March 9, 2018 FROM THE EAST Thanks to all that attended the Official Visit of Right Worshipful Gary Rardin Eck, to Metropolitan Lodge No. 11, at our March Stated Meeting. We had a large turnout, another excellent meal, and plenty of fellowship mixed with a little fun as well. R/W Gary R. Eck (left) Wor. Rick C. Kidd (right) Congratulations to our newest 60 Year Masonic Veteran, Brother Thomas Rhys Weakley, Sr., who celebrates this special Birthday on March 29, 2018. And congratulations also to our newest member of Metropolitan Lodge No. 11, Right Worshipful John Henry Hart. Our April guest speaker, after dinner and before Lodge opens, will be Greg Burton, an award winning sportscaster, and radio host, with more than 25 years of experience. Greg delivered a very entertaining program for us last year, and I m sure he will again fascinate us with his insight into the state of sports in today s world. Brother Scott Lee LaRochelle, our Junior Deacon, as well as our Lodge s Masonic Home Ambassador, will present a short program on The Masonic Home of Virginia, as part of our regular meeting. please keep all of our ill and distressed, and those less fortunate, in your daily thoughts and prayers. Pray for our men and women in uniform, wherever so dispersed, that they may be kept safe from harm, and returned to their families and loved ones soon. Until we meet again, may the Supreme Architect of the Universe, continue to bless each of you, and your families. Sincerely and Fraternally, Rick Kidd, Worshipful Master * * * * A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE EAST * * * * Our June Stated Meeting for this year has been designated Bring A Friend Night. I know that s a few months away, but this could be one of the most significant meetings of the year and we need to be planning for it every day. Each of us probably knows at least one person that we think would make a good Mason. Invite that person to come to Lodge, share a meal and fellowship with us, learn something about our Craft, and what we as Masons believe in, and the comradery that we share. Hopefully that experience will generate enough interest on their part to want to petition our Lodge for membership. Right now, we have absolutely nothing on our Trestleboard as far as new petitions. I have recently heard a Worshipful Masters of another Lodge say we are initiating three Entered Apprentices next week!. What are they doing that we are not? Our Officers need new prospective members to keep their ritual skills sharp by working in the Three Degrees. One Day Conferral can definitely add a new member to our Lodge Roster, but we do not get the work needed to remain proficient. Take a look around our Lodge Room at your next opportunity during one of our meetings. Look at the age of our current membership. It s my personal opinion that Masonry has a lot to offer a young man, let s promote ourselves and our great Fraternity. We need younger people to join our Lodges now more than ever before. As our Grand Master has stated, " We need to replace ourselves ". Sincerely and Fraternally, Rick Kidd, Worshipful Master

Washington in 1755 (French and Indian War), later he attended meetings at Fredricksburg Lodge. In 1767, Br. Boone, whose Quaker family had pioneered NC s Yadkin River Valley, began to explore Kentucky. In 1769, he traveled through the Cumberland Gap and spent two years hunting in KY. In 1775, he left to survey Kentucky for the Pennsylvania Company. He erected a fort on the Kentucky River, which he named Boonesboro. In 1779, Br. Boone led another party of immigrants to Boonesboro, among whom was the family of Abraham Lincoln's grandfather. In 1780, he joined General George Rogers Clark's (his youngest brother was Br. William Clark, of Lewis & Clark fame) invasion of Ohio. When the War of 1812 started, he volunteered for duty but was turned down due to his age of 78. Br. Boone was known to have a habit of taking the Bible with him on hunting expeditions, often reading it to others around the campfire. Br. Daniel and his wife Rebecca had all of their ten children baptized. Nathan Boone wrote about his father's funeral: "Father's body was conveyed to Flanders Callaway's home at Charette, and there the funeral took place. There were no military or Masonic honors, the latter of which he was a member, as there were then but very few in that region of the country. A direct descendant of Br. Daniel Boone is the award-winning actor and singer, Pat Boone. -------- This article was more compiled and edited than written, by Wor. Br.
