Thanksgiving Thank You This is to thank the organizers, cooks, food line assembly workers, meal delivery drivers, donors and all those who volunteered their efforts on Thanksgiving Day to make the inaugural St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Feed the Needy Food Ministry a huge success. Altogether, over 666 meals were served at the Cultural Center or delivered directly to those in need. Those coming to the Cultural Center and being delivered meals were extremely grateful to receive a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner. Entire families gathered in the small hall and enjoyed a great Thanksgiving meal together. As a result of the gracious monetary donations received, an ample amount of funds remained, which will be deposited into a separate bank account where additional donations can be made and used to fund the Thanksgiving Day event in 2018. We look forward to expanding the number of the needy being fed to one thousand or more. All donations made into the Food Ministry Account will be used for that purpose only. Information about how to donate will be made available in the near future. Again, we thank each one of you who participated in making Thanksgiving a special treat for those in need. That is the true meaning of Christianity! St. Catherine, South East Neighborhood Association (SENA) Community Members and people in need share Thanksgiving together Thirty-two turkeys were roasted, eighty pounds of ham were baked and over 600 dinners were served, delivered or directly provided to individuals in need of a Thanksgiving meal. About 70 volunteers from St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, AHEPA and our SENA Community were on hand to prepare, serve and/or deliver the dinners to grateful folks on Thanksgiving Day. The community is thankful to the police officers who assisted in identifying places where individuals in need were congregated. 10 Pictured is the First Lady of Southridge Court, Francesca, greeting George Matsoukas, Commissioner Shanon Materio and Jeff Koons, who delivered 100 meals to residents of this West Palm Public Housing Development off of Georgia Avenue and Southern Boulevard.

The Passing of Saint Catherine s only Archon, Theodore Athanasakes Theodore Ted Athanasakes, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2017. Ted is survived in our parish by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Athanasakes. Ted had a distinguished career with project Apollo spacecraft ground support and with the Department of the Navy. We know him best for his tireless devotion to our Saint Catherine church. In 1976, he initiated the annual Saint Catherine Greek Festival and served as the festival s chairman many times. He served numerous terms on the Parish Council of Saint Catherine and held the position of President many times, including during the planning and building of Saint Catherine s Hellenic Cultural Center in 1979. One of the greatest gifts that Ted gave to the church was his love of dance and music. In 1986, he became the advisor to Saint Catherine s Heart of Greece dance group, which at times, had over 50 children. He researched Greek music and produced recordings to which the dancers performed. He traveled with and chaperoned the dancers on countless performances throughout the United States, encouraging the youth to stay connected with the Greek Orthodox Christian faith and to keep the Greek culture alive. Ted was a dedicated, enthusiastic, caring role model for the children of Saint Catherine s and always offered support, encouragement, and fun. In 2001, Ted was appointed to the Atlanta Diocese Hellenic Dance Festival by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta as the Southern Conference Coordinator, and in 2005, he was appointed Ambassador of the Florida Southeast Conference by Metropolitan Alexios. In 2009, Ted was invested as an Archon by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for his outstanding service and commitment to the Church and the community as a whole and as a well-known, well-respected leader of the Orthodox Christian Community. Ted touched the lives of many people, he was a man of great kindness and affection, and his constant drive to help others was admirable. He mentored and positively influenced several generations of our youth by his example. May his memory be eternal! 11

Here are some things you can do to support the festival before it even arrives: Become a volunteer by signing up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040b4aabab2daa8-greek or speaking to your usual contact for your favorite area. Let the world know and share all those social media posts you see. Put posters and flyers up at work or club house. Ask the businesses you know if they ll sponsor or donate food. Enclosed with this Lamplighter is a set of sponsorship forms. Invite all your friends, neighbors, and workmates to attend. Join a team to cook, bake, clean, paint, make crafts, set-up. Things to remember during the festival: Parking is very tight at St Catherine and we need every space we can get for our visitors, otherwise they might not come back next year.
