutual promises to be performed at the same time There are covenants that have conditions & are unconditional What about the New Covenant? Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new (Chodesh)covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Chodesh: like a new moon (Not literally a re-created moon) renewed in light from darkness Your Notes God applied the covenant to Abraham's descendant's Isaac and Jacob. There are 4 Covenants God made with the House of Israel: Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, & New Covenant How do they compare? What are conditions and the signs? A Covenant involves the giving and administration of God s gracious gifts of blessing to His people Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us1 P a g e
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Ezek 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. Luke 22:20 And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new (Kainos- Strong's 2537) covenant (diatheke, Strong's 1242) in my blood. Kainos: newly made-different from that which is former- Renewed 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law (Torah) in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Conditions and Responses & Signs of the Covenants Abrahams Covenant Abraham was promised this as a gift. He did nothing to merit this. What was the sign? Genesis 17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token (twa 'owth,) of the covenant betwixt me and you. token:( twa 'owth, oth) same as sign Circumcision is a cutting away of the flesh Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ro 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Your Notes 1. Was with an individual-abraham 2. Gen 12:1-3,7 15 and 17: 1-4 The promises in this covenant: a. Will make of Abraham a great nation b. God will bless Abraham c. God will make Abraham's name great d. Will make Abraham a blessing to other e. Will bless the ones that bless Abraham f. Will curse those that curse Abraham g.will cause all families of the earth to be blessed through Abraham Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us2 P a g e
Circumcision was not a condition, but a sign. As God had already made the promise and the covenant with Abraham in Gen 15 Rom 4:11 And he received the sign ((shmeion semeion, ) of circumcision, a seal (sfragiv sphragis, ) of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Sign- shmeion semeion, Strongs 4592-corresponds to :( twa 'owth in Torah Seal: sfragiv sphragis, Strongs 4973 This covenant of promise was one of eternal blessingall other covenants between God and Israel were based on this covenant The Validity of this Covenant is confirmed: Ex 2:24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob De ut 4:31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them. Ps 105:8 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. it, or change anything in it. 3:16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and his seed as a covenant. AENT Biblical faith is faith in action- a pattern to a covenantal response to His promise Moses's Covenant Established in Ex 19-24, 31 Ex 24:3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the which the LORD hath said will we do. Ex 19 thru 23 may be the regulations or teachings, but the promises are in Deut: The blessings and the curses. De 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Your Notes 9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; 10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: Luke 1:72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come to the gentiles through Yeshua the Mashhiyach :that we might receive the promise of the spirit through faith 3:15 My brothers, I speak as a man. Even though it be a man s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no man can reject it, or change anything in it. Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us3 P a g e
Deut 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: "If" indicates obedience Therefore this is a conditional covenant-to respond with obedience to the teachings What is the sign of this covenant? Ex 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. The sabbath is a "sanctification of time" To be aligned with God-we need to rest in Him and what He had done for us-to cease from striving The Sabbath is a weekly reminder If the covenant of Abraham was a covenant of promise, then Moses's covenant was a covenant of dwelling in that promise. The Torah was given to protect the people so they could enjoy the blessings of the promise. The covenant with Moses was where a believer enjoyed his relationship with God through his obedience. Davidic Covenant There is no covenant word "berit" in II Samuel 7, but later in: 2 Sa 23:1 Now these be the last words of David. 2 Sa 23:5 Yea, does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant (tyrb b'riyth'), ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? RSV Psalms 89:3 I have made a covenant (tyrb b'riyth,) with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, 4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Psalms 132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. 12 If thy children will keep my covenant (tyrb b'riyth,)and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore Your Notes Disobedience resulted in them not enjoying the promises. Gal 3:19 Why then Torah? It was added because of apostasy, until the coming of the heir, to whom the promise was made AENT Torah was not the promise, it established the conditions under which the terms of the covenant could be kept. Gal 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law (Torah) in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us4 P a g e
.The Covenant promises to David in II Sam 7: 2 Sam 7:8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: 2 Sam 7:10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own A secure place 2 Sam 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. Offspring 2 Sam 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 2 Sam 7:16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. Kings descending from him The Sign of the Covenant? May have been the house-that the dynasty would never be lost-to be fulfilled in the Messiah on his throne The promise was followed by David's expression of desire to build the house, or the Temple All promises are similar to Abraham's promises The New Covenant There are Rabbinic writings that refer to the giving of a new Torah "The Holy One, Blessed be He, will sit in Paradise and give instruction, and all the righteous will sit before Him and all the Host of Heaven will stand on His right and the sun and stars on His left; and the Holy One,Blessed be He, interprets to them the grounds of a new Torah which the Holy One, blessed be He, will give them by the hand of King Messiah. Yalqut on Isaiah 26-in the middle ages Your Notes 2 Sam 7:24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God. Israel are God's people 2 Sam 7:29 Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever. God's Blessing What was David's response? 2 Sam 7:18 Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? 2 Sam 7:20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant David was aware he wasn't deserving, yet accepted it by faith. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: Israel broke the covenant-nothing wrong with God, but their faith Jer 31:33 "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. The mezuzah, Tefillin, and Tzitzit were ever present reminders to keep the commandments Where then does the power come from to live righteously? From God's spirit within Ezek 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Kainos: newly made-different from that which is former- Renewed * ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, * I will put my spirit within you, *cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them We see here: God renewing Relationship with Torah Re-gathering into the promised land The Conditions: What God does: unconditional What people do: Conditional-faith and obedience What is the sign? A circumcised heart Ro 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Your Notes 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. The Sabbath rest Heb 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Our hearts being a temple for the spirit of God 1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
